Altitude performance of a turbojet engine using pentaborane fuel

Description: From Summary: "The primary objectives of the investigation reported herein were to determine the effect of this new combuster design on boric oxide deposition on engine parts and to determine the effect of boric oxide on the performance of multistage turbine. Pentaborance fuel (approx. 130 lb) was used in the engine performance evaluation reported herein. The data presented herein show the engine component and over-all performance deterioration with operation on pentaborane fuel".

An Analysis of Vertical-Tail Loads Measured in Flight on a Swept-Wing Bomber Airplane

Description: From Introduction: "This paper presents results of an analysis of shear, bending-moment, and torque loads measured on the vertical tail during rudder-step, rudder-pulse, aileron-roll, and steady-sideslip maneuvers. In order to assess effects of Mach number and altitude, the maneuvers were performed at altitudes of 15,000, 25,000, and 35,000 feet and Mach numbers from 0.49 to 0.82."

The application of matrix methods to coordinate transformations occurring in systems studies involving large motions of aircraft

Description: Report presenting the method and advantages of matrix algebra in setting up the geometric aspects of problems of airplane motion. The paper is divided into two parts. The first is about the aspects of matrix algebra required for use in orthogonal transformations and the other shows how to use orthogonal transformations in matrix form by applying them in several examples.

Appraisal of the Hazards of Friction-Spark Ignition of Aircraft Crash Fires

Description: Note presenting a study to determine if common aircraft metals produce friction sparks capable of igniting combustibles that might be spilled in an airplane crash. Samples of aluminum, titanium, magnesium, chrome-molybdenum steel, and stainless steel were dragged over concrete and asphalt runways while a combustible mixture of gasoline, JP-4 fuel, kerosene, or preheated oil was sprayed around the sample.

Approximate analysis of effects of large deflections and initial twist on torsional stiffness of a cantilever plate subjected to thermal stresses

Description: From Summary: "An approximate analysis of the nonlinear effects of initial twist and large deflections on the torsional stiffness of a cantilever plate subjected to a nonuniform temperature distribution is presented. The Von Karman large-deflection equations are satisfied through the use of a variational principle. The results show that initial twist and applied moments can have significant effects on the changes in stiffness produced by nonuniform heating, particularly in the region of the buc… more

Bonded lead monoxide films as solid lubricants for temperatures up to 1250 degrees F

Description: Report presenting a friction, wear, and endurance-lift study made with bonded films of mixed oxides containing lead monoxide (PbO) as the main component. The coatings lubricated over the entire temperature range, but were far more effective from 500 to 1250 degrees Fahrenheit than at the lower temperatures. Results regarding the effect of silica additions on coating formation, determination of coating composition, effect of coating thickness on friction and wear, effect of temperature on fricti… more

Cascade investigation of a related series of 6-percent-thick guide-vane profiles and design charts

Description: Report presenting a description of a new blade series designed to operate at near choking inlet Mach numbers and to have near maximum critical Mach numbers by employing high aerodynamic loading of the profiles in the leading-edge region. Results regarding aerodynamic characteristics and prediction of high-speed performance are provided.

Characteristics of a 40 Degree Cone for Measuring Mach Number, Total Pressure, and Flow Angles at Supersonic Speeds

Description: Note presenting an experimental investigation conducted to determine the characteristics of a 40 degree cone for use in the measurement of Mach number, total pressure, and flow angles. The cone had a total-pressure orifice at the apex and four equally spaced static-pressure orifices on the surface and pressure measurements were taken at a range of angles of pitch, Mach numbers, and Reynolds numbers. Results regarding cone pressure distribution, determination of Mach number, determination of tot… more

Charts for the analysis of flow in a whirling duct

Description: From Summary: "Charts are developed for the analysis of flow in a whirling constant-diameter duct. These charts permit the determination of the duct-exit Mach number, or the Mach number at any point along the duct, for practical ranges of duct-inlet Mach number, duct-tip Mach number, friction factor, ratio of ambient temperature to duct-flow total temperature, ratio of duct-tip radius to duct hydraulic diameter, and heat conductivity through the duct wall and surrounding material. The method of… more

Chemical Processing Department monthly report, April 1957

Description: Two new production records were set during April, for processed U and Pu production. 0.9 tons sheared NRX fuel were dissolved in Redox. Discrepancies in Pu yield are being studied. Alternate methods of recovering Np are being evaluated. The Purex prototype facility will be converted to the anion exchange process. Alternate designs for a Purex miniature service dissolver were reviewed. The Purex HA column will be replaced.

A Coaxial Static-Electromagnetic Velocity Spectrometer for HighEnergy Particles

Description: An apparatus is described in which crossed E and H fields will be used to separate high-energy charged particles of different masses. It is shown that use of coaxial geometry is expected to effect satisfactory separation within a considerably shorter system than would be possible in a parallel-plate system with a comparable separation criterion, A summary is given of the operational characteristics of a spectrometer now under construction.

Concluding Report of Free-Spinning, Tumbling, and Recovery Characteristics of a 1/18-Scale Model of the Ryan X-13 Airplane, Coord. No. AF-199

Description: "An investigation has been completed in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel on a l/18-scale model of the Ryan X-13 airplane to determine its spin, recovery, and tumbling characteristics, and to determine the minimum altitude from which a belly landing could be made in case of power failure in hovering flight. Model spin tests were conducted with and without simulated engine rotation. Tests without simulated engine rotation indicated two types of spins: one, a slightly oscillatory flat spin… more

DEVELOPMENT AND PROPERTIES OF URANIUM-BASE ALLOYS CORROSION RESISTANT IN HIGH TEMPERATURE WATER. PART IV. RADIATION STABILITY OF URANIUM-BASE ALLOYS

Description: The effects of pile irradiations on the physical properties and corrosion resistance of U-- Mo, U-- Nb; and U--Si alloys are reported. The dimensional stability under irradiation of the gamma phase U-- Mo and U-- Nb alloys is excellent; however, an isotropic volume increase of 4 to 6% per wt.% burnup may limit the ultimate fuel element life. Corrosion resistance of the gamma-phase alloys appesrs to be improved when subjected to s neutron field; this is attributed to an irrsdiation induced stabi… more
