Directory of Accredited Laboratories: 1984

Description: Abstract: Laboratories accredited by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) are identified along with the specific test methods for which they are accredited. The current status of existing accreditation programs is given for laboratories that test thermal insulation, freshly mixed concrete, carpet, wood burning stoves, paint, and personnel radiation dosimeters, and that provide acoustical testing services. Indexes are provided for searching the Directory for laboratori… more

Experimental Study on Impact/Fretting Wear in Heat Exchanger Tubes

Description: A data bank of field experiences with heat exchanger tube vibration reveals numerous cases of tube failures at, or near, the baffle. The objective of this study is to provide qualitative impact/fretting wear information for heat exchanger tubes through the performance of a series of tests involving the pertinent parameters: impact force level, between the tube and its support; tube to support plate hole clearance; tube support plate thickness; and tube vibration frequency. The characteristics o… more

Extraction and Recovery of Plutonium and Americium from Nitric Acid Waste Solutions by the TRUEX Process : Continuing Development Studies

Description: This report summarizes the work done to date on the application of the TRUEX solvent extraction process for removing and separately recovering plutonium and americium from a nitric acid waste solution containing these elements, uranium, and a complement of inert metal ions. This simulated waste stream is typical of a raffinate from a tributyl phosphate (TBP)-based solvent extraction process for removing uranium and plutonium from dissolved plutonium-containing metallurgical scrap. The TRUEX pro… more

Finline Diode Six-Port: Fundamentals and Design Information

Description: Abstract: The preliminary design and testing of a planar circuit six-port with diode detectors is described. The planar circuit medium was chosen to be finline, and all preliminary work was done in WR-42 waveguide (18-26.5 GHz). The finline substrate was alumina, and initially commercial beam-lead diodes were bonded to the finline metalization. The goal is to design an integrated circuit which could be fabricated on one chip (with diode detectors) and used as part of a six port network analyzer… more

Fluid Excitation Forces Acting on a Tube Array

Description: Fluid forces are important in the assessment of vibration of the Space Shuttle Main Engine liquid oxygen posts. This report summarizes the available data on fluid excitation forces acting on tube arrays in turbulent crossflow, and test results for an array of tubes subject to turbulent flow. The fluctuating drag and lift forces are measured as a function of Reynolds number, incoming flow conditions, and tube location in an array.

Fluid Forces on Two Circular Cylinders in Crossflow

Description: Fluid excitation forces are measured in a water loop for two circular cylinders arranged in tandem and normal to flow. The Strouhal number and fluctuating drag and lift coefficients for both cylinders are presented for various spacings and incoming flow conditions. Results show the effects of Reynolds number, pitch ratio, and upstream turbulence on the fluid excitation forces.

General Theory for Dynamic Instability of the SSME LOX Posts

Description: A general theory of fluid-elastic instability for a tube array in crossflow is presented for application to the space shuttle main engine liquid oxygen (SSME LOX) posts. Various techniques to obtain the motion-dependent fluid-force coefficients are discussed and the general instability characteristics are summarized. The theory is also used to evaluate the results of other mathematical models for crossflow-induced instability.

The Hawaiian Monk Seal and Green Turtle on Necker Island, 1983

Description: Abstract: Between 24 July and 6 August 1983, a two-person National Marine Fisheries Service field camp examined the Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi, and green turtle, Chelonia mydas, populations of Necker Island. Forty-three seals were identified, photographic records for seal identification were made, and 21 animals were bleach marked. Of three pups at Necker, only one weaned during the study period and was tagged. A pregnant femals was found dead and a necropsy was performed. Eight… more

Heat Exchanger Vibration Analysis (HXVA) for Prediction of Tube Bundle Instabilities

Description: Pre and postprocessors have been written for an established hydraulic program (COMMIX-IHX) which enables prediction of the internal crossflow field for each tube of Argonne's Test Heat Exchanger and identification of those tubes most likely to experience fluid-elastic instability, together with the instability vibration mode. While the direct use of the HXVA method is limited to single pass, single-segmentally baffled tube bundle configurations, its algorithms and methods can be applied to any … more

Humic Substances in Natural Waters and Their Complexation With Trace Metals and Radionuclides : A Review

Description: Section I introduces the material contained in the rest of the report. Section II presents the origin and characteristics of humic materials as we understand them today and outlines the methods that have been used to separate and analyze these substances. Section III focuses on the general problem of metal-organic interactions and treats some of the factors that are important in chelating and complexing of metal ions by humic substances. Section IV deals specifically with the complexing o… more

In-Cell Reaction Rate Distributions and Cell-Average Reaction Rates in Fast Critical Assemblies

Description: Measurements are described for determining average values of fission rates in uranium-235, uranium-238 and plutonium-239 and capture rates in uranium-238 for heterogeneous cells used to construct fast critical assemblies. The measurements are based on irradiations of foils of uranium-238, uranium-235 and plutonium-239 with counting of fission and capture products using gamma-ray spectroscopy. Both plate and pin cells are considered. Procedures are described for inferring cell-average reaction r… more
