Maximum-Lift Investigation of a 1/40-Scale X-1 Airplane Wing at Mach Numbers From 0.60 to 1.15

Description: Report presenting an investigation at transonic speeds to determine the maximum lift characteristics of a wing model of the X-1 airplane. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data for a lift range and range of Mach numbers was collected. Maximum lift was found to be obtained at progressively higher angles of attack as the Mach number was increased.

Maximum Rates of Control Motion Obtained From Ground Tests

Description: Report discusses the results of testing to determine the maximum rates of control stick (elevator) motion and corresponding maximum stick forces that could be exerted based on experiments with several pilots. The main topics explored were the comparison of the maximum rates of push and pull, maximum rates of push and pull when a mental restriction was placed on the pilot, and maximum rates at which the pilot though he would apply the elevator control forces versus the actual application of forc… more

Maximum Temperature in Thin Rectangular Uranium Wafers

Description: Temperature calculations have been made to aid in planning a production test for low level irradiation of the thin rectangular uranium wafers. These uranium wafers, under irradiation in the outer fringe sone, are expected to have a maximum temperature which is less than 10 C above the local water temperature.

Maximum Theorems and Reflections of Simple Waves

Description: Note presenting the solutions corresponding to the reflection of a centered simple wave along a straight wall and along a free streamline of constant pressure in mathematical terms and expressed in terms of a Fourier transform. The solutions are found to be simply reflated to some important solutions arising in the theory of linear partial differential equations.

Maximum theoretical tangential velocity component possible from straight-back converging and converging-diverging stators at supercritical pressure ratios

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the maximum theoretical tangential velocity component possible by expansion about straight-back stator blade trailing edges made by the method of characteristics for converging and converging-diverging stators. Results regarding an approximate method of determining maximum stator exit whirl and comparison of approximate method with method of characteristics are provided.

McDermitt 1° x 2° NTMS Area, Nevada: Data Report (Abbreviated)

Description: From abstract: This abbreviated data report presents results of ground water and stream/surface sediment reconnaissance in the National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) McDermitt 1 x 2* quadrangle. Surface sediment samples were collected at 1337 sites, at a target sampling density of one site per 13 square kilometers (five square miles). Ground water samples were collected at 255 sites and surface water samples were collected at 41 sites. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) results are given for ura… more

McMillan Pumping Station, Washington, D.C.: Hydraulic Model Investigation

Description: Abstract: This model study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of inflow conditions into an existing pump sump that would result with increased discharge capacity due to installation of the three proposed pumps and to develop modifications, if needed, within the confines of the present sump to improve flow distribution to the pump intakes.

The mean aerodynamic chord and the aerodynamic center of a tapered wing

Description: A preliminary study of pitching-moment data on tapered wings indicated that excellent agreement with test data was obtained by locating the quarter-chord point of the average chord on the average quarter-chord point of the semispan. The study was therefore extended to include most of the available data on tapered-wing models tested by the NACA.

Measured and Estimated Lateral Static and Rotary Derivatives of a 1/12-Scale Model of a High-Speed Fighter Airplane With Unswept Wings

Description: Report presenting a low-speed investigation to determine the lateral static and rotary derivatives of a model of a high-speed fighter airplane. The purpose was to compare experimental stability derivatives with derivatives estimated for a wing-fuselage combination, a vertical- and horizontal-tail combination, and a complete model.

Measured and Predicted Dynamic Response Characteristics of a Flexible Airplane to Elevator Control Over a Frequency Range Including Three Structural Modes

Description: Note presenting the longitudinal frequency response of a large flexible swept-wing airplane as determined from its measured response to elevator pulses over the operating Mach number range at a range of altitudes. Response quantities for the nose, center of gravity, wing tip, and tail are shown for frequencies from the airplane short-period mode to the fuselage first-bending mode.

Measured Data Pertaining to Buffeting at Supersonic Speeds of the Douglas D-558-II Research Airplane

Description: Report presenting data obtained from an investigation of the Douglas-D558-II airplane to determine its buffeting characteristics at high lift and supersonic speeds. From Summary: "Buffeting was encountered at normal-force coefficients greater than about 0.7 in the Mach number range from 0.96 to 1.27 but at Mach number of 1.57, a peak normal-force coefficient of 0.80 was attained with no indication of buffeting. The increase in buffet intensity with lift is very gradual at supersonic speed compa… more

Measured Effective Thermal Conductivity of Uranium Oxide Powder in Various Gases and Gas Mixtures

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of the effective thermal conductivities of powders, which included uranium oxide UO(sub 2) powder with a density of 59.5 percent of the density of the solid uranium oxide at a range of temperatures. Helium, argon, and nitrogen gases and mixtures of helium-argon and xenon-krypton gases were introduced into the powder void, and the experimental effective thermal conductivities of the gas-powder mixtures were determined.

Measured Moments of Inertia of 32 Airplanes

Description: "A compilation of the experimentally determined moments of inertia of 32 airplanes is presented. The measurements were obtained at the laboratories of the NACA by means of a pendulum method. The airplanes tested are representative of several types of aircraft of gross weight less than 10,000 pounds. The results are presented in coefficient as well as in dimensional form. An elementary analysis of the data disclosed the possibility of grouping the results according to wing type of the airplane, … more

Measured Vibrational Frequency Distributions of Ni, V, Ti, and Ti.67-Zr.33

Description: The BNL cold neutron facility has been used to obtain inelastic scattering cross section data from three first-row transition elements, titanium, vanadium, and nickel, and a random binary alloy Ti.67-Zr.33. From the data, we have computed vibrational frequency distributions exhibit peaks corresponding to major critical points. A comparison of the distributions from the different samples leads to the following conclusions: 1) The shape of the frequency distributions of the b.c.c. metal (V) and f… more

Measurement & Analysis of Productivity Growth: a Synthesis of Thought

Description: Abstract: Productivity is one of the most important factors influencing our economic well-being. Productivity growth is essential to a higher standard of living and is vital to a sound economic and political environment. However, there has been a slowdown in the growth of productivity in the United States since the mid-1960s. This slowdown has caused concern among policy makers and researchers. Accordingly, several questions persist both in policy and academic circles. Why has productivity been… more
