Comparison of the CRAY X-MP-4, Fujitsu VP-200, and Hitachi S-810/20 : an Argonne Perspective

Description: A set of programs, gathered from major Argonne computer users, was run on the current generation of supercomputers: the CRAY X-MP-4, Fujitsu VP-200, and Hitachi S-810/20. The results show that a single processor of a CRAY X-MP-4 is a consistently strong performer over a wide range of problems. The Fujitsu and Hitachi excel on highly vectorized programs and offer an attractive opportunity to sites with IBM-compatible computers.

The Hawaiian Monk Seal and Green Turtle on Necker Island, 1983

Description: Abstract: Between 24 July and 6 August 1983, a two-person National Marine Fisheries Service field camp examined the Hawaiian monk seal, Monachus schauinslandi, and green turtle, Chelonia mydas, populations of Necker Island. Forty-three seals were identified, photographic records for seal identification were made, and 21 animals were bleach marked. Of three pups at Necker, only one weaned during the study period and was tagged. A pregnant femals was found dead and a necropsy was performed. Eight… more

International Review of Environmental Specimen Banking

Description: Abstract: In September 1983, the "8th U. S. - German Seminar of State and Planning on Environmental Specimen Banking" and the "International Review of Environmental Specimen Banking" were held at the National Bureau of Standards. At these meetings the current status of Environmental Specimen Banking Program in the U. S., Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), and other countries was presented and discussed. This publication contains a brief summary of these meetings and separate contributions descr… more

An Overview of the Characteristics of the 6-GeV Synchrotron Radiation : a Preliminary Guide for Users

Description: In this document we present the characteristics of the electromagnetic radiation from various types of sources on a 6-GeV storage ring. The sources include bending magnets, undulators and wigglers. The characteristics are compared with those of other synchrotron sources when operated at their design specifications. The influence of positron beam size on the brilliance is discussed, along with the power distribution from these sources. The goal of this document is to provide users with enough in… more

Precision Measurement and Calibration: Electricity: Selected Papers on the Realization and Maintenance of the Fundamental Electrical Units and Related Topics

Description: Abstract: Selected publications of the National Bureau of Standards technical staff in the field of electricity were first compiled in 1962 as a volume of the NBS Precision Measurement and Calibration Series (Electricity and Electronics, Handbook 77, Volume I); this compilation was extended in 1968 by the compilation of an additional volume in the Precision Measurement and Calibration Series (Electricity-Low Frequency, NBS Special Publication 300, Volume 3). The present volume, a further extens… more

Quasi-Automatic Parallelization : a Simplified Approach to Multiprocessing

Description: As multiprocessors become commercially available, a great deal of concern is being focused on the problems involved in writing and debugging software for such machines. Earlier work described the use of monitors implemented by macro processors to attain portable code. This work formulates a general-purpose monitor which simplifies the programming of a wide class of numeric algorithms. We believe that the approach of describing a set of schedulable units of computation advocated by Brown offers … more

Three-Dimensional Thermal Modeling of Electric Vehicle Batteries

Description: A generic three-dimensional thermal model was developed for analyzing the thermal behavior of electric-vehicle batteries. The model calculates temperature distribution and excursion of a battery during discharge, change, and open circuit. The model takes into account the effects of heat generation, internal conduction and convection, and external heat dissipation on the temperature distribution in a battery. The three-dimensional feature of the model permits incorporation of various asymmetric … more
