The Usefulness of Stunting

Description: Stunting is an important part of the training of a military pilot, and the knowledge gained in passing through the "acrobatic course" is put to constant use in service, especially with fighting aircraft.

The Variable Density Wind Tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics

Description: This report contains an exact description of the new wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. This is the first american type wind tunnel. It differs from ordinary wind tunnels by its being surrounded by a strong steel shell, 35 feet long and 15 feet in diameter. A compressor system is provided to fill this shell - and hence the entire wind tunnel - with air compressed to a density up to 25 times the ordinary atmospheric density.

Variable Pitch Propeller

Description: The advantages of variable pitch propellers over constant pitch propellers is presented along with different methods of varying the pitch. The technique of varying the shape of the propeller is presented as the most efficient one.

Variable Pitch Propellers

Description: In this report are described four different types of propellers which appeared at widely separated dates, but which were exhibited together at the last Salon de l'Aeronautique. The four propellers are the Chaviere variable pitch propeller, the variable pitch propeller used on the Clement Bayard dirigible, the variable pitch propeller used on Italian dirigibles, and the Levasseur variable pitch propeller.

Variable Pitch Propellers

Description: It is proposed in this report to explain the Gloster Hele-Shaw Beacham variable pitch propeller. It is a variable pitch propeller, which has been theorized to greatly improve the performance of an airplane or airship. An explanation of the way the propeller works and some of the physics behind propeller operation are provided.

A Variable Speed Fan Dynamometer

Description: Fan brakes used as absorption dynamometers in testing internal combustion engines have the disadvantage that a given fan will run only at one speed when the engine is delivering full power. In order to be able to vary the speed at which a given power will be absorbed, English manufacturers have for some time been using a cylindrical housing around the fan with one or two variable openings in the periphery. Here, results are given of tests conducted to determine how great a range of speed can be… more

The Variation in Engine Power With Altitude Determined From Measurements in Flight With a Hub Dynamometer

Description: "The rate of change in power of aircraft engines with altitude has been the subject of considerable discussion. Only a small amount of data from direct measurements of the power delivered by airplane engines during flight, however, has been published. This report presents the results of direct measurements of the power delivered by a Liberty 12 airplane engine taken with a hub dynamometer at standard altitudes from zero to 13,000 feet. Six flights were made with the engine installed in a modifi… more

The Variation in Pressures in the Cockpit Fan Airplane in Flight

Description: "The results of an investigation to determine the pressures in the open cockpit of a Vought VE-7 airplane are given. The information has been considered valuable on account of its possible effect upon the operation of instruments, particularly altimeters, due to a variation from the true static pressure which is induced by the passage of the airplane through the air. The observed values are small and the effect upon instruments is inconsiderable" (p. 1).

The variation of aerofoil lift and drag coefficients with changes in size and speed

Description: This report contains the results of an investigation into the effect of changes in size and speed upon aerofoil lift and drag coefficients. Certain empirical limitations to the interchangeability of v and l in the general equation of fluid resistance are pointed out and the existing methods of correcting for scale are criticized. New methods of correcting for scale by means of simple formulae are derived and checked by comparison with test results.

The vector ruling protractor

Description: The theory, structure and working of a vector slide rule is presented in this report. This instrument is used for determining a vector in magnitude and position when given its components and its moment about a point in their plane.

The vertical, longitudinal, and lateral accelerations experienced by an S. E. 5a airplane while maneuvering

Description: "This investigation was carried out by the Langley Field Laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics for the purpose of measuring the accelerations along the three principal axes of an airplane while it was maneuvering. The airplane selected for this purpose was the fairly maneuverable SE-5A and the instruments used were the NACA three component accelerometer and the NACA recording airspeed meter. The results showed that the normal accelerations did not exceed 4.000 G. While t… more

Viscosity of diesel engine fuel oil under pressure

Description: In the development of Diesel engine fuel injection systems it is necessary to have an approximate knowledge of the absolute viscosity of the fuel oil under high hydrostatic pressures. This report presents the results of experimental tests conducted by Mr. Jackson Newton Shore, utilizing the A.S.M.E. high pressure equipment.
