An analysis of acceleration, airspeed, and gust-velocity data from one type of four-engine transport airplane operated over two domestic routes

Description: From Introduction: "As part of a continuing study of the gust and load histories for transport airplanes (see, for example, refs. 1 and 2), samples of VGH records have been obtained from two four-engine commercial transport airplanes. The data samples represent 839 and 1,080 flight hours of operation on two transcontinental routes and cover operations up to an altitude of 25,000 feet."

Analysis of accelerations, gust velocities, and airspeeds from operations of a twin-engine transport airplane on a transcontinental route from 1950 to 1952

Description: Report presenting time-history data obtained from one type of twin-engine transport airplane during two years of operations on a transcontinental route, which is analyzed in order to determine the magnitude and frequency of occurrence of gust accelerations, gust velocities, and associated airspeeds and altitudes. Analysis of behavior of simply supported flat plates compressed beyond the buckling load into the plastic range

Description: From Summary and Introduction: "An analysis is presented of the postbuckling behavior of a simply supported square flat plate with straight edges compressed beyond the buckling load into the plastic range. The method of analysis involves the application of a variational principle of the deformation theory of plasticity in conjunction with computations carried out on a high-speed calculating machine. The results of the analysis are presented in the form of curves showing the variation of deforma… more

Analysis of Borax Experiments

Description: An analysis of the self-limitation of power excursions by steam production in heterogeneous water-moderated reactors using MTR- type fuel elements seems to give excellent agreement with Borax data on both fuel plate temperature rise and total energy for excursions in which the reactor is initially at saturation temperature. A simple model for steam production is developed from thermodynamic and heat diffusion considerations. In those cases for which the reactor is substantially sub-cooled, it a… more

Analysis of Ear Formation in Deep-Drawn Cups

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of this paper is to show that the number and location of ears can be computed on the basis of single-crystal behavior and a knowledge of the orientation of the polycrystalline aggregate. Although the proposed method is a general one, only face-centered cubic metals are considered in this paper."

Analysis of factors affecting selection and design of air-cooled single-stage turbines for turbojet engines 4: coolant-flow requirements and performance of engines using air-cooled corrugated-insert blades

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the estimated minimum cooling requirements and related performance of turbojet engines equipped with high-performance single-stage turbines with air-cooled corrugated-insert blades over a range of turbine-inlet temperature, tip speed, and hub-tip radius ratio for Mach number 2 at 50,000 feet. The effects of stress-ratio factor, flight Mach number, altitude, turbine rotor impeller efficiency, and outside heat-transfer coefficient on cooling requirements were… more

Analysis of Fully Developed Turbulent Heat Transfer and Flow in an Annulus With Various Eccentricities

Description: From Introduction: "Most of the existing analyses for turbulent flow and heat transfer in passages have been confined to circular tubes or parallel plates (refs. 1 to 5). In reference 6, temperature distributions for rectangular and triangular ducts were calculated by using experimental velocity distributions and average heat-transfer coefficients. Some work on the calculation of the velocity and shear-stress distributions in corners is reported in reference 7."

Analysis of Laminar Forced-Convection Heat Transfer in Entrance Region of Flat Rectangular Ducts

Description: From Introduction: "Beyond the position where the boundary layer treatment can no longer be used, curves have been faired to connect the Nusselt number results of the present analysis with those of reference 3, in which a parabolic velocity profile is assumed throughout the entire duct length. So that a comparison could be made with the results of reference 3, the boundary layer analysis was used to study the development of the temperature profile associated with a parabolic velocity profile th… more

Analysis of Limitations Imposed on One-Spool Turbojet-Engine Designs by Turbines Having Downstream Stators at 0, 2.0, and 2.8 Flight Mach Numbers

Description: Memorandum presenting an aerodynamic design-point analysis of one-spool turbojet engines with one-stage turbines with one and with two rows of downstream stator blades. The object of the analysis was to evaluate the design characteristics of the turbines in comparison with conventional one- and two-stage turbines, to determine the extent to which exit whirl can be increased before causing weight-flow capacity to decrease, and to determine the effect of downstream stators on engine design limita… more

An analysis of once-per-revolution oscillating aerodynamic thrust loads on single-rotation propellers on tractor airplanes at zero yaw

Description: A simplified procedure is shown for calculating the once-per-revolution oscillating aerodynamic thrust loads on propellers of tractor airplanes at zero yaw. The only flow field information required for the application of the procedure is a knowledge of the upflow angles at the horizontal center line of the propeller disk. Methods are presented whereby these angles may be computed without recourse to experimental survey of the flow field. The loads computed by the simplified procedure are compar… more

An Analysis of the Stability and Ultimate Compressive Strength of Short Sheet-Stringer Panels with Special Reference to the Influence of Riveted Connection Between Sheet and Stringer

Description: A method of strength analysis of short sheet-stringer panels subjected to compression is presented which takes into account the effect that the riveted attachments between the plate and the stiffeners have on the strength of the panels. An analysis of experimental data shows that panel strength is highly influenced by rivet pitch, diameter, and location and that the degree of influence for a given riveting depends on the panel configuration and panel material.
