3-D object reconstruction emission and transmission tomography with limited angular input

Description: The effects of the angular range of data taking in reconstructions in planar positron cameras using the deconvolution method and the matrix method, respectively, are investigated. It is found that in the absence of any a priori information there are undetermined components in the reconstruction if the field of view of the positron camera is limited. Description: The 10-cm (grid diameter) duoPIGatron ion source produces pulsed hydrogen ion beams of 10 to 15 A beam current in the 20- to 40-keV energy range for a duration of a few tenths of a second. 25 megajoule energy storage and delivery system for the Shiva laser

Description: A 25 megajoule, 20 kV capacitive energy storage and delivery system has been built and tested for Shiva--a 20 arm, 10 kJ, 20 TW neodymium glass fusion research laser. This system supplies over 3.5 megamperes to xenon flashlamps for optical pumping of the laser amplifier. About 15% of the energy is used to establish magnetic fields within Faraday rotator glass. Description: Descriptions of all the entries in the competition are presented. Competition rules and judging procedures are described. Entries consisted of team efforts from colleges and universities. The competition called for the student teams to develop means for producing electrical power sufficient to meet the needs of a single family home, using an energy source other than oil or natural gas. 2660 A holographic interferometry of laser produced plasmas from tilted disk targets

Description: Using double exposure holographic interferometry, an investigation has been made of the Nd laser produced plasmas surrounding disk targets irradiated at different angles of incidence. Measurements have produced a detailed description of the plasma profile necessary for realistic simulations of resonance absorption. Absolute two plasmon parametric decay of obliquely incident electromagnetic waves in an inhomogeneous plasma

Description: The parametric decay of an electromagnetic wave into two electron plasma waves is considered. The electromagnetic wave is obliquely incident on the density gradient. The resulting analysis shows that the threshold for absolute instability decreases as the angle of incidence of the electromagnetic wave relative to the density gradient approaches 90/sup 0/. The importance of this result to laser fusion is discussed.

Absorption of short-pulse electromagnetic energy by a resistively loaded straight wire

Description: Absorption of short-pulse electromagnetic energy by a resistively loaded straight wire is examined. Energy collected by the wire, load energy, peak load currents, and peak load voltages are found for a wide range of parameters, with particular emphasis on nuclear electromagnetic pulse (EMP) phenomena. A series of time-sequenced plots is used to illustrate pulse propagation on wires when loads and wire ends are encountered. (auth)

Acceleration of Partially Stripped Ions at the Bevalac

Description: We present results of the first attempts to accelerate partially stripped heavy ions in the Bevatron. Experiments were performed for hydrogen-like argon and neon ions, and, although the survival time of these ions in the 10{sup -7} torr Bevatron vacuum was not sufficient to achieve full energy, valuable charge-changing cross section information was obtained.
