- Calotte
- Hat of black velvet and beading. The hat is styled as a calotte (also spelled "calot") of black velvet, with an irregular lower edge. Set around the calotte are 5 large tear-drop shaped rhinestones, 4 at front and 1 at back. Each stone is bordered by concentric bands of pearls, small rhinestones and gray tubular beads. The beading bands continue around the hat, linking the larger stones, and becomes the lower border of the hat. The hat is lined with black satin, and has an inner hatband of black grosgrain ribbon. A small stitched mark on the inner hatband indicates the front of the hat. Maker's label sewn to inner hatband: "Ere Nouvelle / New York / Reg. U.S. Pat. Off." - Hat
- Hat of green straw. The domed crown is of woven dark green straw, using primarily wide bands of straw but with occasional bands made of linked narrow strips threaded with thin golden ribbon. The narrow brim is of matching straw, and turns up steeply. Applied to back is a small dark green velvet bow. The hat is lined in a dark green fine mesh fabric, and has an inner hatband of green velveteen(?) ribbon around the inside lower edge of the crown. - Cloche
- Cloche hat of fine light brown/tan straw. The domed crown of straw has a looped segment of woven straw "ribbon" attached at side, with trailing ends. The irregular brim, woven in one piece with crown, has an asymmetrical crease at side. The hat is unlined, with an inner hatband of off-white grosgrain ribbon. - Bergère Hat
- Black silk organza bergère-style hat. The hat has a floppy double-layer brim, the under brim of slightly stiffer black silk organza, overlaid with upper brim of same material. The low, circular crown is encircled at the base by a folded black ribbon, which ties at back and has trailing ends. Inside base of crown is band of black grosgrain ribbon. - Cocktail Dress
- Cocktail dress. The bodice of the dress is of sheer black wool, with a Peter Pan style collar and short sleeves which are shirred at the ends. There is a narrow black satin ribbon at waist where the bodice meets the skirt. The skirt is composed of three layers. The innermost layer is of thick black chiffon, the middle layer is thin black chiffon/crepe. The outer layer is of panels of black and white printed hounds tooth/plaid chiffon, the panels arranged vertically and slit from 5" below waistline to hemline. The panels are gathered/pleated into the waistband. At the top of each slit is an applied black satin bow, forming a row of bows around the hip-line of the skirt. Each panel has side borders of black satin ribbon. The dress has a center-back zipper from neckline to below hips, with a single hook-and-eye at top of collar. There is an inner black grosgrain ribbon waistband, with hook-and-eye closure. The bodice is lined in sheer black material. - Hatlet of black plastic tubing. Formed as an open circular crown, the hatlet is composed of three sections of black tubing shaped as crescents, attached at points. Overlaid with black net veiling with sections of black tubing affixed at some intersections. Crown is lined with black mesh, and edged in black velvet. - Hatlet of navy blue appliques. The hatlet is composed of a small square or diamond shaped skullcap of dark blue mesh overlaid with dark blue braid appliques in scrolling forms decorated with french knots. Around the four sides are further triangular shaped appliques, wired along the edges, to stand up around the crown. Affixed near the lower edges of the hatlet is dark blue net veil. Hatlet is lined with blue mesh and edged with a thin band of dark navy blue velvet. At either side are small plastic combs to secure hatlet to wearer's head. The overall effect is of a child's image of a coronet. The whole is overlaid with black net veil, with triplets of black beads worked into some intersections of the net. - Hatlet of navy blue wool with embroidery and mirrors. Base of hatlet formed of an irregularly-shaped skullcap of dark navy blue wool decorated with embroidered lines, bands, etc. in red, yellow, and white. Over the surface of the fabric are small 1.5 cm. diameter mirrors in pink and red stitched borders. All edges are trimmed in gray/purple beads. Surmounting the hatlet are three bows of the same materials, and the whole is overlaid with fine dark blue veiling. - Hatlet in calot style of navy straw. The hat is formed of a circle of navy blue straw over stiffened netting, with 4 protruding points at the front of the hat and two rounded protruding lobes at back. It is edged with three rows of navy blue plastic tubing. At the front of the hat are four pairs of large plastic pearlized buttons with clear crystal beads between affixed to the pointed sections with ties of navy blue plastic tubing. Over the hat is a navy blue veil to which is attached scattered groups of pieces of navy blue plastic tubing. - Hatlet of orange beaded mesh. The openwork triangular hatlet is formed of stiffened strips of mesh covered in large and small orange beads, edged with double-rows of small orange beads. At each corner of the triangle are large similarly beaded and edged butterfly-shapes. Fine black veil. Underside of hatlet is of stiff mesh edged with narrow bands of velvet. - Red felt hatlet. Hat styled as a calotte (also spelled "calot") constructed of a red felt square with concave edges that turn downwards. Edged in red glas beads. Two strips of red felt arc up and over at the back of the hat, with a third piece running across from under at back center to near the front. These pieces form a "bow" shape, all edged in red glass beads. Over all is a red net veil with scattered matching red glass beads. The hat is lined in net and edged underneath in red grosgrain ribbon with two small plastic combs attached to secure hat to wearer's head. The back edge of the crown extends to form two semi-circular lobes. Overlaying the crown, but beneath the "bows" is black netting veil, with small pieces of black tubing worked into some of the intersections at front of hat. - Sculptural hatlet of white beads and floral plaques. The hatlet is formed of a 4 cm. wide strip of stiffened mesh that curves around the head and forms a modified figure 8, with an additional extending loop. The surface of the mesh is covered in circular plastic (?) plaques 3.5 cm. in diameter cast with a floral relief pattern. The space between the plaques and on the edges of the hatlet are covered in tiny white spherical beads. Inner side of the hatlet is lined in stiff white mesh and edged in a thin strip of off-white velvet, and has a section with a wider, larger velvet lining. Possibly a wedding headpiece. - Pillbox hat of black velvet. The cylindrical hat has a flattened crown with four clusters of 5 beaded spheres each along the top edge. The bottom edge of the crown is gently scalloped, and edged with small tubular beads. The crown is lined with black satin, and has an inner hatband of black grosgrain ribbon along the inside lower edge. Attached to the inner hatband on one side is single plastic comb (mate missing) to help secure hat to wearer's head. - Pillbox hat of off-white and pink brocade. The conical crown with flattened top is made of brocade fabric with flowers and butterflies in off-whites, gray/greens and pinks on a grayish ground. On the right side of the hat is a large bow made of strips of the brocade backed in a gray/blue. The center of the bow is encircled with a band of gray beads, with a matching band of beads at base of hat. The hat has a light tan veil. The hat is lined in gray/blue mesh and edged with an inner hatband of gray/blue grosgrain ribbon. A small plastic comb is attached at either side to secure hat to wearer's head. - Pillbox hat of yellow plastic/vinyl tubing. Top of crown formed of a coil of the tubing bent into a square or diamond shape, encircled by more coiled tubing forming a circle, leaving open areas. The sides of the crown have other open areas, and form slight scallops at lower edge. Extending through the tubing from upper edge of crown is black net veiling, with small pieces of the yellow tubing worked into some of the intersections of the veiling. Interior of crown lined with yellow mesh, cut away at openings, and edged with a thin strip of beige/yellow velvet. Two small plastic combs are attached at either side to secure hat to wearer's head. - Pillbox Hat
- Pillbox hat of knit material with embroidery and mirrors. The black fabric of the hat is covered with yellow embroidered star shapes and small circular mirrors ca. 1.5 cm. in diameter bordered by red thread embroidery/crochet. Cylindrical crown formed as slightly "crushed", folding in in some areas and bulging out in others, and with gently scalloped lower edge. Top is generally flat, with an applied tear-drop shaped section of the same material, with trailing "ribbons" of same material extending off of back of hat. The edge of the applied panel and the lower edge of the crown are edged with alternating red and black beads, with two strands and two loops of the same beading descending from the between the "ribbons" at top. The inside of the crown is lined in red mesh and edged with red grosgrain ribbon. There are two plastic combs, one at either side, to secure hat to wearer's head. - Pillbox hat of black plastic tubing. The slightly domed openwork top of the crown is formed of a coil of black plastic tubing framed in a border of black plastic tubing forming a 7-pointed star. The cylindrical sides of the hat slope gently outwards, and have a shallow lobed or scalloped effect at the edge, with a series of openwork crescent shapes around the base of the crown. - Cloche hat of tan milan straw. The high crown is slightly dished, and narrows to brim, with wide band of tan/very pale green grosgrain ribbon at base with large "bow" at side. - Small picture hat of straw. The fine, natural color straw crown is domed, and encircled by a band of beige grosgrain ribbon at its base. The ribbon has a bow at the front. The wide, oval brim is set off-center to the crown, and is edged with the same beige grosgrain ribbon. The brim has two "V" cuts into it at front, forming projecting "saw teeth". At the base of each "V" cut, on top and underneath brim, is a bow of the same grosgrain ribbon. The hat is unlined, and there is an inner hatband of beige grosgrain ribbon. - Small straw picture hat. Low domed crown of a dark/purple woven straw. Wide, down-turned brim of same material starts high on the crown, and is edged in black velvet. At the back of the hat, starting at top of brim, is an applied spray of artificial daisies and leaves in green fabric, with black velvet bow. Unlined. - Small picture hat of black straw. The domed black straw crown is edged in black velvet ribbon and is surmounted by a "starburst" of pleated black grosgrain fabric with a vertically projecting "tab" of grosgrain ribbon backed with black velvet. The matching straw brim is circular along the front 2/3 of the hat, and then "cut back" along the back 1/2, forming two slight corners at sides. The brim is edged in black velvet ribbon. The crown has an inner black grosgrain ribbon hatband. Label sewn to inner hatband: "Henrys / Dallas". Henrys has been identified alternately as maker or retailer. - Hat of golden cloth. The pillbox style hat is formed as a low, cylindrical crown of stiffened mesh with flattened top, covered with with a woven golden cloth, pleated horizontally on sides. The top of the crown is embellished with beading, using simulated pearls, small bronze-colored beads, large oval cabochon opalescent translucent beads, faceted "crystal" beads, and crescent-shaped translucent beads. The hat is unlined, the inner mesh visible and showing embroidered pattern of pale green leaves/branches. Around inside lower edge of crown is an inner hatband of green grosgrain ribbon. - Turban of light brown velvet and burnt sienna / orange brown satin. Affixed to front is a large artificial flower in shades of pinks and pale greens, enhanced with maroon feathers. The crown is covered in black sequins, with an edge of the velour showing slightly at front and back, more at right side. The hat is unlined, with inner hatband of brown grosgrain ribbon inside base of crown. A small stitch in the inner hatband indicates the front of the hat. - Hatlet of blue gray feathers. The crown is formed as a partly curved bird's wing, enclosed at back and arcing across the head from ear to ear. The back part of the hat is of fine feathers, closely set, while the front of the hat is made of long feathers set parallel, pointing towards the front of the hat. The under-structure is wired to retain its shape, and the crown is edged with a blue gray grosgrain ribbon and lined with blue fabric. At front of hat is a pale blue gray netting veil with scattered crystals. A black elastic cord is attached to the inner sides of the hat to help secure it to the wearer's head. - Hat of gray fur felt. The low, rounded crown is made of gray beaver(?) fur felt over a structure of woven straw. Brim is of same felt, and appears narrow in front, but rolls under and extends back under crown. At sides and back, brim curves upwards, and then back downwards to extend under crown. Along sides and back of crown is section of gray grosgrain ribbon which projects through the upturned brim at back and becomes a large bow with trailing ends. There is an inner hatband of gray grosgrain ribbon around the edges of the brim where they meet the inside base of the crown. Attached to the inner hatband is an elasticized cord to secure hat to wearer's head, and attached to the front brim underside is a plastic comb to secure hat to wearer's head. - Hat of white straw cloth and navy blue felt. The modified pillbox style hat has a slightly conical crown with rounded top of white straw cloth. The lower section of the crown is edged with a wide dark navy blue velvet band. At one side of crown is an applied ornament resembling a snail, consisting of a tightly coiled spiral of white cording that extends up and out, branching into two parts. Near the branching are two rhinestone set spheres, one on each branch. Inside of crown is lined in white fabric, and edged with an inner dark navy blue grosgrain ribbon hatband. - Pair of metallic leather pumps. Shoes of textured pink or rose metallic hue with silver undertones, edged in black velvet on vamp and around peep-toe. - Hat of natural-colored straw. Hat is composed of two parts. The inner circular pillbox-style crown is covered in navy blue shantung. Around the pillbox is the woven straw brim, which extends downwards in a bell-shape, and also extends upwards around the pillbox, forming four flaps that overlap the top of the crown. The opening at top of the crown formed by the flaps is bordered in red piping, and two of the flaps meet at top of crown and are tied with red and blue bows. - Hat of red straw. The hat has a high crown of finely woven red straw, with flattened top. The sides of the crown have diagonal ridges forming a "zig-zag" around the crown. At it's base, the crown curves in and under, forming a "waist" around which is tied a band of ribbed knit(?) fabric, with bow at back. The shallow brim curves downwards. From the band around crown extends a gray/black veil which extends from slightly over 1/2 of the circumference of the hat. The hat is lined in red fabric, and has an inner hatband of red grosgrain ribbon around the inside base of the crown. Maker's label sewn to inner hatband: "Otto Lucas / Bond Street London / Made in England". - Monastic Dress of red and black floral printed cotton. The dress is street-length, with natural shoulders, long sleeves and a high scoop neckline. At the waist is a black leather belt which passes through the garment at the sides, allowing the sides of the dress to be loose and flowing. The belt has a snap closure, and is designed to look "tied" at front. Also referred to as a Trapeze dress. Dress has two labels sewn inside at back of collar. - Turban of gathered white net with small white flowers. Conical crown of stiff netting completely surrounded by gathered tulle net forming a dense "cloud", into which are placed tiny artificial white fabric daisies on small stems. - Hat of natural-colored straw. The somewhat domed crown worked to appear "squashed", bulging in some areas and turned-in in others. At base of crown is band of cream grosgrain ribbon with bow at front. The brim is off-center, turned under, extending further at front and curving more broadly under at back. - Cocktail Dress
- Cocktail dress of black wool jersey knit. The late-day dress is of mid-length, with boat/scoop neckline and short sleeves. The fitted torso has a natural waistline, and fitted hip-level yoke. From the waistline through the length of the yoke the skirt widens into a pleated/gathered black tissue faille flounce that extends down to the hem. Around the waist is an attached wide faille sash which ties in front forming a bow with trailing ribbons. The bodice of the dress is lined in black, and the skirt has a heavy fabric underskirt and two attached layers of net crinolines. - Dress of oyster white linen. The daytime dress is designed as a "Sailor Dress", with a straight silhouette and short sleeves. It has a blue "sailor collar" trimmed with two bands of white linen. The sleeves are likewise edged in a wide blue band with two white linen stripes. There is a red silk faille tie. The street-length skirt has two patch pockets at front. Zipper closure at left side. The dress is unlined, and has inner waistband of oyster grosgrain ribbon with hook-and-eye closure. Designer's label sewn inside skirt at left side: "Traina-Norell / New York". - Hat of red straw. The low, flat-top crown slopes to base, swelling out to form a very narrow brim. The body of the hat is of a loose woven red straw overlaid with strips of woven red straw radiating from the top center of the crown. At the front of the hat is a dark red velvet bow. The interior of the hat is unlined, but the strips of straw continue under the brim, forming a self-lining. Around inside of crown at base is an inner hatband of dark red grosgrain ribbon. Attached to the inner hatband is a black elasticized cord to secure hat to wearer's head. Beneath brim towards back extend small red velvet covered metal(?) loops to help secure hat to wearer's head. - Petti-Hoop
- Petti-hoop of steel hoops within a white cotton petticoat. A modified form of cage crinoline consisting of three graduated steel hoops that open with snaps that fit within horizontal pockets of the full-length petticoat. Petticoat has gathered waist and eyelet lace at hem. Maker's label sewn in: "Petti-hoop / Created by / Ru-Nell / Pat Pend #494517" Size label, "10". The Ru-Nell Manufacturing Co. was founded by Fred Poole in 1935 in Yorkville, Georgia, USA. The company was named after his wife Ruby, and his oldest daughter Nell. Originally producing chenille bedspreads, they began to manufacturing "Petti-hoops" after their daughter Dorothy was unable to find a petticoat/hoop set to wear for a Southern Bell Ball in the 1950's. - Pillbox Hat
- Pillbox hat of straw/raffia. The crown of the pillbox is of natural-colored straw/raffia, domed and with rounded edges, having a sloping back on which there is an applied bow of matching straw/raffia. The lower edge of the crown turns under and into the crown. Hat is lined in brownish/golden satin, and has an inner woven straw/raffia hatband. Inner buckram frame/base. - Hat of natural colored braided straw. The hat is formed of a flat oval of braided straw, turned up at back, trimmed with a small bouquet of red and blue silk flowers. At the back of the hat, on the segment that is turned up, is applied a black velvet ribbon bow. Extending to either side from the center, beneath the flowers, are black velvet ribbons to tie the hat under the wearer's chin.
