Aerodynamic Characteristics at Mach Numbers From 2.5 to 3.5 of a Canard Bomber Configuration Designed for Supersonic Cruise Flight

Description: Report presenting an investigation of a canard-type configuration designed for supersonic cruise flight in the Unitary Plan wind tunnel. Tests were conducted over a range of angles of attack and angles of sideslip. Results regarding the effect of forebody configuration, effects of Reynolds number and transition, effect of canard and elevon deflection, and effect of vertical surfaces are provided.

Aerodynamic Performance and Static Stability and Control of Flat-Top Hypersonic Gliders at Mach Numbers From 0.6 to 18

Description: Memorandum presenting a study of aerodynamic performance and static stability and control at hypersonic speeds. In the first part of the study, the effect of interference lift is investigated by tests of asymmetric models with conical fuselages and arrow plan-form wings. In the second part, the aerodynamic performance and static stability and control characteristics of a hypersonic glider are investigated in somewhat greater detail.

Alternative actions on the K stack problem

Description: On June 6, 1958, KW Operations had HCR Channel No. 16 borescoped to determine why this rod could not be inserted on May 3. Observations revealed 3X balls in the channel and horizontal separation between graphite blocks ranging from 1/2 inch to 2 1/4 inch. The separations were noted only in the first fifteen feet in from the outer skin and in the last five feet of the channel. Description: From Introduction: "Wind-tunnel and flight tests have shown that conical leading-edge camber on a thin low-aspect-ratio delta wing results in increasing the lift-drag ratio at transonic and low supersonic speeds (refs. 1 and 2). References 3 and 4 present the results of two previous investigations of this general program. A more detailed analysis of the pressure distributions of reference 5 is presented herein in terms of total section loads and overall wing-body characteristics."

THE APPLICATION OF THE CHIP AND SHOT METHODS TO THE PREPARATION OF HOMOGENEOUS ALLOYS

Description: Chip method experiments were performed for the preparation of Th - 9 wt.% U, U - 10 wt.% Nb, and Al--16 wt.% U - 0.2 wt.% B alloys. The work on Th-9 wt.% U indicated that the technique was applicable with oniy slight impairment of mechanical properties and slight increase of oxygen content. Experiments on U-10 wt.% Nb to produce a more corrosion-resistant alloy were not successful. Approximate Method for Calculation of Laminar Boundary Layer With Heat Transfer on a Cone at Large Angle of Attack in Supersonic Flow

Description: Note presenting the use of an integral technique to reduce the laminar boundary-layer equations on the windward generator of the plane of symmetry to a set of simultaneous algebraic equations. The method enables the skin friction coefficients and Stanton number to be calculated in a much shorter time than was needed to obtain exact numerical solutions from the boundary-layer equations.

Casualty study of KER-1 loop dump valve

Description: A study has been made to determine the adequacy of the KER-1 loop emergency dump valve in protecting the fuel elements against damage during a loop casualty. In a functional test of the radiation trip procedure of the KER-1 loop during a reactor outage, it was found that the indicated process water flow was much lower than expected. Description: The cause and significance of the changes in chemical composition of the HRT fuel and changes in reactivity during operation, particularly in run 17A, were investigated.
