Investigation at high subsonic speeds of finned and unfinned bodies mounted at various locations from the wings of unswept- and swept-wing--fuselage models, including measurements of body loads

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the effects of location of bodies (finned and unfinned) on the aerodynamic characteristics of unswept- and swept-wing--fuselage models and to determine the aerodynamic loads on the bodies in the presence of the wings. Results for the complete model characteristics and for the body are provided.

Preliminary Low-Speed Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Some Aspects of the Aerodynamic Problems Associated with Missiles Carried Externally in Positions Near Airplane Wings

Description: A low-speed wind-tunnel investigation has been made of some aspects of the aerodynamic problems associated with the use of air-to-air missiles when carried externally on aircraft. Measurements of the forces and moments on a missile model for a range of positions under the mid-semispan location of a 45deg sweptback wing indicated longitudinal and lateral forces with regard to both carriage and release of the missiles. Surveys of the characteristics of the flow field in the region likely to be tr… more

Graphite burn-out resulting from carbon monoxide formation in C Pile

Description: With the introduction of carbon dioxide into the piles as a gas atmosphere, new problems arose which concerned the chemical reactions undergone by the pile graphite with the gas atmosphere. In the interest of obtaining a better understanding of the nature and extent of these graphite-gas reactions, mass spectrometer analyses of the pile gas from a selected sampling port at C Pile were initiated at the time of start-up of that unit and were continued until several steady state conditions had bee… more

Pumping Characteristics for Several Simulated Variable-Geometry Ejectors With Hot and Cold Primary Flow

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the pumping characteristics of eight conical ejectors mounted on a fuselage portion of a supersonic airplane. The diameter ratio, spacing ratio, nozzle pressure, and ejector weight flows were varied. Results regarding the ejector pumping characteristics, comparison with previous results, comparison of data for cold and hot primary flow, and ejector air-supply requirements are provided.

Pumping Characteristics for Several Simulated Variablegeometry Ejectors With Hot and Cold Primary Flow

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the pumping characteristics of eight conical ejectors mounted on a scale fuselage portion of a supersonic airplane. The configurations simulated various positions of a two-position nozzle with a fixed shroud and double-iris exit. Results regarding ejector pumping characteristics, comparison with previous results, comparison of data for cold and hot primary flow, and ejector air-supply requirements are provided.

Measurement and Calculation of Blade Torsional Deflection of Three Supersonic-Type Propellers

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine the blade torsional deflection of three supersonic-type propellers at various operating conditions. Blade-torsional deflection was found to produce appreciable results that can be predicted by theory with good accuracy. Results regarding the efficiency, thrust coefficient, and power coefficient are provided.

Study of Some Dielectric Properties of Suspensions of Magnesium Particles in Mineral Oil

Description: The variation of dielectric constant has been measured as a function of the concentration of magnesium particles; the shape, size, and degree of oxidation of the particles; the temperature; and the frequency of oscillation. The variation of dielectric constant and settling rate was investigated as a function of time. Also investigated were the effects of particle concentration, shape and time on dielectric losses.

Studies of the lateral-directional flying qualities of a tandem helicopter in forward flight

Description: An investigation of the lateral-directional flying qualities of a tandem-rotor helicopter in forward flight was undertaken to determine desirable goals for helicopter lateral-directional flying qualities and possible methods of achieving these goals in the tandem-rotor helicopter. Comparison between directional stability as measured in flight and rotor-off model tests in a wind tunnel shows qualitative agreement and, hence, indicates such wind-tunnel test, despite the absence of the rotors, to … more

Redox contamination: Terminal status report

Description: The Redox ruthenium contamination problem has two distinct phases; the environs contamination as a result of stack emissions, and the in-canyon contamination which controls time and cost factors for plant maintenance. On stack emissions, the probability of serious environs contamination exists so long as the batch-type, permanganate headend ruthenium volatilization process is used. Knowledge of the characteristics of volatilized ruthenium is not adequate today to give complete assurance that th… more
