100 mg $sup 251$Cf activation analysis facility at the Savannah River Laboratory

Description: The $sup 252$Cf Activation Analysis Facility at the Savannah River Laboratory (SRL) is used routinely for multielement analyses of a wide variety of solid and liquid samples (e.g., metal alloys, fly ash and other airborne particles, rocks, and aqueous and nonaqueous solutions). An automated absolute activation analysis technique, developed to use neutron transport codes to calculate multienergy group neutron spectra and fluxes, converts counting data directly into elemental concentrations expre… more

120 kA pulsed dc power system with computerized thyristor triggering

Description: A pulsed dc power system provides 120 kA excitation current for the ORMAK toroidal field coils. A drive potential of 1000 volts brings the coils up to full current in about 0.5 seconds. Constant current is maintained for 0.25 seconds, then approximately 20 x 10$sup 6$ joules of stored energy is dumped in a free-wheeling diode and resistance network. The power system contains 8 each, 30 kA, 500 V thyristor controlled dc power modules in a series/parallel combination. A control computer generates… more

120-keV beam direct conversion system for TFTR injectors

Description: Several practical motivations exist for the development of beam direct conversion systems that are compatible with the injection systems of large experiments such as the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR). We present a preliminary design in which we analyze the most acute problems involved in scaling up existing designs and apparatus to fulfill TFTR requirements. Some of the questions addressed are the requirements for electron suppression, gas pumping, compactness, and power densities. A new i… more

120-keV Neutral-Beam Injection System Development

Description: The neutral-beam injection systems for the next generation of U. S. fusion experiments (TFTR, MX, Doublet III) have requirements that considerably exceed the present state of development. TFTR, for example, desires 20 MW of 120-keV deuterium atoms in pulses of 0.5-sec duration. The neutral-beam systems needed to meet these demands will be large and complex and will require much development effort. In order to develop components for these new systems, a new, large test facility was constructed. … more

150-kV, 80-A solid state power supply for neutral beam injection

Description: A 150-kV, 80-A power supply and neutral beam test facility is now operational at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Berkeley, California. This supply uses banks of 450-V electrolytic capacitors for over 10/sup 6/ joules of energy storage. SCR switches control the power flow to the neutral beam accelerator. Turn on and off times of a few microseconds are possible. An auxiliary capacitor bank also uses SCR switches to provide regulation (''flat-topping'') of the main bank output by switching in ad… more

150 kWe solar-powered deep-well irrigation facility. Phase I. Preliminary design study. Final report

Description: Results of a preliminary design study for a solar-powered irrigation facility to be located on a farm between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, are presented. The ERDA-specified generic design criteria are detailed. A detailed systems analysis is presented, and preliminary designs of the thermal storage system, organic Rankine cycle power system, cooling water system, power distribution system, and collector foundation are given. Site layout and improvements are described, and a cost analysis of pro… more

150-m measurement of 0. 880- to 100. 0-keV neutron transmissions through four samples of /sup 238/U

Description: In order to study the /sup 238/U + n total cross section, neutron transmissions through 0.076-, 0.254-, 1.080-, and 3.620-cm-thick samples of isotopically enriched /sup 238/U have been measured from 0.880 to 100.0 keV using a time-of-flight technique over a path length of 150 meters with the ORELA pulsed source and a 13-mm-thick Li-glass detector. The measurement is described in detail and both a listing and figures of the resulting transmissions are given. An absolute energy scale accurate to … more

200 amp Neutral Beam Source

Description: Recent efforts in controlled fusion experiments have indicated the need for large neutral-beam sources to provide an initial plasma for further plasma buildup, for use as a stoking source to makeup losses, or for plasma heating. Experiments now operating or envisioned for the near future anticipate the need for kilo-amp neutral beams in the 20-keV energy range and higher. These sources will be required to focus into relatively small-volume targets, have good gas efficiency, and use a minimum of… more

200-GeV ISA with room temperature magnets

Description: A conceptual design study of 200-GeV proton intersecting storage accclerators with room temperature magnets is presented. The key to this study was thc desire to keep the electric power consumptiom to an acceptable level (40 MW). The design has been optimized by choosing small-gap (4 cm) aluminum coil dipoles operating at about 15 kG. The luminosity of this machine is limited to about 10/sup 32/ cm-/sup -2/ sec/sup -1/ by transverse space-charg e effects. An order of magnitude higher luminositi… more

200-GeV proton-proton elastic scattering at high transverse momentum

Description: This is a proposal to study p-p elastic scattering at the highest possible P{sub {perpendicular}}{sup 2} at NAL, using a CH{sub 2} or H{sub 2} target placed directly in the extracted beam and a double arm spectrometer. We expect to be able to set an upper limit at the level d{sigma}/dt/d{sigma}/dt{sub t=0} {approx} 10{sup -14}. This would be sufficient to determine if there are exactly three regions in the p-p interaction with considerable precision.

200 kW, 800 MHz transmitter system for lower hybrid heating

Description: This paper describes a new rf heating system which has just been completed and is now operational on the ATC machine. The system utilizes four UHF TV klystrons to generate at least 200 kW of power at a frequency of 800 MHz. Pulse widths can be varied from 20 $mu$sec up to 20 msec. A radar type floating deck modulator along with photo-optical transmitting and receiving devices have been incorporated into the system to provide the pulse fidelity and versatility which characterizes this equipment.… more

A 218 neutron group master cross section library for criticality safety studies

Description: The AMPX system was used to generate a P$sub 3$ 218 neutron group master cross-section library from ENDF/B-IV data for the fuel, structural, and neutron- absorbing materials tabulated. The library is the data base for the generation of broad-group cross sections for shipping cask calculations and other criticality safety analyses using codes such as KENO and ANISN. Selection of the fine-group energy structure for the 3-eV to 20-MeV energy range included consideration of the resonance structure … more

234-5 bank tank circulation studies

Description: In the Plutonium Reclamation Facility a critically-safe geometry of the processing vessels, combined with economical utilization of building space, has resulted in manifolded, vertical tanks for blending, receiving, holding, etc. The pumps attached to the bottom-outlet manifolds of the tanks are of a canned motor type. The extremely short life of these pumps (considerably below that expected even in severe abrasive and corrosive service) prompted a series of studies using glass tanks containing… more
