DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF BOILING REACTORS

Description: Eight boiling reactors, BORAX I, II, III, IV, EBWR, LITR, VBWR, and SPERT I,have been operated to date, and a considerable amount of information exists in regard to their tendencies toward self-induced power oscillations. Data are presented on the following characteristics of the oscillations: power, pressure, temperature, reactivity amplitudes, and their rate of change: thresholds, and harmonic content. Results from three techniques of measuring the reactor transfer function are presented: the… more

Uniform Aqueous Corrosion of Aluminum--Effects of Various Ions

Description: The most important variable in water quality on the uniform corrosion of Al was the pH. Solutions of distilled water containing phosphate ions and citrate ions were the only media which showed a definite specific ion effect. Phosphate inhibited the corrosion and citrate increased it. Oxalate ions appeared to increase corrosion, but the effect is not definitely demonstrated by the data. Corrosion was dependent only on pH in tap water, reactor process water, distilled water, and distilled water c… more

NUCLEAR BATTERY--THERMOCOUPLE TYPE. Quarterly Progress Report No. 8 for October 1, 1958 to December 31, 1958

Description: A demonstration battery containing an 880-curie polonium-2l0 heat source was constructed and tested. The battery initially had an open circuit voltage of 23.6 volts, a maximum output of 161 milliwatts, and an overall efficiency of 0.57%. Details for the construction of the battery generator are given. (For preceding period see MLM-CF-58-4-59.) (auth)

Nuclear Engineering Department Progress Report for May 1-September 30, 1957

Description: Thermal neutron diffusion lengths in bismuth were measured, and measurements on bismuth--graphite lattices were started. Uranium--fased salt phase and distribution studies were continued. A standard cell was designed for determining solute concentrations in fused chloride mixtures and liquid bismuth solutions. Absorption spectroscopy shows promise as a method for determining the concentration of uranium in fused chloride mixtures. Both theoretical and experimental studies were made of xenon rem… more

ANALYSIS OF SELF-SHUTDOWN BEHAVIOR IN THE SPERT I REACTOR

Description: Presented at the 1958 Winter Meeting of the American Nuclear Society, December 9, 1958. Experimental and theoretical work on the selflimiting response of reactors to step and ramp insertions of reactivity is discussed along with the general characteristics of self-limiting power bursts. The static characteristics of the cores investigated are presented and the techniques of measurement are discussed. Data from step and ramp tests are presented and compared with the predictions of a theoretical … more

ACTIVATION CROSS SECTION OF Na$sup 23$ AROUND 3 KEV

Description: The activation cross section of sodium in the range from thermal energy through the 3-kev resonance is generally assumed to be given by the one-level BreitWigner formula, the GAMMA /sub gamma / being selected to describe correctly the known thermal absorption cross section. The contribution of this resonance to the resonance activation integral then turns out to be 0.12 barns. This somewhat indirectly inferred value is considerably larger than the value given by Dancoff et al., in an old paper,… more

An Investigation of Uranium Corrosion in 100 C Water and 200 C Steam at Atmospheric Pressure

Description: Material balance in atmospheric-pressure water and steam corrosion of uranium have been studied by examination of the phase composition and valence state of the corrosion product and by hydrogen-evolution measurements. The corrosion rates in atmospheric-pressure steam above 100 deg C are lower than those obtained in tests carried out in water with a hydrogen overpressure. The atmospheric-pressure-water corrosion product was found to be two phase: an oxygen- rich oxide, UO/sub 2.2/, and uncorrod… more
