3-D Target Location from Stereoscopic SAR Images

Description: SAR range-Doppler images are inherently 2-dimensional. Targets with a height offset lay over onto offset range and azimuth locations. Just which image locations are laid upon depends on the imaging geometry, including depression angle, squint angle, and target bearing. This is the well known layover phenomenon. Images formed with different aperture geometries will exhibit different layover characteristics. These differences can be exploited to ascertain target height information, in a stereosco… more

Actinide Packaging and Storage Facility (APSF)

Description: The Actinide Packaging and Storage Facility (APSF) was designed to provide long-term storage of radionuclides. Task A.229 defined the requirement for a small, low-power radiation detection capability. This detection system was to be deployed as a component of an autonomously guided vehicle (AGV) located within the storage vault of the facility and necessarily had to exhibit the qualities of low maintenance, long lifetime, and stable performance typically required of unattended monitoring system… more

Adsorption/Membrane Filtration as a Contaminant Concentration and Separation Process for Mixed Wastes and Tank Wastes - Final Report

Description: This project was conducted to evaluate novel approaches for removing radioactive strontium (Sr) and cesium (Cs) from the tank wastes. The bulk of the Sr removal research conducted as part of this project investigated adsorption of Sr onto a novel adsorbent known as iron-oxide-coated sand. The second major focus of the work was on the removal of cesium. Since the chemistries of strontium and cesium have little commonality, different materials (namely, cesium scavengers known as hexacyanoferrates… more

Advanced Drilling through Diagnostics-White-Drilling

Description: A high-speed data link that would provide dramatically faster communication from downhole instruments to the surface and back again has the potential to revolutionize deep drilling for geothermal resources through Diagnostics-While-Drilling (DWD). Many aspects of the drilling process would significantly improve if downhole and surface data were acquired and processed in real-time at the surface, and used to guide the drilling operation. Such a closed-loop, driller-in-the-loop DWD system, would … more

Advances in atmospheric chemistry modeling: the LLNL impact tropospheric/stratospheric chemistry model

Description: We present a unique modeling capability to understand the global distribution of trace gases and aerosols throughout both the troposphere and stratosphere. It includes the ability to simulate tropospheric chemistry that occurs both in the gas phase as well as on the surfaces of solid particles. We have used this capability to analyze observations from particular flight campaigns as well as averaged observed data. Results show the model to accurately simulate the complex chemistry occurring near… more

''After the Genome 5 Conference'' to be held October 6-10, 1999 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Description: OAK B139 The postgenomic era is arriving faster than anyone had imagined--sometime during 2000 we'll have a large fraction of the human genome sequence. Heretofore, our understanding of function has come from non-industrial experiments whose conclusions were largely framed in human language. The advent of large amounts of sequence data, and of ''functional genomic'' data types such as mRNA expression data, have changed this picture. These data share the feature that individual observations and … more

Aggregation of dialkyl-substituted diphosphonic acids and its effect on metal ion extraction.

Description: Solvent extraction reagents containing the diphosphonic acid group exhibit an extraordinary affinity for tri-, tetra- and hexavalent actinides. Their use has been considered for actinide separation and pre-concentration procedures. Solvent extraction data obtained with P,P{prime}-di(2-ethylhexyl) methane-, ethane- and butanediphosphonic acids exhibit features that are difficult to explain without Knowledge of the aggregation state of the extractants. Information about the aggregation of the dia… more

Air Dispersion Modeling of Mine Waste in the Southeast Missouri Old Lead Belt

Description: Past lead ore processing conducted in the Southeast Missouri Old Lead Belt since the 1700s has left numerous large areas of lead contamination in elevated piles of fine gravel waste called “chat” and dried-out tailings ponds. Wind suspension and atmospheric dispersion are known to transport these materials to the surrounding communities where the lead could pose a human health threat through inhalation or ingestion of the deposited contamination. The purpose of this study was to estimate potent… more

All hadronic B decay trigger with the CDF silicon vertex tracker

Description: Silicon Vertex tracks are of fundamental importance for reconstructing B meson decays at a hadron collider. The upgraded CDF detector will deploy an online Silicon Vertex Tracker in the level 2 trigger.
