The Use of Permissible Explosives
From Preface: "The present bulletin is printed as a supplement to Bulletin 17 and is intended primarily for coal miners, especially for those working in fields where inflammable gas or coal dust may cause disastrous mine explosions. The bulletin is issued by the Bureau of Mines in the hope that it may prove helpful in lessening accidents due to the use of explosives, and in particular may aid in preventing mine explosions, many of which have been caused by the use of improper explosives."

Briquetting Tests of Lignite at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1908-9 : With a Chapter on Sulphite-Pitch Binder
From Results of Briquetting Tests: "The results of the briquetting investigations conducted by the Government are expected to prove of considerable value, not only to the Government itself as the owner of extensive lignite deposits and largest single purchaser of fuel, but also to the people living in the the regions where lignite is found. The problem assumes still larger proportions when one realizes that the development of manufacturing industries in those regions depends upon the ability to obtain a cheap and satisfactory fuel. Although the results presented in this bulletin are not conclusive, they warrant the continuation of the investigators as soon as funds can be available for the purpose."
The Smokeless Combustion of Coal in Boiler Furnaces
From Introduction: "The present bulletin not only shows that bituminous coals high in volatile matter can be burned without smoke, but also that large plants carrying loads that fluctuate widely, where boilers over banked fires forced to the capacity of their units, can be operated without producing smoke that is objectionable."

Comparative Fuel Values of Gasoline and Denatured Alcohol in Internal-Combustion Engines
From Introduction: "Under the terms of the act establishing the Bureau of Mines, this bureau was authorized to carry on the work of testing and analyzing fuels which had been conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. Therefore, the first investigations of the liquid mineral fuels logically embraced a careful series of comparative tests of gasoline and denatured alcohol in engines. The report is published by the Bureau of Mines because of the transfer of the fuel-testing investigations to this bureau."

In this report the results of tests are related to the various types of protection employed which are described in detail."
Notes on Mineral Wastes
From Introduction Need of Preventing Mineral Waste: "The purpose of the Bureau of Mines in publishing this report is to call attention to some of the present waste, in the hope that knowledge of the facts may lead to an increased desire to eradicate the wastes, and to greater interest in careful, practical and scientific investigations, through which only can they be overcome."
Government Coal Purchases Under Specifications with Analyses for the Fiscal Year 1909-10,
From Introduction: "This bulletin is the fourth of a series showing the results of the purchase of coal by the Government under specifications. The work of inspecting and analyzing coal delivered on Government contracts was transferred to the Bureau of Mines by an act of Congress effective July 1, 1910. It had been carried on for several years before that date by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey. The purpose of this paper is to explain in general terms the methods that the Government has found most satisfactory for the purchase of a large part of its coal supply, including the consideration of bids, the awarding of contracts, and the analyzing of samples on which the price corrections are based."
North Dakota Lignite as a Fuel for Power-Plant Boilers
From Introduction: "The tests described in the following report were made by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the United States Reclamation Service, which, in connection with its Williston project, had erected a large pumping plant at Williston, N. Dak., and had installed steam boilers with furnaces designed to burn a "brown lignite" that was mined on adjacent government land. The results of the tests made at Williston, set forth in this report, show that this fuel, through generally considered unsatisfactory, may be used with fair economy under boilers that generate their full rated capacity."
The Volatile Matter of Coal
From Introduction Scope of Report: "This bulletin is a report on an investigation of the volatile matter in several typical coals-its composition and amount at different temperatures of volatilization. As the investigation is still in progress and will doubtless include other coals than those already examined, the bulletin may be considered a preliminary report, stating the problems studied, the methods used, and the results thus far obtained."

Sweet Clover
"The widespread discussion as to the merits and demerits of this plant has resulted in many conflicting statements regarding its value. Although frequently regarded as a troublesome weed, sweet clover seldom encroaches upon cultivated land, while its value as a forage crop, as a soil renovator, and as a forerunner of alfalfa, in addition to its widespread utilization as a honey plant, makes it desirable to point out under what conditions its use is to be recommended and where its cultivation should be avoided, as well as to give instruction regarding the best methods of eradicating it when it is desired to utilize the ground in some other way." -- p. 3

These two diseases, the one threatening the successful future of one of our most valuable forest trees and the other apparently one of the worst enemies of the potato, have already reached North America.... The danger from such diseases is continual and is increasing with the extension of rapid transportation facilities.... The lack of national power and of adequate State laws makes necessary the prompt and wide distribution of these accounts of the white-pine blister rust and the potato war disease." -- p. 2

Some Common Game, Aquatic, and Rapacious Birds in Relation to Man
"Careful study of the food habits of the game birds, including the group known as shore birds, shows that these birds are of great value to the farmer. The water birds, as the grebes, gulls, and terns, have greater economic value and do less harm than is ordinarily supposed, while some species, like Franklin's gull and the black tern, are markedly beneficial. It is pointed out in this bulletin that many birds of prey are exceedingly valuable to the farmer, but the opposite is true of the Cooper's hawk, the sharp-shinned hawk, and the goshawk, which should be destroyed as the determined foes of poultry, game birds, and most of the smaller insectivorous species." -- p. 2
Methods of Exterminating the Texas-Fever Tick
"For many years these ticks, which transmit the disease of cattle known as Texas or tick fever, have been a cause of heavy loss and a great handicap to live-stock raising in the southern part of the United States. The progress so far made, however, in the cooperative campaign by this department and State authorities with the object of completely eradicating this pest from the country demonstrates that it is entirely possible to accomplish that result, although a number of years of hard work will be required. It is of great importance for the success of this undertaking that the efforts of the officials should be supplemented by individual work by the farmers. This paper gives simple and practical directions for exterminating the ticks." -- p. 2

Timothy Production on Irrigated Land in the Northwestern States
"The production of timothy hay is an important industry in many of the irrigated valleys of the Northwestern States. Some of the methods which have been developed in growing the timothy hay crop in one or more of these valleys are not practiced or known in other important timothy-producing areas. One of the most important of these practices, which has but a limited use, is that of growing alfalfa in place of clover in mixture with the timothy. This practice is at present used in only a few of the most important timothy-producing centers, though it is well adapted to conditions on most of the irrigated land where timothy is produced. In view of these facts it is desirable to disseminate this information among the timothy growers of the Northwest." -- p. 3
Benefits of Improved Roads
"The paper presents in condensed form the chief advantages resulting from better roads. It has been prepared to meet a popular demand for information on this subject, and its publication should be of service in stimulating road improvement throughout the country." -- p. 2.
