The surface of the hat is composed of bands of various materials and ornamentation, including narrow border bands of woven golden straw, bands of off-white chiffon which are sewn through to create rows of diagonal "puffs", similar bands of narrow threading, and a wide band of brown silk. The top of the crown is formed of a diamond shape of the brown silk bordered with the narrow threaded diagonal bands. Around top and base of crown are running bands of black braid forming a series of loops, within each of which is a free-swinging black braid-covered ball.
