The Charge

Description: The vertically oriented postcard depicts in a monochromatic palette some soldiers fighting with one down, partially seen. There is some Japanese script in the upper portion in a heavy black font.

Chûjô-hime

Description: A roundel in the center features a woman in a highly patterned kimono holding two pieces of a vegetable. A lotus blossom is featured on the roundel. In the uppermost portion of the piece is a rectangular inset with Japanese text and double row of cloud formations. A large leaf extends below and from underneath the roundel on the lower right side. A narrow band on the right side of the artwork graduates from yellow to blue and also includes Japanese text.

Haiku Poem by Buson (1716-1783)

Description: The poem is written in white text on the top and left edges of the postcard. The top two-thirds of the vertically oriented postcard contains a depiction of a standing rat wearing a robe and holding a sword under his arm.

Haiku Poem by Issa (1763-1827)

Description: The top half of the postcard contains a depiction of a person on their knees with a wide-eyed expression and shoes on their hands. The poem is written along the bottom edge of the picture and the right edge of the postcard. The bottom half is empty.

Iga Province

Description: A woman in a heavy striped cloak and a blue scarf looks over her left shoulder. Behind her is a landscape with several people toting parcels and bundles. In the background there is a cityscape silhouette and two people at the left edge of the print. Japanese text is in the insets in the upper right portion of the print.
