Acute Exposure to Polonium. (Medical Study of Three Human Cases)

Description: Three individuals were inadvertently exposed to polonium. Activity determinations on the routine weekly urine samples submitted by the individuals revealed counts of 174, 734, and 2190 c/min/50 ml respectively. An investigation was immediately launched to determine the source of the exposure, since there was no report of a spill or accident involving active material. Analysis of Effect of Rolling Pull-Outs on Wing and Aileron Loads of a Fighter Airplane

Description: An analysis was made to determine the effect of rolling pull-out maneuvers on the wing and aileron loads of a typical fighter airplane, the P-47B. The results obtained indicate that higher loads are imposed upon wings and ailerons because of the rolling pull-out maneuver, than would be obtained by application of the loading requirements to which the airplane was designed. Analysis of Experimental Investigations of the Planing Process of the Surface of Water

Description: Pressure distribution and spray measurements were carried out on rectangular flat and V-bottom planing surfaces. Lift, resistance, and center of pressure data are analyzed and it is shown how these values may be computed for the pure planing procees of a flat or V-bottom suface of arbitrary beam, load and speed, the method being illustrated with the aid of an example.

Application of the linearized theory of supersonic flow to the estimation of control-surface characteristics

Description: Report presenting the use of known conical-flow solutions of the linearized equation for the velocity potential in supersonic flow as applied to the calculation of the characteristics of control surfaces. Solutions for the pressure distributions are obtained for control surfaces with hinge lines swept ahead or behind the Mach line when the control-surface trialing edge is swept ahead of the Mach line.

Application of the Methods of Gas Dynamics to Water Flows With Free Surface 2: Flows With Momentum Discontinuities (Hydraulic Jumps)

Description: In this paper an introduction to shock polar diagrams is given which then leads into an examination of water depths in hydraulic jumps. Energy loss during these jumps is considered along with an extended look at elementary solutions of flow. An experimental test set-up is described and the results presented.
