On the Multiplication Constant of Homogeneous Mixtures of U with Various Moderators

Description: The following represents a summary of calculations on the multiplication constant of homogeneous mixtures of uranium and different moderators. These calculations were made possible by Fermi's determination of the age of neutrons and by the extrapolation to higher scattering cross-sections of the resonance absorption of uranium as measured by C. Creutz. According to Fermi, the former quantity is 120 sq. cm. The latter is given in the two attached graphs. The first (Fig.1) of these goes as high a… more

Production of (Uranium) Tetrafluoride

Description: Production of tetrafluoride for the month of April was 49,400. New equipment installed late in March operated smoothly and the production was slightly over the rated capacity of the plant. Nickel ends were welded on to the steel reactor tubes to prevent corrosion at the cover joint and possible contamination of the product with iron. The nickel ends will also save considerable repair work on the tube ends. The magnesium trays for some of the reactors are beginning to crack at the sides from fre… more

Shear Tests on DuPont Explosive Rivets With the Countersunk Head Milled Flush After Expansion

Description: Report discusses the results of shear testing in which the heads of Du Pont explosive countersunk rivets were allowed to protrude above the skin surface before expansion and the protruding portions were removed after expansion. As the height of the rivet head above the skin increases, the tightness of the rivet was found to increase. The report concludes that it may be desirable to investigating filling an entire shank with an explosive charge in order to permit greater tolerances in the drille… more

Some Effects of Reynolds and Mach Numbers on the Lift of an NACA 0012 Rectangular Wing in the NACA 19-Foot Pressure Tunnel

Description: Bulletin presenting a short investigation in the 19-foot pressure tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a rectangular wing model constructed to NACA 0012 airfoil sections. Tests were run with the air in the tunnel at 2 different pressures: atmospheric and 35 pounds per square inch absolute.

Tests of Exhaust Propulsion Nozzles

Description: "The thrust produced by a variety of exhaust stacks and nozzles, and the effect of these stacks and nozzles on the power of a single-cylinder R-2800 engine were investigated over a wide range of engine speeds and manifold pressures in a series of tests in the Pratt & Whitney experimental test department. From the data obtained it is possible to estimate the optimum form of nozzles and the available thrust for airplanes fitted with R-2800 engines under sea-level conditions" (p. 1).

The Use of a Retractable Planing Flap Instead of a Fixed Step on a Seaplane

Description: Report presents and discusses the improvements in hydrodynamic and aerodynamic performance of a seaplane with a retractable planing flap instead of a conventional main step. A type of flap that could be used is described and tested for hydrodynamic stability. Results regarding the trim limits of stability, limiting positions of the center of gravity, and skipping are provided.
