17-keV x-ray output of plutonium

Description: In the production of plutonium in a reactor, plutonium-238, 240, and 241 are formed as well as Pu{sup 239}. It is well known that the specific alpha activity of the plutonium varies as the percentages of these isotopes are changed. Kinderman, et al have worked out the relationship between isotopic content and MWD/ton exposure. Their findings are reported in this document.

100 Area process improvement program for the period November 1954--April 1955

Description: This is the second of a series of documents issued quarterly. The documents present, for critical examination by management and for the information of related groups, that portion of the future 100 Area technical program which relates directly and more or less immediately to the Technical-Manufacturing efforts to increase both power levels and production. An attempt is made to describe and justify the key production tests planned for the following six month period. Only those tests necessary fo… more

1A Reactor Inlet Hydraulic Valve Position Detector Temperature. Section I. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results DL-S-258-S, RNI-3

Description: The purpose of the test was to determine the internal temperature of the valve position detector for the 1A reactor inlet hydraulic valve with the plant at normal pressure and temperature and at power. The normal operating temperatures for the valve position detector on the 1A reactor inlet hydraulic valve range from a minimum of 287 F to a maximum of 294.7 F.

Ability of Pilots to Control Simulated Short-Period Yawing Oscillations

Description: Report discussing an investigation into the ability of human pilots to control short-period yawing oscillations using a yaw simulating device. The ability to control the oscillations was determined to be a function of period, control effectiveness, and inherent damping. Pilot control effectiveness was found to improve with practice.

Abnormal grain growth in M-252 and S-816 alloys

Description: Report discussing an experimental investigation was carried out on air- and vacuum-melted M-252 and S-816 alloys to find conditions of heating and hot-working which resulted in abnormal grain growth. The experiments were mainly limited to normal conditions of heating for hot-working and heat treatment and normal temperatures of solution treatment were used to allow grain growth after susceptibility to abnormal grain growth was developed by various experimental conditions. Results indicated that… more

The absorption, distribution, and excretion of tritium in men and animals

Description: A series of experiments on exposure of man and rats to tritium gas (HT) or tritiated water (HTO) are reported. In one human experiment 3 millicuries of HTO was administered in 200 milliliters of water by ingestion. Absorption into the blood stream was linear with time and complete in about 45 minutes. Body water turnover was measured over a period of six days by weighing all food and fluid intake and all excretory output. For four days water turnover was kept near normal (2.7 liters per day). Abundance and Distribution of Uranium and Thorium in Zircon, Sphene, Apatite, Epidote, and Monazite in Granitic Rocks

Description: The following report covers investigations of uranium and thorium discovered within host minerals in the earth's crust, zircon, sphene, apatite, epidote, and monazite. The object of this investigation has been to obtain an approximate measure of the abundance and distribution of uranium and thorium among these five mineral phases.

Acoustic analysis of ram-jet buzz

Description: From Introduction: "The surging of a system containing a centrifugal- or axial-flow compressor (e.g., refs. 1 to 4) is an example of self-sustained oscillation. Inlets designed for supersonic jet engines also have been observed to induce oscillations (e.g., refs. 5 to 11) which are usually referred to as "buzz." The origin of buzz in ram-jet engines is the subject of the present report."

Description: Activities at the Michigan Reactor and pneumatic tube system are outlined. Various modifications including installation and operation of a "bunny" rabbit pneumatic tube system for transferring samples from laboratory to counter are described. Prelimirary investigation for design of a neutron generator for activation work is described. Modifications to the 100-channel pulse-height analyzer including addition of auxillary circuits and additioral detectors are sumnnarized. In nuclear chemistry a c… more

ADVANCED DESIGNS OF MAGNETIC JACK-TYPE CONTROL ROD DRIVE

Description: The magnetic jack is a device for positioning the control rods In a nuclear reactor, especially in a reactor containing water under pressure. Magnetic actuation precludes the need for shaft seals and eliminates the problems associated with mechanisms operating in water. It consists of a pressure shell, four sets of external stationary magnet coils (hold, grip, lift, pull down), and one Internal moving part (ammature) that impants linear motion to a cluster of rods.
