- Calotte
- Hat of beige felt/velor. Styled as a calotte (also spelled "calot"), the hat has a domed beige felt crown "stacked" on another domed form of the same felt. The outer crown is "cut open" and "peeled back", to reveal the crown below. The lower edge of the crown is rolled up and in to create the appearance of a narrow rolled brim. The hat is unlined, with an inner dark beige grosgrain ribbon hatband. - Hat of pale purple or violet felt/velor. Styled as a calotte (also spelled "calot"), the hat has a domed pale purple felt crown "stacked" on another domed form of the same felt. The lower form has a horizontal "tuck" near the base, enhancing the impression of the hat being stacked felt domes. On right side of the crown near base is an applied bow of the same felt. The hat is unlined, with an inner dark blue grosgrain ribbon hatband. Stamped inside the crown: "Premier / Finest Quality / Imported / Velour" Joint Designer's and Retailer's label sewn to inner hatband: "Hattie Carnegie / Inc / Original / Expressly for / Neiman-Marcus". - Hat of natural-colored straw. The somewhat domed crown worked to appear "squashed", bulging in some areas and turned-in in others. At base of crown is band of cream grosgrain ribbon with bow at front. The brim is off-center, turned under, extending further at front and curving more broadly under at back. The hat is unlined, with an inner red grosgrain ribbon hatband. - Hat
- Hat of natural-colored straw. Hat is composed of two parts. The inner circular pillbox-style crown is covered in navy blue shantung. Around the pillbox is the woven straw brim, which extends downwards in a bell-shape, and also extends upwards around the pillbox, forming four flaps that overlap the top of the crown. The opening at top of the crown formed by the flaps is bordered in red piping, and two of the flaps meet at top of crown and are tied with red and blue bows. - Pillbox Hat
- Pillbox hat of straw/raffia. The crown of the pillbox is of natural-colored straw/raffia, domed and with rounded edges, having a sloping back on which there is an applied bow of matching straw/raffia. The lower edge of the crown turns under and into the crown. Hat is lined in brownish/golden satin, and has an inner woven straw/raffia hatband. Inner buckram frame/base. - Hatlet
- Hatlet of black velvet. Hatlet is formed of a shallow circular black velvet crown edged with simulated pearls. The lobed edge is encircled by a black velvet band trimmed with matching simulate pearls, forming a band of elliptical openings spaced around the rim. Where each lobe meets the band is attached a larger simulated pearl in gilt mounting. The whole is overlaid with fine black net veiling. The crown is lined in black cloth with a fine woven pattern, and is edged with black grosgrain ribbon. Maker's Label: "Bes-Ben / Made in Chicago". - Dress
- Dress of red chiffon, sequins and beading. The bodice of the dress is of draped red chiffon with deep V-neckline at front and shawl collar with deep drape at back. The long, full sleeves gather into tight cuffs, each having four red chiffon covered domed buttons and red fabric loops. At the natural waist of the dress is a horizontally ruched band which gives the effect of a sash of the same material, with simulated bow and trailing ends. The bodice simulates a wrap dress, with one side of the collar ends becoming part of the bow of the sash, and the other securing inside with a snap. The bow conceals three hook-and-eye closures and the top of the zipper closure. The short skirt is completely covered with sequins and beads. Black sequins run in horizontal and vertical bands forming a grid/trellis pattern. The vertical rectangular spaces within the grid are filled with rectangles of sequins in green, black, white and orange/red, or with tubular beads in white/iridescent, gray and yellow. There are also scattered irregular patches of orange white or green sequins on the black sequin grid. The skirt is lined in black fabric. - Hat
- Hat of light-colored straw. Domed crown is surmounted by small sphere of woven straw, and is canted back slightly. Around the base of the crown is a wide band of two layers of white grosgrain ribbon which have extending ends at side. The "snap brim" is slanted downwards at front, but turned up at sides and back. The hat is lined in a fine golden/yellow mesh, and has an inner white grosgrain ribbon hatband at base of crown. - Hatlet of brown plastic tubing. Hatlet formed of a spiral of twisted brown plastic tubing. The shallow, dished crown has four large bows of the same tubing spaced along the edges, with the "ends" pointing upwards. The hatlet has a brown net veil, with pieces of the brown tubing worked into some of the intersections. The inside of the crown is lined in brown mesh, and edged in brown velvet piping. - Pair of lady's boots or "High Button Shoes" of tan calf leather and tan cloth (canvas?). The shoes, designed with pointed toes, close along center front with laces, 19 holes high. Lower section of shoes are of tan leather, embellished with tiny holes along stitching lines and in scrolling motifs at toe-boxes. Upper parts of shoes are of heavy tan fabric, likely canvas. Styled with pointed-toes, the white kid leather upper has a vamp decorated with tiny gunmetal beads edging oval cut-outs, and with massed beading at center of each vamp. - Shoes
- Pair of shoes of white silk damask with embroidery in green, blue, and pink. Around throat and upper edge is band of green embroidered pine cones(?)and scallop band. At toe is embroidered blossom in pale pink and blue, with trailing branches in greens with leaves in greens and buds in pinks and butterflies in greens, pinks, and browns. Along sides are similar embroidered branches, leaves, buds, and blossoms. Throatline of shoe with black banding. At point of throat is applied 3-dimensional flower of silk ribbon. Inner sole of dark tan leather, insides of shoes lined with pink/beige silk(?). Soles of leather, with built-up or stacked 1 1/4" (3cm) modified louis or opera heels. Stamped inside shoes in red are various marks in Chinese(?), and maker's mark, which is mostly illegible. - Pair of lady's shoes of black silk. The shoes, designed as modified D'Orsay pumps with pointed toes, are of black silk with cut-away areas at sides. Toe-box with opening at vamp and "T"-strap extending from vamp to connect with strap across instep that extends from heel area. Instep strap secures on outer side of shoe with circular button. Tear-drop shaped cut-outs on either side near heel. Lined in black silk. Medium high heels styled as a modified boulevard or Louis heel, with rounded sides and back, flaring to base, and with very slightly curved front section. - Pair of lady's boots or "High Button Shoes" of light blue leather and yellow suede. The lower section of the shoes, designed with pointed toes, are of pale blue polished leather. - Panama hat of natural straw. The tan straw crown is domed, with wide band of red, white, and blue grosgrain ribbon around base. - Folding fan of bone and satin. Guards and sticks of bone, intricately carved with pierced latticework. Plain off-white silk satin leaf. Chased metal bail ring at pivot with mother-of-pearl beads. Off-white silk tassel tied to bail. Inscribed on silk leaf along one guard: "Hood W. - Pillbox hat of off-white straw and dark taupe twill trim. The short, cylindrical crown is woven of wide off-white straw, edged with a wide band of twill ribbon of dark taupe. - Pillbox Hat
- Pillbox hat of beaded straw. The modified pillbox hat has a cylindrical crown of white straw embellished with tiny white beads sewn on in an all-over foliate design. Within the crown is an inner woven structure which extends slightly below the edge of the crown, having the effect of raising the hat slightly off of the head and giving space around it. The inner structure has an inner hatband of red grosgrain ribbon, and a white felt-covered wired structure to help secure the hat to the wearer's head. - Hat of white straw with red velvet and net trim. The domed crown of the hat is formed of three sections of white straw, two hemispheres overlapping a central band running front to back. Around the base of the crown is a wide red velvet ribbon with bow and trailing ends at back. Over the ribbon and brim is a fine red netting/veiling with scattered tiny white "blossoms" affixed to the netting/veiling. The flat, narrow brim turns under at the edge to create a double-thick edge. The inside of the crown has an off-white grosgrain inner hatband. - Pair of gloves. Ivory kid leather gloves with brown and gray embroidery. Hands have inside seaming; 3 darts on top; darts highlighted by rows of gray chain-stitching with ivory dots woven in; wrists have sewn on cuffs; cuffs feature strip of pale off white leather; embellished with geometric and circle embroidery in brown thread; snap under wrist creates keyhole underneath as well. - Gloves
- Pair of ladies' gloves. The "hands" are of pale brown with white fabric, possibly a silk/cotton blend. Seamed on inside, they have 3 darts on back of each hand done with dark brown stitching. At wrist on each side is a v-shaped extension which joins to the "cuff", which is of light brown cotton with yellow tones. The scalloped edges of the "cuff" and semi-circular sections on the back of each are piped in dark brown fabric. The "cuffs" are styled as a wrap dress, with an overlap at back of wrist. The overlap has a single cylindrical button of black plastic designed to appear carved with three notches in the side revealing pale green/yellow below and at ends. Manufacturer's tag inside gloves: "Kayser, 52 * Reg / Made in Germany / 6"; Stamped in lining by tag: "Kayser 52". The gloves are accompanied by the original paper care tag: "WASH / GLOVES / ON HANDS / Use almost cool / water and a pure / mild soap. We re- / commend PALM- / OLIVE BEADS. Do / not rub. The domed crown is constructed with the the outline of a rounded square, with attached stiffened double-brim, which turns up on all sides, forming a point at front and at sides, but rounded in back. At the back of the hat the brim extends downwards, forming a point. The hat is unlined, and edged with a black grosgrain ribbon inner hatband. A small stitched star on the hatband indicates the front of the hat. Visible behind the ribbon in one section is the woven straw backing used to stiffen the brim. - Embroidered hatlet. Formed of two hollow teardrop shapes overlaid on each other and edged with tiny gold beads. The shapes are covered in light green satin with is heavily embroidered with flowers and leaves in red, blue, greens, yellow, brown, purple/lavender. At back of hat is a sculptural bow of the same materials, edged in gold beads and with a quadruple strand of the beads at the "knot". Overall is a brown net veil with attached embroidered pieces matching the embroidery on the hatlet. At the front of the hat are four pairs of large plastic pearlized buttons with clear crystal beads between affixed to the pointed sections with ties of navy blue plastic tubing. Over the hat is a navy blue veil to which is attached scattered groups of pieces of navy blue plastic tubing. - Hatlet of orange beaded mesh. The openwork triangular hatlet is formed of stiffened strips of mesh covered in large and small orange beads, edged with double-rows of small orange beads. At each corner of the triangle are large similarly beaded and edged butterfly-shapes. Fine black veil. Underside of hatlet is of stiff mesh edged with narrow bands of velvet. Two strips of red felt arc up and over at the back of the hat, with a third piece running across from under at back center to near the front. These pieces form a "bow" shape, all edged in red glass beads. Over all is a red net veil with scattered matching red glass beads. The hat is lined in net and edged underneath in red grosgrain ribbon with two small plastic combs attached to secure hat to wearer's head. - Hat of brown lace and beads. The beret-style hat is formed as a low crown of brown lace decorated with bronze-colored beads in loops and strings. The hat is lined in white net, and has an inner hatband of dark brown grosgrain ribbon. A stitched "star" on the inner hatband indicates the front of the hat, and two attached small plastic combs help secure the hat to wearer's head. - Hatlet
- Hatlet of navy straw. Low domed woven navy blue straw crown has triangular "wings" of the same material at sides which arc upwards and then down, giving a resemblance to a manta ray. The whole is edged with 1/4" spherical white glass(?) beads. Overlaid on the hatlet is a veil of navy mesh with 9 pairs of the white beads affixed at various parts of the veil. The undersides of the wings are lined in white material. The crown of the hat is lined with blue mesh, and there is an inner hatband of dark blue grosgrain ribbon along the inner bottom edge of the crown. Designer's label affixed to inner hatband: "Bes-Ben / Made In Chicago". - Pillbox Hat
- Pillbox hat of blue mesh and straw work. The cylindrical blue mesh crown is very slightly domed, with an extending section at front which folds down and under. The whole is covered with a field of 1" (2.54 cm) wide blue straw work flower heads. The inside of the crown is lined in a fine blue mesh and edged with an inner hatband of dark blue grosgrain ribbon. Attached to the ribbon are two small plastic combs to secure hat to wearer's head. - Hatlet of red beads. Crown of the hatlet is composed of an irregular skullcap of stiffened red mesh covered with red beads. Set atop the the hatlet are three large e-dimentional "bow" shapes composed of the red beads. The hatlet has a red net veil. - Pillbox Hat
- Pillbox hat of black plastic tubing. The slightly domed openwork top of the crown is formed of a coil of black plastic tubing framed in a border of black plastic tubing forming a 7-pointed star. The cylindrical sides of the hat slope gently outwards, and have a shallow lobed or scalloped effect at the edge, with a series of openwork crescent shapes around the base of the crown. The crown is lined in black mesh and edged with a thin band of black plush. There are two plastic combs - one to each side - to help secure hat to wearer's head. - Pillbox hat of white straw. The slightly domed crown is of made of white (artificial?) straw, a tight narrow weave under a layer of wide, looser bands which weave in and out of the tightly woven section. - Pillbox Hat
- Hat of white straw cloth and navy blue felt. The modified pillbox style hat has a slightly conical crown with rounded top of white straw cloth. The lower section of the crown is edged with a wide dark navy blue velvet band. At one side of crown is an applied ornament resembling a snail, consisting of a tightly coiled spiral of white cording that extends up and out, branching into two parts. Near the branching are two rhinestone set spheres, one on each branch. Inside of crown is lined in white fabric, and edged with an inner dark navy blue grosgrain ribbon hatband. Attached to band are two small plastic combs to secure the hat to the wearer's head. - Hatlet of black velvet with beads and cut-steel butterflies. Black velvet hatlet, the slightly domed openwork crown formed by three "teardrop" shapes of black velvet edged with black beads, connected at the points, and connected at bottom edges with short curved black velvet "bridges" also edged with black beads. In each of the teardrop sections is set a large black stamped metal "cut steel" style butterfly. Evidence of black net veil, now missing. Interior of crown lined with black felt, and with two plastic combs to secure hatlet to wearer's head. Designer's label: "Bes-Ben / Made in Chicago". - Hat
- Hat of straw. Natural-color straw hat in the style of a modified boater. Shallow domed crown is encircled by a black velvet ribbon with rhinestone set buckle at front securing bow with large loops. Around the front 2/3 of the hat is black veiling/net. The short brim is slightly off-center, extending farther at front than back. The underside of the brim is partly lined in black velvet, while the crown has an inner brown grosgrain hatband. No designer's labels or retailer's labels. - Cloche hat of fine light brown/tan straw. The domed crown of straw has a looped segment of woven straw "ribbon" attached at side, with trailing ends. The irregular brim, woven in one piece with crown, has an asymmetrical crease at side. The hat is unlined, with an inner hatband of off-white grosgrain ribbon.
