Application of International Safeguards to Fast Critical Assembly Facilities. FY 1980 Summary Report

Description: Nuclear materials inventory-verification techniques for large split-table fast critical assemblies are being studied in this program. Emphasis has been given to techniques that minimize fuel handling in order to reduce facility downtime and radiation exposure to the inventory team. The techniques studied include drawer seals, autoradiography, and spectral index measurements. Two-drawer sealing techniques have been studied, and the relative strengths and weaknesses are pointed out. The rod-type … more

The Application of Neutron-Activation Analysis to the Determination of Leach Rates of Simulated Nuclear-Waste Forms

Description: The application of neutron activation analysis to the determination of element release from simulated nuclear waste forms during leaching is described for several different glasses. Potential neutron irradiation effects are discussed, and it is shown, by a series of leach tests on activated and non-activated glass samples, that neutron irradiation has no discernible effect on the release of silicon and cesium during leaching. The radioisotopes best suited for analysis with this method and their… more

Application of NMR Spectroscopy and Multidimensional Imaging to the Gelcasting Process and in-situ Real-Time Monitoring of Cross-Linking Polyacrylamide Gels

Description: In the gelcasting process, a slurry of ceramic powder in a solution of organic monomers is cast in a mold. The process is different from injection molding in that it separates mold-filling from setting during conversion of the ceramic slurry to a formed green part. In this work, NMR spectroscopy and imaging have been conducted for in-situ monitoring of the gelation process and for mapping the polymerization. ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra have been obtained during polymerization of a pre… more

Application of the NNWSI [Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations] Unsaturated Test Method to Actinide Doped SRL [Savannah River Laboratory] 165 Type Glass

Description: The results of tests done using the Unsaturated Test Method are presented. These tests, done to determine the suitability of glass in a potential high-level waste repository as developed by the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations Project, simulate conditions anticipated for the post-containment phase of the repository when only limited contact between the waste form and water is expected. The reaction of glass occurs via processes that are initiated due to glass/water vapor and glass/li… more

Application of the Pulsed-Neutron Activation Technique for Flow Measurements at EBR-II

Description: This report describes the pulsed-neutron-activation (PNA) flow-measuring technique as applied to in situ fluid-flow measurement at EBR-II. Analytic relationships are derived for modeling the process and estimating the uncertainty in measurement. Results from measurements of both water flow and secondary-sodium flow are presented. Results from PNA measurements of water side of the EBR-II steam system have led better definition of plant parameters. Results from sodium-flow measurements are used t… more

An Approach to Implementing State Space Searches on Heterogeneous Systems of Multiprocessors

Description: We report on experiments run on a set of shared-memory multiprocessors. Our goal was to demonstrate that one could conveniently utilize a set of shared-memory multiprocessors cooperatively working on typical state-space searches. We utilized a technology for writing portable code for multiprocessors, coded three depth-first state-space searches, and ran them on a set of multiprocessors. The final problem used substantial resources (over 65 hours on a single processor) and was successfully distr… more

An Approach to Programming Multiprocessing Algorithms on the Denelcor HEP

Description: In the process of learning how to write code for the Denelcor HEP, we have developed an approach that others may well find useful. We believe that the basic synchronization primitives of the HEP (i.e., asynchronous variables), along with the prototypical patterns for their use given in the HEP FORTRAN 77 User's Guide, form too low-level a conceptual basis for the formulation of multiprocessing algorithms. We advocate the use of monitors, which can be easily implemented using the HEP primitives.… more

Approximations of Gamma Cross Sections for Fast Nuclear Reactors

Description: The report shows a method to approximate a P₁ scattering solution for the flux in a fast reactor, using an isotropic, but not a diagonal-transport-approximation scattering matrix. Presented are flux errors relative to a P₁ solution for different levels of transport approximation in an EBR-II type of core surrounded by a stainless steel reflector. Problems associated with the use of the method are also presented.

Aqueous Biphasic Extraction of Uranium and Thorium from Contaminated Soils : Final Report

Description: The aqueous biphasic extraction (ABE) process for soil decontamination involves the selective partitioning of solutes and fine particulates between two immiscible aqueous phases. The biphase system is generated by the appropriate combination of a water-soluble polymer (e.g., polyethylene glycol) with an inorganic salt (e.g., sodium carbonate). Selective partitioning results in 99 to 99.5% of the soil being recovered in the cleaned-soil fraction, while only 0.5 to 1% is recovered in the contamin… more

ARDISC (Argonne Dispersion Code): Computer Programs to Calculate the Distribution of Trace Element Migration in Partially Equilibrating Media

Description: A computer program (ARDISC, the Argonne Dispersion Code) is described which simulates the migration of nuclides in porous media and includes first order kinetic effects on the retention constants. The code allows for different absorption and desorption rates and solves the coupled migration equations by arithmetic reiterations. Input data needed are the absorption and desorption rates, equilibrium surface absorption coefficients, flow rates and volumes, and media porosities.
