Jet effects on pressure loading of all-movable horizontal stabilizer

Description: Report presenting an investigation in the 8- by 6-foot supersonic tunnel to determine the effects of a cold exhaust jet on the pressure loadings of an all-movable, 45 degree sweptback horizontal stabilizer located in a region influenced by the jet. Results indicated that at jet pressure ratios of 1 to 9, the exhaust jet did not appreciably affect the pressure loadings of the stabilizer.

Kinetic study of mass transfer by sodium hydroxide in nickel under free-convection conditions

Description: An investigation was conducted using static capsules fabricated from "L" nickel tubing to determine the effect of temperature level, temperature gradient, and test duration on corrosion and mass transfer by molten sodium hydroxide under free-convection conditions. A base temperature range from 1000 degrees to 1600 degrees F with temperature differences to 500 degrees was studied. Kinetic Treatment of the Nucleation in Supersaturated Vapors

Description: The equations of the individual processes of self nucleation are utilized through an electrical analogy to obtain the nucleation frequency. This process is shown to be shorter and less subject to error than that of previous investigators since the appearance of indeterminant integration constants is completely avoided. With the nucleation frequencies of crystals and spheres the Ostwald law of stages is reviewed and modified.

Laboratory Development of an Electromagnetic Test for Uranium Quality

Description: An electromagnetic instrument similar to the Multitest was built and used to test 2200 uranium slugs. It was found that the equipment could be used to detect inclusions and cracks in the uranium, but that small cracks are not readily detectable on a production basis unless the material is absolutely uniform in inclusion content. The instrument can be used, however, to sort out hidden defects of a reasonable size and to reject grossly dirty uranium.

Large-scale low-speed wind-tunnel tests of a model having a 60 degree delta horizontal canard control surface and wing to obtain static-longitudinal-stability and canard surface hinge-moment data

Description: Report presenting a wind-tunnel investigation of a model equipped with a 60 degree delta wing and a 60 degree delta horizontal all-movable canard control surface to determine the stability, control, and canard-surface hinge-moment characteristics at low speeds and at a Reynolds number of 9 x 10(exp 6). Lift and drag characteristics of the Douglas X-3 research airplane obtained during demonstration flights to a Mach number of 1.20

Description: Report presenting lift and drag data obtained during the Douglas X-3 airplane. The data covered the Mach number range from 0.82 to 1.20 with considerable variation in lift. A comparison of the flight data with data from wind-tunnel and rocket-model tests shows that the model tests adequately predict the performance of the airplane.

Lift and Moment Equations for Oscillating Airfoils in an Infinite Unstaggered Cascade

Description: Aerodynamic coefficients similar to those of the isolated airfoil are obtained as functions of the cascade geometry and the phasing between successive blades; the phasings considered are zero, 90 degrees, and 180 degrees. These aerodynamic coefficients are plotted for the special case when all the airfoils are vibrating in bending in phase (360 degree phasing). It is shown that the effect of cascading for this case is to reduce greatly the aerodynamic damping.
