Development of a MK-II Loop to Simulate Reactor Hydraulic Conditions

Description: The Mk-IIC Integral Loop was modified to provide an in-pile experimental apparatus that would simulate the subassembly coolant flow rate and inlet pressure head of the Fast Test Reactor (FTR). There were two main design changes. First, the safety dump tanks were removed from the Mk-IIC loop and replaced by a second annular linear induction pump (ALIP). Second, a flow restricting orifice was sized so that the hydraulic requirements of prototypical test-section coolant velocity and pressure head … more

Disposal of Radioactive Sodium Waste

Description: Operation of liquid-metal-cooled fast breeder reactors (LMFBRs) will result in production of various quantities of radioactive sodium waste. Two methods have been developed and tested on a small scale for converting this sodium waste to inert compounds suitable for disposal. The first method is direct oxidation of the sodium after dispersal in a silica matrix. The sodium is mixed with silica and oxidized in a rotary drum reactor. The product is suitable for making glass when other stabilizing c… more

Domain and Surface Structures of Sodium Tungsten Bronzes, NaxWO₃ (0.4 [x [1)

Description: The domain and surface structures of metallic sodium tungsten bronzes, NaxWO₃, 0.4 < x < 1, were studied using optical microscopy, supplemented by chemical methods, photoelectron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, etc. The birefringent, multidomain structure of the bronze is exhibited by a sodium-deficient, epitaxial surface film and hence is not, as reported elsewhere, a bulk property. The film can be synthesized by anodic electrolysis in alkaline solution and can exist only epitaxially with t… more

The Dynamic Response of Cracked Hexagonal Subassembly Ducts

Description: This report examines the dynamic elastic response of flawed and unflawed reactor subassembly ducts. A plane- strain finite-element analysis is presented for hexagonal ducts containing either internal corner cracks or external midflat cracks. Two geometric loading conditions are considered: uniform internal pressurization and point loads applied at opposite midflats. The time dependence of these loads was chosen as a Heaviside step function for the worst-case situation and as a triangular pulse … more

EBR-2 Fisson-Product-Source Test No. 1

Description: A fission-product source (FPS) was irradiated in EBR-II to provide data for calibrating the facility's fuel-element rupture detector (FERD), which is a delayed-neutron monitor, and germanium-lithium argon-scanning system (GLASS), a fission-gas-activity monitor. A metal alloy source, Ni-3.2 wt.% uranium, provided quantitative recoil release of the fission-product nuclides. The source alloy, in tubular form, was irradiated as core-region segments of 18 capsules in the FPS subassembly. The irradia… more

EBR-II Environmental Instrumented Subassembly XX08 : Engineering and Assembly

Description: Subassembly XX08 is a fueled and instrumented subassembly designed primarily for an ongoing program to investigate the thermal-hydraulic core environment within EBR-II under normal and off-normal plant operating conditions. XX08 contains 58-xenon-tagged, EBR-II Mark-II driver-fuel elements. The Mark-II fuel is expected to provide XX08 with an irradiation lifetime three times as great as that attained with its predecessor, XX07, i.e., a 9 versus 2.9% burnup. A burnup of 9 at.% is equivalent to a… more

Effects of Possible Compression Loading of EBR-II Subassemblies Due to Irradiation-Induced Swelling and Changes in Reactor Environment

Description: A condition of compression loading could possibly occur to a subassembly as a result of large length changes to irradiation-induced swelling and thermal expansion. The effects of axial compression loading on EBR-II experimental and driver-fuel subassemblies were evaluated. Compression tests that were performed on the slotted top fixture of a subassembly showed that a force of 2100 lb at 900 degrees F would close the slot enough so that the core-gripper blade would not fit into the slot. Such a … more

Efficient Numerical Scheme Based on the Method of Characteristics Applicable to Two-Dimensional Fluid Transients

Description: Two-step explicit numerical procedures based on the method of characteristics are presented. These procedures use four bicharacteristics equally spaced on the Mach cone. The velocity components are first obtained for the entire field by use of known initial data. Pressure is calculated in the second step in which the advanced velocity data are used. Nowhere in these procedures is an iterative scheme required. A linearized set of hyperbolic differential equations describing two-dimensional trans… more

Energy Level Structure and Transition Probabilities in the Spectra of the Trivalent Lanthanides in LaF₃

Description: Two types of correlations with experimental results are reported. For even-f-electron systems, a center of gravity was computed based on the energies of the observed states, and calculated optimized sets of atomic energy level parameters. For odd-electron systems complete crystal field calculations were performed in which parameters of both the atomic and crystal-field parts of the interaction were adjusted to experimental data. The result is a set of eigenvectors for all the ionic states in ea… more
