Picture Hat
Picture hat of straw. The domed crown is of natural-colored straw, ringed at the base with a line of artificial daisies with white petals and yellow centers, affixed to a band of off-white grosgrain ribbon. The broad oval straw brim is set off-center, and edged underneath with a double line of daisies around most of the brim, and a single line of daisies at back. The crown is edged inside with an inner hatband of white grosgrain ribbon. Label sewn to inner hatband: "Henrys / Dallas". Hatlet
Hatlet of navy blue and white. The crown of the hat is formed of two hollow teardrop shapes, set with points overlapping, of a coarse navy blue fabric edged in dark blue plastic or vinyl piping. Extending from the point of each teardrop is a partly unrolled cone of the same material with an inner white/cream lining. Extending from the open end of each cone are single segments of the piping. The hatlet is overlaid with blue netting/veiling with a wide mesh and with scattered pairs of blue and white beads affixed to intersections of the mesh. The underside of the hatlet is lined in blue grosgrain ribbon, and has two small elastic cords holding two small plastic combs to secure the hatlet to the wearer's head. Toque
Toque of off-white artificial straw. The toque, formed as a low cap, has a flattened circular crown of artificial(?) off-white woven straw, which is divided into 4 unequal segments by two bands of crossing yellow velvet ribbon. At the front, where the bands of ribbon turn under to the brim are affixed two sprays of artificial flowers. The base of the crown bends under and out and back in to form a tiny brim. The hat is unlined, with an inner hatband of off-white grosgrain ribbon around inside base of crown. Inside the hat, one at either side, are triangular wire pieces covered in matching yellow velvet ribbon to help secure the hat to wearer's head. Affixed to the inner hatband is a black elastic cord to help secure the hat to wearer's head. Sewn inside crown is maker's label: "Marion Vallé / New York". Small picture hat of black straw. The domed black straw crown is edged in black velvet ribbon and is surmounted by a "starburst" of pleated black grosgrain fabric with a vertically projecting "tab" of grosgrain ribbon backed with black velvet. The matching straw brim is circular along the front 2/3 of the hat, and then "cut back" along the back 1/2, forming two slight corners at sides. The brim is edged in black velvet ribbon. Pillbox style hat of lacquered black straw. The cylindrical crown is slightly domed, the sides slightly convex. Embellished with a single large faceted black plastic button "jewel" attached at side. Hatlet of black plastic tubing. The low crown is made of a tight spiral of twisted black plastic tubing with four open areas near the edge. The front edge of the crown extends to form 4 points, each of which is surmounted by a "bow" of similar shiny black tubing tying together pairs of shiny black plastic ovals. The back edge of the crown extends to form two semi-circular lobes. Overlaying the crown, but beneath the "bows" is black netting veil, with small pieces of black tubing worked into some of the intersections at front of hat. Hatlet of blue embroidered appliques. The irregularly-shaped skull-cap is formed of stiffened blue mesh with a wired edge covered in dark navy blue velvet. Over the surface of the hatlet are applied navy blue embroidered appliques of coiled braid and French knots. Stray threads indicate the hat probably had an overlaying net/veil, now missing. Underneath the hat are attached two small plastic combs to secure hatlet to wearer's head. Hatlet of beaded openwork. Hatlet in calot (also spelled "calotte") style formed as an irregularly shaped openwork skullcap of stiffened mesh completely covered in small brown beads. Around the lower edge of the skullcap are protruding sections, shaped as stylized lobed leaves, covered with same brown beads and with many stiffened loops of smaller brown beads. Sculptural hatlet of white beads and floral plaques. The hatlet is formed of a 4 cm. wide strip of stiffened mesh that curves around the head and forms a modified figure 8, with an additional extending loop. The surface of the mesh is covered in circular plastic (?) plaques 3.5 cm. in diameter cast with a floral relief pattern. The space between the plaques and on the edges of the hatlet are covered in tiny white spherical beads. Inner side of the hatlet is lined in stiff white mesh and edged in a thin strip of off-white velvet, and has a section with a wider, larger velvet lining. Possibly a wedding headpiece. Hatlet of black faille and velvet. In the form of a modified fillet or bandeau that sits atop head and extends from ear to ear, the hatlet is formed of a pair of curved segments of black cotton faille with black beaded edging that cross and are "tied" with a band of black velvet, giving the effect of a black velvet bow edged in beads. Lined in black velvet, which is visible at front where edges curve upwards. Attached black elastic string in back to secure to wearer's head. Hat of pale purple or violet felt/velor. Styled as a calotte (also spelled "calot"), the hat has a domed pale purple felt crown "stacked" on another domed form of the same felt. The lower form has a horizontal "tuck" near the base, enhancing the impression of the hat being stacked felt domes. On right side of the crown near base is an applied bow of the same felt. The hat is unlined, with an inner dark blue grosgrain ribbon hatband. Stamped inside the crown: "Premier / Finest Quality / Imported / Velour" Joint Designer's and Retailer's label sewn to inner hatband: "Hattie Carnegie / Inc / Original / Expressly for / Neiman-Marcus". Retains original Neiman-Marcus paper tag. Dress
Dress of red chiffon, sequins and beading. The bodice of the dress is of draped red chiffon with deep V-neckline at front and shawl collar with deep drape at back. The long, full sleeves gather into tight cuffs, each having four red chiffon covered domed buttons and red fabric loops. At the natural waist of the dress is a horizontally ruched band which gives the effect of a sash of the same material, with simulated bow and trailing ends. The bodice simulates a wrap dress, with one side of the collar ends becoming part of the bow of the sash, and the other securing inside with a snap. The bow conceals three hook-and-eye closures and the top of the zipper closure. The short skirt is completely covered with sequins and beads. Black sequins run in horizontal and vertical bands forming a grid/trellis pattern. The vertical rectangular spaces within the grid are filled with rectangles of sequins in green, black, white and orange/red, or with tubular beads in white/iridescent, gray and yellow. There are also scattered irregular patches of orange white or green sequins on the black sequin grid. The skirt is lined in black fabric.
