190-H drawdown test

Description: A discrepancy of about 1000 gpm has existed between the full-flow recorded 190, 105 and ROL flows. While past operating practices have not used the 190 or ROL flow rates for official purposes, the disquieting, though not theoretically unexplicable, differences require some quantitative resolution. On November 24, 1962, a drawdown test of the 190-H storage tanks was performed to establish the accuracy of the various flowmeters. The drawdown test of the 190 storage tanks was run at the beginning … more

Analytical Chemistry of the Polyphosphates

Description: Additional data were obtained on the separation of linear polymers from cyclic polymers by precipitation with barium chloride. An unexpected peak was observed in the anion-exchange chromatography of a sodium poly-phosphate of n-bar average degree of polymerization) = 6, and the compound represented by this peak was isolated. An end-group titration of this compound by microtechnique proved unequivocally that it is a cyclic phosphate. Although the identification (number of phosphorus atoms per mo… more

An Annotated Bibliography on the Effects of Radiation on Heterogeneously Catalyzed Reactions and on Chemisorption

Description: The 264 references were compiled primarily from a search of Chemical Abstracts, Nuclear Science Abstracts, and Dissertation Abstracts through December 1962. The annotations give the type of radiation, the catalysts investigated, and the test reactions used. The entries are cross-referenced, and indexes of the authors, catalysts, reactions, and type of radiation are provided. The compliation is limited to papers in which either heterogeneously catalyzed reactions, chemisorption, or the radiolysi… more

Characteristics of Fuel Compounds and Encapsulation Materials in Radioisotope Heat Sources

Description: The properties of radioisotope fuel compounds and fuel capsule materials which are pertinent to the design and operation of radioisotope heat sources are outlined. These properties are grouped into the following categories: intrinsic, extrinsic, and compatibility. The properties of strontium titanate as the fuel and Hastelloy C as the capsule material are evaluated. (D.L.C.)

CLOSE-CAPTURE ABSORPTION SYSTEM FOR REMOTE RADIOISOTOPE CHEMISTRY

Description: Molecular sieves are used as the basic adsorber in a close-capture air recirculation system designed primarily for remote operation with master-siave equipment. A compact evaporator-dissolver unit provides a vessel for dissolution of an Al slug containing the radioactive material and provides an evaporator head under which volume reduction may be carried out within a specially prepared centrifuge cone. One movable condenser serves both operations. Resistance films of Pt provide heat for the cen… more

Close-Capture Adsorption System For Remote Radioisotope Chemistry

Description: Molecular sieves are synthetic zeolites which, when dehydrated, contain a network of empty pores and cavities that constitute almost 50% of the total volume of the crystals. They have the unique property of adsorbing within these cavities only those molecules that are small enough to pass through the pores of the crystals, Molecular sieves have a very strong affinity for water and other polar molecules. It is this selective property plus their stability and reasonable cost that make them of int… more

Collapse of tubes by external pressure

Description: The problem of tube collapse by external pressure has been investigated experimentally. A graphical solution developed to simplify inelastic collapse design problems was shown to agree with the test results. The von Karman reduced modulus was used in the graphical solution to correct for the stress redistribution caused by yielding. The effects of the geometric imperfections of ovality and wall thickness variations on collapse pressure were shown to be related to the stress-strain behavior of t… more

Comparison of Radiation-Induced Graft Copolymerization Untilizing Electron Accelerators and Isotope Sources as Radiation Initiators

Description: "A brief examination of the post irradiation grafting of machine irradiated polyethylene film with acrylic acid monomer was made. Evidence of postgrafting was detected in samples that had been irradiated to a total dose of 10 Mrads at a dose rate of 0.01 Mrad/sec. and then exposed to a 25% purified acrylic acid solution in benzene for periods of 1 to 4 days."
