Description: This article discusses enthalpy of solvation correlations for gaseous solutes dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide and propylene carbonate based on the Abraham model. Abstract: Data have been assembled from the published literature on the enthalpies of solvation for more than 100 compounds in dimethyl sulfoxide and propylene carbonate. It is shown that an Abraham solvation equation with five descriptors can be used to correlate the experimental solvation enthalpies to within standard deviations of 2.80 and 2.61 kJ/mol for dimethyl sulfoxide and propylene carbonate, respectively. The derived correlations provide very accurate mathematical descriptions of the measured enthalpy of solvation data at 298 K, which in the case of dimethyl sulfoxide span a range of about 92 kJ/mol. Division of the experimental values into a training set and a test set shows that there is no bias in predictions, and that the predictive capability of the correlations is better than 3.6 kJ/mol.

Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem for Event-Dominated Processes

Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem for Event-Dominated Processes

Description: This article discusses fluctuation-dissipation theorem for event-dominated processes. Abstract: We study a system whose dynamics are driven by non-Poisson, renewal, and nonergodic events. We show that external perturbations influencing the times at which these events occur violate the standard fluctuation-dissipation prescription due to renewal aging. The fluctuation-dissipation relation of this Letter is shown to be the linear response limit of an exact expression that has been recently proposed to account for the luminescence decay in a Gibbs ensemble of semiconductor nanocrystals, with intermittent fluorescence.

A self-adaptive burst-detection algorithm

A self-adaptive burst-detection algorithm

Date: July 6, 2007
Creator: Tam, Nicoladie D.
Description: This article accompanies a poster presentation on a self-adaptive burst-detection algorithm. A self-adaptive, time-scale invariant single-unit spike train analysis technique is introduced to detect burst firings in neurons. This burst-detection method is an adaptive algorithm that uses the characteristic firing patterns statistics within and between bursts to identify the inter-burst period, intra-burst period and burst duration.
