The Design of Jet Pumps

Description: This report shows that by applying both energy and impulse theorems the optimum throat dimension of the mixing nozzle and the best shape of intake can be predicted approximately in a relatively simple manner. The necessary length of the mixing nozzle follows from Prandtl's turbulent mixing theory. The calculations are carried out for the mixing of similar and dissimilar fluids.

Determination of optimum plan forms for control surfaces

Description: Solutions found for a range of airfoil plan forms indicate that, regardless of the characteristics of the tail surface, the chord of the rudder or of the elevator should be very nearly constant over its span. The optimum ailerons are also of a characteristic shape, varying little with the plan form of the wing.

Dynamic stress calculations for two airplanes in various gusts

Description: Report presenting a series of calculations made to determine the probable dynamic wing stress of two large airplanes in atmospheric gusts. The results indicate that in both isolated and repeated gusts of probable occurrence, the dynamic overstress is about 10 percent when referred to the present static design standard.

The effect of external shape upon the drag of a scoop

The Effect of Methods of Testing on the Ultimate Loads Supported by Stiffened Flat Sheet Panels Under Edge Compression

Description: Note presenting testing of two series of stiffened flat sheet specimens tested under edge compression using various end conditions: round ends, flat ends, and continuous panels. The specimens consisted of aluminum-alloy flat sheet stiffened by three hat-shaped extruded aluminum-alloy stiffeners. The results indicated that the length of the specimen has an insignificant effect on the ultimate compressive load.

Effect of Propeller Operation on the Pitching Moments of Single-Engine Monoplanes

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the effects of propeller operation on pitching moments with particular reference to the effect of propeller forces, the field of flow in the slipstream, and the increments of lift on the wing and the tail. A procedure, directly applicable only to single-engine monoplanes without flaps, has been set up for predicting the effect of propeller operation on pitching moments as well.
