Nuclear vs Solar Power for Earth-Orbit Missions, August 26-30, 1974

Description: The anticipated development of advanced nuclear-radioisotope power systems has led to a reevaluation of their possible utility in earth-orbit missions of various kinds. Because such missions almost always have the option of using solar-power, a decision for nuclear power will have to be based on clear economic grounds, in most cases. However, the economic evaluation must be based on overall system factors, not on power-system cost comparisons alone. On this basis, the advanced nuclear systems c… more

Nucleation of voids. Progress report, October 1, 1972--January 31, 1974

Description: Homogeneous nucleation theory was generalized to include the nucleating effects of both mobile and immobile gas atoms in a material supersaturated with both vacancies and interstitials. Sample calculations were made using properties typical of those of nickel and helium. It was found that at the low damage rates typically found in reactors, nucleation occurs on gas atoms, while under typical accelerator conditions, homogeneous nucleation will dominate. (auth)

Numerical solution of the Navier--Stokes equations at high Reynolds numbers

Description: A numerical method is presented which is designed to solve the Navier- Stokes equations for two-dimensional, incompressible flow. The method is intended for use on problems with high Reynolds numbers for which calculations via finite difference methods have been unattainable or unreliable. The proposed scheme is a hybrid utilizing a time-splitting finite difference method in areas away from the boundaries. In areas neighboring the boundaries, the equations of motion are solved by the newly prop… more

Once-through steam generator (OTSG) materials and water chemistry. [PWR]

Description: Materials and water chemistry research results associated with the development of the Oconee-1 Reactor steam generator are presented. A summary of water chemistry data acquired during preoperational testing and power operation to date is also included. These data confirm the operational practicality of the nuclear once-through concept using volatile water treatment and high purity condensate demineralized feedwater.

Operational safety report for the cleaning of non-radioactive, sodium-wetted reactor components with ethyl alcohol

Description: The safety aspects of the removal of sodium from nonradioactive reactor components by the alcohol process are described in detail. Pertinent properties of alcohol and hydrogen are presented. Relevant excerpts from the Occupational Safety and Health Act safety codes are presented, and a conceptual system is shown illustrating the application of these safety measures.
