Natural Convection Flow Inside Small Tubes

Description: Summary: "An analysis is made of the heat transferred by natural convection flow inside a small vertical tube with internal heat generation. The reduction in temperature is found to be small."

Natural convection inside a flat rotating container

Description: Report presenting an exploration of Froude number, which is found to be the parameter that determines the effect of body rotations on internal natural convection flows. Explicit forms of Froude number are determined for the cases of predominant rotation and predominant axial force. Results indicated that in a heated cylindrical container no significant convective effects are generated by rotations alone.

Natural Gas Manual for the Home

Description: Report issued by the Bureau of Mines discussing a manual written for individuals who use natural gas in the home. As stated in the introduction, "its purpose is to tell about the supply, production, and distribution of natural gas, so that the necessity for preventing waste will be better understood" (p. 1). This report includes a map, illustrations, and photographs.

Natural Icing of an Axial-Flow Turbojet Engine in Flight for a Single Icing Condition

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation in natural icing conditions to determine the effect of ice formations on the performance of an axial-flow turbojet engine. A description of the change over time in tail-pipe temperature, engine jet thrust, fuel flow, ice collection, and acceleration qualities are provided.

Natural Thermal Stratification in Tanks : Phase 1 Final Report

Description: This report describes how solar system tanks fail to stratify, a new solar system control strategy that allows stratification, a one-dimensional analytical model of thermally stratified tanks, experimental measurement of thermal stratification in tanks, correlation of experimental measurements with empirical constants in the analytical model, and a procedure for designing thermally stratified tanks. Failure to stratify is explained in terms of the critical Richardson number. The key to the new … more

The Nature of Air Flow About the Tail of an Airplane in a Spin

Description: "Air flow about the fuselage and empennage during a high-angle-of-attack spin was made visible in flight by means of titanium-tetrachloride smoke and was photographed with a motion-picture camera. The angular relation of the direction of the smoke streamer to the airplane axes was computed and compared with the angular direction of the motion in space derived from instrument measurement of the spin of the airplane for a nearly identical mass distribution. The results showed that the fin and upp… more

Nature of Bond and Diole Moment of the LiH Molecule

Description: A description of the character of the bond as a superposition of homopolar and ionic bonding is a very useful approximation in quantum-mechanical research on the properties of molecules. In the LiH molecule, it may be assumed with sufficient accuracy that the bond is formed by two electrons, since, besides the outer electrons composing the bond, there is only a closed layer of inner electrons in the lithium atom.

The Nature of the Axioms of Relativistic Quantum Field Theory

Description: "The formulation of field theories by means of Wightman functions is studied. It is shown that, given two field theories that satisfy all the axioms, one can construct a family of Wightmsn fields with the same properties by a process of superposition of Wightman functions. The condition of unitarity is formulated without reference to asymptotic conditions, and it is proved that the Wightman fields constructed by the superposition process (starting with "unitary" fields) fail to preserve unitari… more

The Nature of the Hydrogen Bond in the Bifluoride Ion

Description: We undertook the present diffraction study of the bifluoride ion in sodium acid fluoride and the present refinement of the earlier data on potassium acid fluoride with the hope of obtaining more accurate information not only on the position of the hydrogen atom, but also on the vibrations of the ion. We felt that it would be through the combination of information on the motions of the system from diffraction and spectroscopic studies that the question of the symmetry of the ion could be settled… more

The Navier-Stokes Stress Principle for Viscous Fluids

Description: "The Navier-Stokes stress principle is checked in the light of Maxwell's mechanism of friction and in connection herewith the possibility of another theorem is indicated. The Navier-Stokes stress principle is in general predicated upon the conception of the plastic body. Hence the process is a purely phenomenological one, which Newton himself followed with his special theorem for one-dimensional flows" (p. 1).

The "Navigraph"

Description: "Commander Le Prieur, whose flight experience in a low-speed seaplane we related in our number of September 27, 1924, invented, four years ago, an instrument destined to render very great service to aviators, namely, the "navigraph", designed to correct errors of orientation due to the effect of the winds during flight" (p. 1).
