Absolute Cross Sections of the Reaction P + P - w+ + d

Description: Absolute differential cross sections for the reaction p + p - w+ + d were obtained by detecting meson-deuteron coincidences produced by passing the 340-Mev external proton beam of the Berkeley synchro-cyclotron through a liquid hydrogen target.

Accuracy of Relaxation Length Measurements

Description: We consider here the accuracy of relaxation lengths measured during the water-uranium lattice experiments. Since such an analysis for all measurements would take a great deal of time, we have applied it to just one lattice. This one (2:1 water-to-metal ratio) was chosen completely at random.

Aerodynamics of slender bodies at Mach number of 3.12 and Reynolds numbers from 2 x 10(exp 6) to 15 x 10(exp 6) 3: boundary layer and force measurements on a slender cone-cylinder body of revolution

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a slender cone-cylinder body of revolution in the 1- by 1-foot supersonic wind tunnel. Viscous drag and three component forces were measured at Mach number 3.12 and a range of Reynolds numbers and angles of attack. Results regarding pressure distributions, boundary layer, and forces are provided.

Altitude Starting Characteristics of an Afterburner With Autoignition and Hot-Streak Ignition

Description: "Ignition of the fuel-air mixture in an afterburner of turbojet engine at altitude has often proved to be a different problem to solve. Electrical ignition has not proven satisfactory because of the unreliability of such systems (ref. 1). The ignition data reported herein were obtained for two after-burner configurations. Autoignition data are included for both configurations and hot-streak-ignition data, for only one. "

Analysis of heat addition in a convergent-divergent nozzle

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of this report is to treat analytically heat addition heat addition to a divergent stream with initially sonic flow and to employ the results thus obtained in evaluating the effect of delayed combustion on convergent-divergent nozzle performance."

Analysis of Heat Transfer and Fluid Friction for Fully Developed Turbulent Flow of Supercritical Water With Variable Fluid Properties in a Smooth Tube

Description: From Summary: "Calculated velocity and temperature distributions, as well as relations among Nusselt number, Reynolds number, and friction factor, are presented. The effect of variation of fluid properties across the tube on the Nusselt number and friction factor correlations can be eliminated by evaluating the properties at a reference temperature which is a function of both the wall temperature and the ratio of wall-to-bulk temperatures."

Analytical Studies of the Response to Longitudinal Control of Three Airplane Configurations in Landing Approaches

Description: Memorandum presenting a theoretical investigation to determine the reasons for poor airplane response to longitudinal control. Some effects of airplane configuration on the response, primarily for short time periods, were also determined. Results regarding a comparison of three airplanes, the effect of changes on airplane B, and the effect of changes on airplane C are provided.

Analytical studies of the response to longitudinal control of three airplane configurations in landing approaches

Description: From Introduction: "A theoretical investigation was conducted in order to determine what effect the differences in aerodynamic characteristics would have on the short-time response to elevator control of this type of airplane as compared with the responses of a conventional airplane, without regard to any possible psychological influences. The results of this investigation are presented in this paper."

The Angular Distribution of the Reaction p + p--d + w+ at 338 Mev

Description: The angular distribution of the reaction p + p--w+ + d has been measured with the meson and deuteron detected in coincidence. Measurements were made at 30' and 90' in the center of mass system for an incident proton energy of 338 Mev. Similar measurements were made at 30', 60' and 90' for 332 Mev protons.

Application of the Ewing Equation for Calculating Thermal Conductivity From Electrical Conductivity

Description: The usefulness of the Ewing equation for calculating the thermal conductivity of reactor metals and alloys from electrical resistance, specific heat, density, and atomic weight was investigated. The alloys investigated were Zircaloy-2, HSZA, Nb- 5.5 wt% V, Inconel, 18-8 stainless steel, and eutectic NaK. The Ewing equation was found to give calculated values with a degree of confidence similar to that of actual measured values. (auth)

A Ball Holder for Coating Operations

Description: A device has been designed which will support small spheres and cylinders in a vacuum system during a plating operation. While supporting the object to be plated, the device automatically shifts the position of the supports so that the coating is evenly distributed. This report describes the mechanism by which this motion is achieved.

Chemistry Division Quarterly Report: December, 1952, January, February, 1953 - The Solubility of Hydrogen and Deuterium in Various Solvents

Description: In the past year, exploratory data have been taken to determine the relative solubilities of hydrogen and deuterium in various solvents in the vicinity of room temperature and atmospheric pressure. This investigation is one phase of a program to determine the feasibility of separating deuterium from hydrogen by means of rectified absorption.

Combustion in the Wake as a Means of Body-Drag Reduction as Determined from Free-Flight Tests of 40-Millimeter Shells

Description: "The results of free-flight drag tests of 40-millimeter shells conducted by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics for the Ballistic Research Laboratories, Ordnance Department, U. S. Army, are presented. A drag reduction at supersonic speeds of approximately 20 percent of the projectile's drag was obtained by combustion in the wake of the projectile in flight" (p. 1).

Corrosion of Stainless Steels in Purex Acid Concentrators

Description: The corrosion resistance of four types of austenitic stainless steels to Purex process first and second acid concentrator bottoms was determined. Although the compositions of the two solutions were very similar, tests in simulated solutions of both compositions were conducted to strengthen the basis for the conclusions which were to be made.

Critical mass information applied to purex and recuplex design

Description: Some time ago, a series of experiments (the P-11 project) were conducted to determine the critical mass of plutonium in variously sized and shaped vessels and with various solution concentrations. These experiments were rather general in nature, hence, it is necessary to interpret the data to the specific critical mass problems of interest in separation processes. The design of new continuous flow separation processes calls for even further extrapolations of these data to vessel geometries far … more

Damping in Pitch of Low-Aspect-Ratio Wings at Subsonic and Supersonic Speeds

Description: Memorandum presenting the application of the concept of indicial functions to the analysis of the aerodynamic phenomena associated with the short-period pitching mode of wings in subsonic and supersonic flight. Simple physical relationships are pointed out and are used to study the effect on the rotary-damping-moment coefficient of changes in center-of-gravity position, Mach number, aspect ratio, plan form, frequency, and thickness.
