Preliminary Investigation of the Loads Carried by Individual Bolts in Bolted Joints

Description: Report presenting a general solution for the determination of loads carried by individual bolts in symmetrical butt joints. Testing was conducted on test specimens made of 24S-T aluminum-alloy plates fastened by two or three 1/4-inch alloy-steel bolts with the bolts in a single line in line with the applied load. Results regarding the determination of bolt loads and deflections from test data, curves of joint load against bolt load, and curves of bolt load against deflection are provided.

Preliminary Investigation of the Relation of the Compressive Strength of Sheet-Stiffener Panels to the Diameter of Rivet Used for Attaching Stiffeners to Sheet

Description: Report discusses the results of compressive testing of 24S-T aluminum-alloy sheet-stiffener panels with five ratios of stiffener thickness to sheet thickness. For each ratio, rivets of five different diameters were used to attach the stiffeners to the sheets. The compressive strengths were found to increase with an increase in the diameter of the rivets until the ratio of rivet diameter to over-all thickness reached a certain point.

A Preliminary Investigation of the Usefulness of Camber in Obtaining Favorable Airfoil-Section Drag Characteristics at Supercritical Speeds

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the possibility of delaying at moderate or large lift coefficients the onset of the abrupt supercritical drag rise of an airfoil section by the use of camber. Results indicated that the addition of camber to the NACA 0010 airfoil leads to significant improvements in the drag characteristics at moderately supercritical speeds .

Preliminary Investigation of Various Ailerons on a 42 Degree Sweptback Wing for Lateral Control at Transonic Speeds

Description: Report presenting an investigation at transonic speeds in the high speed tunnel to determine the rolling-effectiveness characteristics of several aileron arrangements for use on a 42 degree sweptback wing. Results regarding the rolling-moment coefficients, variation of coefficient with Mach number, outboard cusp aileron, and use of the leading-edge flaps are provided.

Preliminary Investigation to Determine Propeller Section Characteristics by Measuring the Pressure Distribution on an NACA 10-(3)(08)-03 Propeller Under Operating Conditions

Description: "An investigation has been made in the Langley 16-foot high-speed tunnel to determine the propeller-section characteristics by measuring the pressure distribution on the airfoil sections of a rotating propeller. The pressures were measured at nine radial stations on an NACA 10-(3)(08)-03 design two-blade propeller. This paper presents the results of the pressure measurements in the form of normal-force and moment coefficients and covers a range of nominal angle of attack (simple blade element t… more

Preliminary Measurements of the Dynamic Lateral Stability Characteristics of the Douglas D-588-II (BuAero No. 37974) Airplane

Description: "This paper presents some data on the dynamic lateral stability characteristics of the Douglas D-558-II (BuAero No. 37974) airplane. For the airplane in the clean condition, the lateral oscillations are lightly damped. In the landing condition, the airplane performs a constant-amplitude lateral oscillation" (p. 1).

Preliminary Report on a Colorimetric Method for the Determination of Microgram Quantities of Thorium : Experiments in the Dissolution of O2 Metal [UO2]

Description: Abstract. thorium can be precipitated as a salt of p-dimethylaminoazophenylarsonic acid at a pH of about 1.5. the precipitate, collected on a sintered glass filter is washed with dilute ammonium hydroxide to dissolve the dye. the amount of thorium is determined by measuring the concentration of the dye spectrophotometrically at a wavelength of 450 millimicrons. Zirconium, which interferes, can be separated and determined using the same reagent in strong hydrochloric. the behavior of thorium… more

Preliminary Report on Existing Active Particle Hazard-200 Areas

Description: "Recent surveys by the Health Instrument Section have disclosed the presence of many small radioactive spots on ground surfaces in the T and B plant areas. Investigation has shown that representative samples of the spots when mechanically separated invariably end in a single radioactive particle."
