Wheel Brakes and Their Application to Aircraft

Description: "The advantages to be gained from braking have not been ignored, and in the search for a suitable method many schemes have been suggested and tried. Some of the methods discussed in this paper include: 1) increasing the height of the landing gear; 2) air brakes of various forms; 3) sprags on tail skid and axle; and 4) wheel brakes. Wind-Tunnel Corrections at High Subsonic Speeds Particularly for an Enclosed Circular Tunnel

Description: A review of existing publications on wind-tunnel corrections is followed by an approximate method for determining the corrections due to model and wake displacement and to lift. Relations are investigated for fuselages and wings of various spans in closed circular tunnels. A comparison is made between the computations and the tests in the DVL high-speed wind tunnel.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Horizontal Motion of a Wing Near the Ground

Description: "By the method of images the horizontal steady motion of a wing at small heights above the ground was investigated in the wind tunnel, A rectangular wing with Clark Y-H profile was tested with and without flaps. The distance from the trailing edge of the wing to the ground was varied within the limits 0.75 less than or = s/c less than or = 0.25. Measurements were made of the lift, the drag, the pitching moment, and the pressure distribution at one section" (p. 1).

Wind Tunnel Tests of Correction Formula for Wings of Large Span

Description: The theory (wing experiments in an artificial air stream are subject to error, due to the fact that the wing is not situated in an unlimited body of air) by means of which the given drag correction was obtained, was based on various assumptions (e.g., elliptical distribution of lift) which do not always hold true. Wind-Tunnel Tests on Various Types of Dive Brakes Mounted in Proximity of the Leading Edge of the Wing

Description: "The present report is concerned with a series of tests on a model airplane fitted with four types of dive flaps of various shapes, positions, and incidence located near the leading edge of the wing (from 5 to 20 percent of the wing chord). Wrinkling of Reinforced Plates Subjected to Shear Stresses

Description: An analysis is made here of the problem of long plates with transverse stiffeners subject to shear. A typical example would be a long Wagner beam. The shear stress is calculated at which the web wrinkles and shear stress becomes a maximum. The equation is solved for both a condition of free support and rigidity of support on the edges.

Wrinkling Phenomena of Thin Flat Plates Subjected to Shear Stresses

Description: This report covers a series of tests on thin flat elastic strips restrained at two parallel edges and subjected to shear by conversely directed stresses. Theoretical treatments, particularly those of Lilly, Southwell and Skan, and Timoshenko are briefly outlined. The problem to be solved by these tests was to find out whether, and to what extent the conditions and assumptions upon which the calculations are based are complied with in the tests.
