An Analysis of the Effects of Wing Aspect Ratio and Tail Location on Static Longitudinal Stability Below the Mach Number of Lift Divergence

Description: "An analysis is presented of the influence of wing aspect ratio and tail location on the effects of compressibility upon static longitudinal stability. The investigation showed that the use of reduced wing aspect ratios or short tail lengths leads to serious reductions in high-speed stability and the possibility of high-speed instability" (p. 1).

Analysis of variation of piston temperature with piston dimensions and undercrown cooling

Description: From Summary: "A theoretical analysis is presented that permits estimation of the changes in piston-temperature distribution induced by variations in the crown thickness, the ring-groove-pad thickness, and the undercrown surface heat-transfer coefficient. The analysis consists of the calculation of operating temperatures at various points in the piston body on the basis of the experimentally determined surface heat-transfer coefficients and boundary-region temperatures, as well as arbitrarily s… more

Cyclic Engine Test of Cast Vitallium Turbine Buckets 2

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation conducted to provide data that may be used to correlate the engine service performance of cast Vitallium turbine buckets with metallurgical properties. Data were obtained from four turbine wheels of Timken alloy with cast Vitallium buckets. Examination of 12 broken buckets indicated that 8 of the failures were probably caused by fatigue and 4 by impact with pieces of other broken buckets.

The Determination of Uranium in K-65 (Gangue Lead Cake)

Description: The major problems in this determination are the extraction of X from the sample and the isolation of the extracted X. The application of various analytical methods to these two problems indicates that the current method of analysis yields values which may be as much as 15% high. The current method of analysis is subject to positive and negative errors. The magnitude of these errors varies with techniques and with sample composition. The recommend method, although longer, is believed to be free… more

Development of cast aluminum alloys for elevated-temperature service

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation to develop an aluminum alloy for service at elevated temperatures. The investigation was divided into three parts: (1) The effects of heat treatment and exposure to elevated temperatures on the tensile properties of alloys cooled to room temperature, (2) the effect of alloy additions on the room temperature and elevated-temperature properties of aluminum, 6-percent-magnesium alloys, and (3) the improvement in high-temperature creep properties of s… more

Dislocation Theory of the Fatigue of Metals

Description: Note presenting a dislocation theory of fatigue failure for annealed solid solutions. An equation giving the dependence of the number of cycles for failure on the stress, the temperature, the material parameters, and the frequency is derived for uniformly stressed specimens. The equation is found to be in quantitative agreement with the data.

The Distribution of Radioactivity in the Mouse Following Administration of Dibenzanthracene Labeled in the 9 and 10 Positions with Carbon Fourteen

Description: Dibenzanthracene, labeled in the 9 and 10 positions with carbon fourteen has been administered to mice intravenously and by stomach tube as an aqueous colloid, and intraperitoneally, subcutaneously, and by stomach tube in tricaprylin solution. The distribution of radioactivity in the mice at various time intervals after administration of the carcinogen has been determined. The radioactivity is rapidly eliminated, largely through the feces, and ordinarily very little is absorbed. The distributio… more

Ditching Tests of a 1/8-Scale Model of the Chance Vought XF6U-1 Airplane, TED No. NACA DE319

Description: Tests were made with a 1/8-scale dynamically similar model of the Chance Vought XF6U-1 airplane to study its behavior when ditched. The model was ditched in calm water at the Langley tank no. 2 monorail. Various landing attitudes, speeds, and conditions of damage were simulated. The behavior of the model was determined from visual observations, by recording time histories of the accelerations, and by taking motion pictures of the ditchings. From the results of the tests it was concluded that th… more

Effect of Inlet Air Distortion on the Steady-State and Surge Characteristics of an Axial-Flow Turbojet Compressor

Description: "An investigation was conducted in an altitude test chamber to determine the effects of inlet airflow distortion on the compressor steady-state and surge characteristics of a high-pressure ratio, axial-flow turbojet engine. Circumferential-type inlet flow distortions were investigated, which covered a range of distortion sector angles from 20 deg to 168 deg and distortion levels up to 22 percent. The presence of inlet airflow distortions at the compressor face resulted in a substantial increase… more
