Woodrow Wilson in the Council of Four: A Re-Evaluation

Description: It was Woodrow Wilson who played the dominant role in the Council of Four. With his dedication to the vague, often contradictory Fourteen Points, and with the power of the office of President of the United States supporting him, he determined the very nature of the treaty. Wilson's use, and misuse, of his influence over his colleagues makes him responsible for much of the final form of the Treaty of Versailles.

Chromaticism in Piano Sonata, Opus 120 by Franz Schubert

Description: Sonata in A major, Opus 120, was written by Franz Schubert in 1819. The sonata was chosen for this study because of its proximity to the middle of the span of time in which Schubert wrote his piano sonatas. His first piano sonata was written in 1815 and the last in 1828. Since no sonatas were written in either 1821 or 1822, the years in the middle of this span, the sonata written in 1819 was chosen.

Aaron Copland's Symphonic Use of Brass Instruments

Description: Traditions in orchestration can be described by relating the practices of most of the important composers of a particular time. This was done with great success by two composers of the nineteenth century, Hector Berlioz and Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, in their books on orchestration. The trumpet as used by Paul Hindemith in three instrumental groupings

Description: Paul Hindemeith adheres to the traditional concept of using two trumpets in his orchestral brass section. The trumpet parts are notated in concert pitch on the score implying the use of the "c" trumpet, although in actual practice, the parts are often transposed and played on the B-flat trumpet by the performer.

Sinfonietta

Description: Sinfonietta is a one-movement piece for full symphony orchestra. The work contains five themes, three of which are the more important. The remaining two are subordinate because they are shorter, and not as fully developed as the A themes. A diagram of the form of the piece is shown on the following page as Figure 1. Description: New York Cycle consists of the settings of three poems for bass-baritone voice and eight instruments. The poems, each of which serves as the basis for one movement, are "The East River's Charm" by Samuel Bernard Greenberg, "Brooklyn Bridge" by Vladimir Mayakovsky, and "The Skyscraper Loves Night" by Carl Sandberg.
