Achievements in HAPO radiation monitoring, 1944--1954

Description: At HAPO the protection of employees from nuclear radiations has paralleled or preceded the emphasis on atomic products production. The production of atomic products on the scale for which HAPO was designed presented voluminous problems in employee education, radiation detection, shielding, and indeed, fundamental research to determine working limits for the various types of radiation exposure which would necessarily be encountered, and to determine working limits for the deposition of radioacti… more

Age Determination of Zircon Crystals From Ceylon

Description: From Abstract: "Age determinations have been made on 21 crystals of gem quality zircon from Ceylon which are believed to have been derived from pegmatites of pre-Cambrian age."

Analysis of Rocket, Ram-Jet, and Turbojet Engines for Supersonic Propulsion of Long-Range Missiles 2 - Rocket Missile Performance

Description: From Summary: "The theoretical performance of a two-stage ballistic rocket missile having a centerbody and two parallel boosters was investigated for J oxygen and ammonia-fluorine propellants. Both power-plant and missile parameters were optimized to give minimum cost on-the basis of the analysis for a range of 5500 nautical miles. After optimum values were found, each parameter was varied independently to determine its effect on performance of the missile."

Application of Two-Dimensional Vortex Theory to the Prediction of Flow Fields Behind Wings of Wing Body Combinations at Subsonic and Supersonic Speeds

Description: Note presenting a theoretical investigation of a general method for predicting the flow field behind the wings of plane and cruciform wing and body combinations at transonic or supersonic speeds and slender configurations at supersonic speeds. The effects of certain geometric parameters as aspect ratio, angle of attack and incidence, ratio of body radius to wing semispan, and angle of bank on the vortex wake behidn wings of wing-body combinations were studied.

Aspects of internal-flow-system design for helicopter propulsive units

Description: A discussion of pertinent items related to the design of internal-flow systems for reciprocating engine, turbine engine, and pressure-jet installations in helicopters. The following items are emphasized: controllable exit and ram recovery for reciprocating-engine cooling, performance penalties possible in turbine-engine installations, the effects of high subsonic flow velocities on the performance of duct elements, and the effects of centrifugal forces on the flow in a ducted helicopter rotor.

Chattanooga Shale Investigations Along the Sequatchie Anticline of Tennessee and Alabama

Description: From abstract: "In 1953 the Chattanooga shale in the Sequatchie anticline was tested for its uranium content by seven diamond drill cores. Concurrent with the drilling, geologic field work was done to determine the distribution, thickness, and structural setting of the shale." The report contains information regarding location and drainage, geology, the drilling program, subdivisions of the Sequatchie anticline, and unpublished reports.

Chattanooga shale investigations along the Sequatchie anticline of Tennessee and Alabama

Description: "The results of an investigation of the Chattanooga shale along the Sequatchie anticline of Tennessee and Alabama are summarized in this report. The project was of an exploratory nature designed to 1) obtain fresh core samples from areas where analyses of outcrop samples showed uranium contents as high or higher than those of the Youngs Bend area in DeKalb County, Tenn.; 2) learn more about the distribution and thickness of the shale in those areas and, if necessary, do some geologic mapping; 3… more

Combined compressor coolant injection and afterburning for turbojet thrust augmentation

Description: Report presenting a discussion of some of the requirements and of the application of the augmented performance of compressor coolant injection and afterburning in a turbojet engine in a high-speed, high-altitude flight. Results regarding the experimental performance of a combined system and the application of augmented performance to high-speed flight are provided.

Comparison of Wind-Tunnel, Rocket, and Flight Drag Measurements for Eight Airplane Configurations at Mach Numbers Between 0.7 and 1.6

Description: Report presenting comparisons of low-lift drag measurements on eight airplane configurations at a range of Mach numbers by various techniques. Data was obtained from wind tunnel testing, rocket propelled model tests, and airplane flight tests. The agreement of data is generally good and no consistent Reynolds number effects are observed.

Comparison of Wind-Tunnel, Rocket, and Flight Drag Measurements for Eight Airplane Configurations at Mach Numbers Between 0.7 and 1.6

Description: Report presenting comparisons of low-lift drag measurements on eight airplane configurations at a range of Mach numbers using various techniques. Data was obtained from wind-tunnel testing, rocket-propelled model testing, and airplane flight testing. The majority of the data showed agreement and discrepancies were likely due to issues regarding surface condition, individual test setup and accuracy, and detail geometric differences between the airplanes and respective models.

Determination of Thorium in Plutonium-Thorium Alloys

Description: A spectrophotometric method used in the determination of thorium was modified for the purpose of analyzing plutonium alloys which contained 0.01 to 0.8 percent thorium. Absorbance values were measured at 545 millimicrons for solutions containing thorium and thorin, the organic reagent added to form a colored complex with thorium in the presence of plutonium (III) . With plutonium-thorium 0.8 percent thorium, the average recovery of thorium was 99.6 +- 1.5 percent. For similar samples containing… more
