Activation of methane by transition metal-substituted aluminophosphate molecular sieves

Description: Recent experiments in our laboratory have demonstrated that aluminophosphate molecular sieves substituted with cobalt and cobalt/silicon combinations and having the AlPO{sub 4}-34 or AlPO{sub 4}-5 structure activate methane starting at {approximately}350{degree}C. Between 400 and 500{degree}C the rate of methane conversion increases steadily with typical conversion efficiencies at 500{degree}C ranging from 15 to 60%. An active feedback system to control synchrotron oscillations in the SLC Damping Rings

Description: Initially the SLC Damping Rings accomplished Robinson instability damping by operating the RF accelerating cavities slightly detuned. In order to be able to run the cavities tuned and achieve damping for Robinson instability and synchrotron oscillations at injection an active feedback system has been developed. Active interlock for storage ring insertion devices

Description: The insertion devices in the NSLS x-ray ring produce such intense photon beams that passive measures alone are not adequate to protect the vacuum chamber. An active interlock is used to prevent thermal damage from improperly steered electron beams. The interlock system measures the position of the electron beam on both sides of the insertion devices using pick-up electrodes and interrupts the rf if the beam moves outside a safe window. The Active Personnel Dosimeter: Apfel Enterprises superheated drop detector

Description: The Active Personnel Dosimeter (APD) provides a digital readout of events caused by neutrons interacting with superheated liquid droplets. The droplets are suspended in a gel held in a replaceable cartridge. Upon neutron interaction, the superheated droplet vaporizes, forming a bubble. Adaptive contact elements for three-dimensional explicit transient analysis

Description: A finite element method was developed for treating the mechanics of contact between deformable bodies. The method uses a family of adaptive interface elements, which were based on the penalty method, to handle the changing contact configurations that can occur between discretized contacting bodies. Adaptive enhancement of magnetoencephalographic signals via multichannel filtering

Description: A time-varying spatial/temporal filter for enhancing multichannel magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings of evoked responses is described. This filter is based in projections derived from a combination of measured data and a priori models of the expected response. It produces estimates of the evoked fields in single trial measurements. Additional capabilities and benchmarking with the SPERT transients for heavy water application of the PARET code

Description: The capabilities of the PARET code have been expanded to include the ability to compute steady-state and transient results for heavy water reactors. A comparison is provided between PARET and the SPERT II series of transients. Another significant improvement in the code is the addition of a restart capability. Advanced coal-fueled gas turbine systems; Technical progress report, July--September 1989

Description: During this quarter, the initial round of iron-oxide based sorbent tests were completed, with iron-oxide based sorbents showing a small advantage over the calcia-based sorbents that had been evaluated previously. Also, the evaluation of coal-water mixture (CWM), was initiated, and a bench-scale series of experiments conducted. These latter experiments concerned spent sorbent stability in molten slag.
