Structural Consideration in Designing Organotin Polyethers to Arrest the Growth of Breast Cancer Cells In Vitro

Description: The article looks at antitumor activity using a matched pair of cell lines MDA-MB-231 cells that are estrogen-independent, estrogen receptor negative and MCF-7 cells, a cell line that is estrogen receptor (ER) positive. Those polyethers that contained a O-phenyl unit were able to significantly inhibit the non-estrogen sensitive cell line but were much less effective against the estrogen sensitive cell line; that is, the human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 showed better test results for pol… more

Antiviral Activity of Metal-Containing Polymers—Organotin and Cisplatin-Like Polymers

Description: This article examines the use of metal-containing polymers as a novel class of antivirals. Polymers containing platinum and to a lesser extent tin, have repeatedly demonstrated antitumor activity in vitro and in vivo against a variety of cell and tumor types. The mechanisms responsible for the antitumor activity include inducing a delay in cell proliferation and sister chromatid exchanges blocking tumor growth.

Sustainable Science? Reducing the Carbon Impact of Scientific Mega-Meetings

Description: This article uses 9 years of annual meeting attendance data from the Ecological Society of American and the Association of American Geographers to assess the efficacy of two additional solutions: 1) alternate large national meetings that require significant air travel with smaller regional meetings that do not; and 2) incorporate geography into the meeting location selection process.

Egg Yolk Environment Differentially Influences Physiological and Morphological Development of Broiler and Layer Chicken Embryos

Description: This article investigates the effect of breed-specific yolk composition on embryonic broiler and layer chicken phenotypes, using an ex ovo, xenobiotic technique that allows the transfer of broiler and layer chicken embryos from their natural yolks to novel yolk environments.
