An Evaluation of the Federal Government's Implementation of the Government Information Locator Service (GILS): Final Report: This document reports the results of the evaluation study commissioned in response to the Government Information Locator Service (GILS) Board's request for an assessment of GILS. The study began in September 1996, data collection ended in March 1997, and the final report was completed in June 1997. The goal of the study was to understand how: GILS serves various user groups, GILS improves public access to government information, agencies are progressing with their implementations, and GILS works as a tool for information resources management.

Examining Scientific Literacy through New Media: Article evaluates the impact of new media on scientific literacy. Content analysis with a coding scheme was performed on 42 filtered websites and 20 microblogs to analyze the role of new media in disseminating scientific knowledge. The results showed that the quality of science-oriented websites was higher than that of microblogs. Suggestions about how to improve the quality of science-oriented new media and how to develop students’ scientific literacy through new media are also discussed.
Excrescent vowels in Lamkang prefix sequences: Article examines the nature of the super-short vowel-like segments between the C- prefixes of the Lamkang language by combining acoustic analysis with speakers' intuitions about syllable structure. The authors argue that an accurate phonetic description of Lamkang vowels must include these super-short vowels, as well as long and short vowels, which are phonemically distinct.

Exploration of Accuracy, Completeness and Consistency in Metadata for Physical Objects in Museum Collections: Conference paper for an exploratory study that examined student-created metadata for physical non-text resources. The authors applied in-depth qualitative and quantitative content analysis to the Dublin Core (DCTERMS) metadata created by the graduate students in two sections of an introductory digital library metadata course. Finding of comparative analysis for the asynchronous course section and the section with synchronous class meetings are also presented. Exploration of Metadata Practices in Digital Collections of Archives with Arabian Language Materials: Article for a study aimed to develop understanding of the current state of metadata practices in digital collections of archival institutions in the Arabian Gulf region. It also explored perspectives (including attitudes and possible barriers) for development of large-scale regional portals that would facilitate discovery of Arab digital archives (including language collections) by aggregating metadata. It was presented at the 2nd International Workshop on Digital Language Archives held on June 30, 2023 as part of the ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries 2023.
An exploration of text mining of narrative reports of injury incidents to assess risk: In this article, a topic model was explored using unsupervised machine learning to summarized free-text narrative reports of 77,215 injuries that occurred in coal mines in the USA between 2000 and 2015. Latent Dirichlet Allocation modeling processes identified six topics from the free-text data. The modeling success enjoyed in this exploratory effort suggests that additional topic mining of these injury text narratives is justified, especially using a broad set of covariates to explain variations in topic emphasis and for comparison of surface mining injuries with injuries occurring during site preparation for construction.

The Functional Ontology of Filmic Documents: This book chapter discusses the functional ontology of filmic documents. The authors examine a few phases of probing of filmic documents, and the relationship between structure and meaning. The authors have taken the liberty of sketching the earlier phases and of presenting the most recent in somewhat more detail. Considerations of the early phases, among other issues of document use, led to the functional ontology construction as a foundation for this probing and for wider concerns within the arena of messages, meanings, and uses.
