Kinetics of Reactions Between Two Liquid Phases

Description: Reactions of particular metallurgical interest are those which take place between two immiscible liquid phases. The common slag, metal reactions, in both smelting and refining processes, are typical examples. May other refining systems use salts instead of slags, such as fused salt processing to remove fission products from liquid metal fuels. If the two phases are immiscible and it is not possible for a solute in one phase to exist in the same molecular form n the other phase, reactions betwee… more

A Transistorized Binary Counter for Extreme Environments

Description: A transistorized binary counter circuit is described that operates over a temperature range of -65 degree F to +165 degree F. the supply voltage is 28 + 4 volts and the maximum trigger repetition rate is 5 kilocycles. the binary circuit is pre-settable and resettable by means of a switching arrangement that can be mechanized. Texas Instrument type 904 silicon transistors whose large signal current gain is 2.8 or greater at a -65 degree F can be used in this circuit.

A Study of Location Times for Positions Arranged on a Panel in a Random and an Ordered Manner

Description: The results of an experimental pilot study on the location time, for a sequence of N specified positions on a panel, are given for 1 <_ N <_ 30. The positions to be located were randomly arranged on one set of panels and arranged according to an ordering scheme on a second set of panels. Th location time for N positions randomly arranged on a panel varies approximately as N(2). In the case of an order arrangement the location time is essentially proportional to N. Even for as few as 30 position… more

A Discussion on the Layout of Elements of a Control Panel

Description: This memorandum is an outline of the principles and methods employed by 5100 Human Engineering Personnel in consultation on test equipment panel layout. The process of control panel layout is partially formalized with particular emphasis on test equipment panels. An experimental method is proposed for selecting an optimum panel layout. The essential role of experimentation is pointed out. The optimal layout for a nonrepetitive procedure is deduced and generalized to give methods of layout solut… more

A Numerical Integration Scheme for Problems Involving Contour Representations

Description: The definition of the Lebesgue integral is used to develop a numerical integration method in which the integral is evaluated directly from a contour plot of the function. It is useful in working from weather maps, potential surfaces, etc., but was particularly designed to assist in reducing blast diffraction space-time diagrams to simple, meaningful quantities.

Frequency Components of a Step Function and a Sinusoid

Description: Fourier analyses are made on two functions. The first is a step function forward from periodic samples of a sinusoid. If the frequency of the sinusoid is less than one-half of the sampling frequency, it is shown that the step function has no frequency components less than one-half of the sampling frequency other than that of phase, and duration with respect to the interval of the analysis. It is shown that the insertion of a blank space in the period of analysis reduces greatly the uncertainty … more

Practical Methods for the Reduction of Strain Gage Data

Description: The error that results when it is attempted to evaluate stress from a reading taken on a single element SR-4 strain gage in a biaxial stress field is discussed. A method is presented for relating SR-4 rosette strain gage readings directly to the biaxial stress state without the necessity of first converting strain gage readings to true strains. Correction formulas are presented for use when single element SR-4 gages are used as rosette elements or as stress gages.

Principles and Techniques of Ultrasonic Inspection

Description: Ultrasonic inspection for subsurface flaws is widely used in American industry. This report reviews the general principles and specific techniques of ultrasonic testing. The information is based on a review of the technical literature plus the experience of the Quality Assurance Department at Sandia Corporation in applying this nondestructive testing technique to quality evaluation programs.

The Effect of Crystallite Size on the Bulk Density and Strength Properties of Uranium Dioxide Specimens

Description: Fused uranium dioxide was separated into fractions of varying particle size by air separation. Specimens of the nominal size of 1/8 by 1/4 by 1½ in. were formed by hydrostatic pressing, firing, and lapping. Specimens prepared from the 0 to 5 μ fraction were the strongest and most dense. The room-temperature density was about 92% of theoretical and the room-temperature flexural strength was about 12,000 1b. per sq. in. When tested at 1000°C., the strength was about 18,000 1b. per sq. in. The fle… more

Search for Uranium in the Philippines : Report of Investigation No. 12

Description: A joint program of preliminary reconnaissance for uranium in the Philippine Islands was arranged and carried out by the Philippine Bureau of Miens and the United States Atomic Energy Commission. There is a possibility that commercial quantities of uranium are present in the Philippines, but considerably more geologic study will be required before any definite conclusions can be drawn or the potential of any specific area determined. On the basis of the present reconnaissance, deposits which are… more

Intermediary Metabolism of the Photosynthetic Bacteria. Final Report

Description: The primary purpose of these researches was to clarify the various functions of organic substrates in bacterial photosynthesis. The following aspects were investigated; (1) metabolic pathways under photosynthetic and oxidative conditions, (2) energy transfers occurring during the metabolism in cell free extracts, and (3) the relationship between photosynthetic rate and light intensity for selected organic substrates. The results of these investigations were summarized in a paper entitled "The A… more

Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation on Chloroplast Reactions and Plant Metabolism

Description: This technical report represents a brief survey of work by this project on the effects of ultraviolet radiation (UV) on certain of the photochemical and metabolic properties of rhubarb chard and sugar beet (Beta vulgaris). These plants were selected for this work because for some years they have been used as sources of chloroplasts for Hill reaction studies in this laboratory. Some of this work has appeared as a brief paper.

High Temperature Scaling Behavior of Zirconium : Second Technical Progress Report

Description: This technical report summarized studies in the high temperature scaling of zirconium, and covers the period from March 1, 1955 to December 15, 1955. One technical progress report covered the progress of the investigation from April 1, 1953 to march 1, 1955. The previous work was concerned largely with the scaling behavior of zirconium in air, pure oxygen, pure nitrogen and mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen. The major finding arising from these studies was that the peculiar scaling behavior of zi… more
