100-F area unit purge, May 3, 1945

Description: This report discusses the pressure drop on the 100-F unit, as measured on the eight pressure drop tubes, which had increased to 24 lbs./in.{sup 2} above base by May 2. The unit was shut down on May 3 to purge with 50 ppm solids for 1.1 hr. and to take care of necessary maintenance work.

Abrasive Blasting for Cleaning Parts

Description: Abstract: A demonstration on August 22, 1945, showed that Alpha or Beta M or K parts, including insulators, can be well cleaned with a pressure-feed abrasive blaster. The abrasive is a slurry of alumina and water mixed with high velocity air in a special feed nozzle. The slurry is continuously recycled.

Addition of Heat to a Compressible Fluid in Motion

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of this report is to summarize, without extended proofs, the results of a study of a simplified model of nonadiabiatic, compressible fluid flow, both subsonic and supersonic, and to state these results in a form that will make them immediately useful in providing a theoretical background for current technical problems of high-speed combustion.

An Additional Investigation of the High-Speed Lateral-Control Characteristics of Spoilers

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the characteristics of partial-span spoilers located at 0.75 of the chord on an NACA 66-series tapered wing, especially at high speeds. The effect of small spoiler projections was found to increase with an increase in speed until the critical Mach number was exceeded.

Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 1/8-Scale Powered Model of a High-Speed Bomber With a Dual Pusher Propeller Aft of the Empennage

Description: Report presenting wind-tunnel tests made to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a scale model of a high-speed bomber with a dual pusher propeller aft of the empennage. Some of the results discussed include longitudinal, lateral, and directional stability and control, the empennage design, and ground effects on the aerodynamic characteristics. The results indicate that this particular airplane has several advantages with regard to stability and control over the conventional-type single-… more

Aerodynamic Characteristics of Four Republic Airfoil Sections from Tests in Langley Two-Dimensional Low-Turbulence Tunnels

Description: "Four airfoils sections, designed by the Republic Aviation Corporation for the root and tip sections of the XF-12 airplane, were tested in the Langley two-dimensional low-turbulence tunnels to obtain their aerodynamic characteristics. Lift characteristics were obtained at Reynolds numbers of 3,000,000, 6,000,000, 9,000,000, and 14,000,000, whereas drag characteristics were obtained at Reynolds numbers of 3,000,000, 6,000,000, and 9,000,000. Pressure distributions were obtained for one of the ro… more
