Afternoon Dress
Afternoon ensemble of heavy black silk faille and lace. A) Bodice. Fitted; 3/4 length sleeves are split to show ice blue faille insets covered in black lace and are piped and scalloped with black embroidery and braid medallions. The lace on the sleeve insets extends from the elbow to the wrist with gathers in the lace at the back of the wrist. High standing collars with the front of the collar covered in matching blue faille covered in black lace; collar has hook & eye closure. Center front opening of 16 self-covered buttons and barred buttonholes. Center front opening is scalloped and piped to match sleeves and is trimmed with matching embroidered medallions. Boned with white moire silk grosgrain petersham which secures with two hook & eyes. Center back of petersham has three irregular pentagonal shaped tabs of black faille with barred buttonholes for securing bodice to skirt. B) Skirt. Full skirt is asymmetrical with blue faille panels inserted at front right side of skirt and two narrow inserts on left side. Left side inserts are partly covered by black faille pleating which forms folds at the left side waist. Front inserted panel is covered in black lace in floral motifs with diagonal striping. Hemline of front inserted panel is scalloped and piped in black faille with matching black embroidered medallions. Right side of skirt has an inserted panel of matching black faille that is piped and scalloped to match the bodice and is trimmed with matching embroidered medallions. Underskirt of black faille has a box pleated ruffle of self around the hemline. Center back hook & eye closure with three mother-of-pearl button on black grosgrain waistband for securing skirt to bodice. All blue insert faille panels have faded to white.

A body of water is crossed with a bridge and buildings in the background are reflected in the water. Small brushstrokes of many colors are juxtaposed in an impressionistic manner.

Handbag for afternoon or evening use. Frame of simulated tortoiseshell, carved and with openwork, with ball/snap closure and chain. Body of bag is of beige fabric with multi-colored petit-point embroidery of a bouquet of flowers. Floral motif on bag in grey, greens, blues, pinks and rose. Lined in rose ribbed silk, and contains a change purse and mirror. French or English in origin.

Ten black silk jacquard covered buttons. Lined in black silk. Retailer's label at center back neckline: "Sanger Bros. / Dallas / Waco" Matching trousers of red wool with black trim on sides seams. Closure of black covered buttons at sides of waistband. Cotton interior waistband with buttonholes for securing shirt to trousers. Stamp on back left waistband (mostly illegible). Accompanying shirt of red silk front panel with ivory damask cotton back panel. Sleeveless. Shirt has ruffles down center front placket with 3 circular white decorative buttons. Pointed collar. Center back opening with 3 circular, white buttons and tailored buttonholes. Shirt has 7 additional buttons around hem which attach to trousers. Front panel lined in matching ivory damask cotton.
Cape
Cape of black crepe chiffon with black lace insets in a floral motif. Crescent opening and back hem is trimmed in a 1 inch gently ruffled black chiffon. Back hemline is a soft zigzag. Large, round collar of matching chiffon with insets is trimmed in gathered chiffon and is accented with 3 chiffon flowers, one at the center and one at each side. Collar folds over to expose rows of gathered cream chiffon. Lining of cream silk with deep 8" knife pleats which peek below the hemline. The out-facing edge is trimmed in a center-stitched, gathered ribbon of cream chiffon.
Cape
Burnoose-style cape of lavender wool flannel. Mid-skirt length front and back, rounded at bottom to be shorter on each side. Fitted at shoulders. Attached hood gathered around face by use of ribbon ties woven through satin bound buttonholes around border of hood (ribbon missing). Center front opening and hem are trimmed with wide band of pastel green cording in scroll design. Closure of matching satin ribbon ties at neckline. Lined in pastel green satin.

Change purse of tortoise shell with mother-of-pearl inlay. Oval shape; palm-size. Brass frame; hinged opening. Teal silk lining; four inner pockets, one with slide closure. In alligator box. Frame of interior closed pocket stamped "Revlie / S. G. O. C." (difficult to read). Measurements: 8.5 cm x 5.5 cm

Chatelaine of simulated tortoiseshell. Pendant trimmed in anchor, heart and cross design with hanging chains and diamond-shaped center from which hangs two bell-shaped dangles and center hook. Hinged brass hook for attaching to waistband.

Chemise of white cotton. Below-knee length. Wide rounded neckline edged with bobbin lace. Very short sleeves edged with same lace. Upper part of neckline and sleeves with white bands embroidered with white floral motifs and ribbons, alternating with bands of inset lace. No labels in garment.

Child's dress of taupe cotton/silk trimmed in turquoise silk. Flair silhouette with dropped, pleated waist having hip belt effect, and pleats at hem and down center front. Ensemble of green and blue plaid cotton with collar and buttons of navy blue velvet. Ensemble consists of: A) Bodice. Waist is fitted with fastening of nine velvet covered buttons and tailored buttonholes, snap at neckline and two hook&eyes at hem. High stand-up collar of velvet. Long sleeves gathered with feather stitching; 6" fitted cuffs. Lined in brown polished cotton. B) Skirt. Full length; gathered on 1" waistband of black cotton with closure of two hook & eyes. Back panel for bustle has waistband of brown polished cotton and ties. One slit pocket at right side seam. 24" waist. Unlined.

Folding fan. Guards and sticks of lightly carved ivory (bone?) with scrolling foliate designs. The leaf is of white lace. Sticks are unadorned on the reverse. No visible labels, marks or signatures. Fan has alternately been identified as Irish lace or machine-made lace, and dated 1830's or 1880-1899.

The white sheer doubled organdy leaf is hand-painted with central vignette of a garden scene of a couple greeting a woman seated on a bench. The leaf with added hand-panted border of a garland of flowers. Reverse is unadorned. No visible labels, marks or signatures.

Hat of green felt in the style of a tricorne or cocked hat. Trimmed with green silk roses, brown feathers, a brass buckle on right side and bow on back. Lined in black with central "drawstring".
