The Effect of Repeated Antigen Injections on the C' and C'4 Titers in Guinea Pig Serum

Description: In this study the effects of repeated antigen injections on total complement (C') and C'4 of guinea pig serum were investigated to determine if constant antigenic stimulation would show changes in the C' and C'4 titers. Attempts were also made to correlate any changes with variations in antibody titers during the repeated antigen injections.

Factors Involved in the Antibiotic Sensitivity of Staphylococcus Aureus

Description: It was the purpose of the present investigation to determine if sensitivity to other antibiotics can likewise be affected by subjecting S. aureus to heparin contact. It is of special interest in this problem to determine whether heparin in some manner affects the combining process of penicillin with the cells of several strains of S. aureus.

Studies of the Bird Life of Denton County, Texas

Description: "As a means of defining the purpose of the problem, the following objectives were considered: (1) to list the species of birds observed in Denton and neighboring counties; (2) to assign a descriptive status to each species; (3) to estimate the relative abundance of each species (4) to annotate the list with data from other sources, when additional data provide a more accurate and complete description of the status of the species in Denton County; (5) to designate the section of the county in wh… more

Pressure-Flow Relationships in the Isolated Cerebral Circulation of the Dog

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine the pressure-flow relationships in the isolated canine cerebral vascular bed. These relationships in vessels which supply an organ surrounded by bone are theoretically influenced by limiting factors which are not present in those vessels surrounded by soft tissue. An evaluation of the extent of these limitations is essential to thorough understanding of the dynamics of the cerebral vascular bed.

Some Effects of X-irradiation on the Plasma Corticosterone, Adrenal Weights, and Differential Leukocyte Count in the Rat

Description: The purpose of the present study was twofold: (1) to determine if X-irradiation can be considered a direct stress agent, and if so, to what extent it differs from other stressors; and (2) to further elucidate the role of the adrenal cortex in the radiation syndrome by determining the more immediate responses of this system to X-irradiation.

Assimilation of Organic Carbon by Aquatic Actinomycetes

Description: There were two purposes of this investigation: the first was to develop a method for studying spore germination, hyphal growth and mycelial development of the aquatic actinomycetes under the microscope so that the life cycle of this organism could be continuously followed. The second purpose was to determine the rate of carbon utilization from various types of nutritional sources, and to correlate this with the colony development and spore formation.

Some Relationships between Certain Aquatic Actinomycetes and Bacillus Cereus

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to determine if there was a metabolic relationship between the actinomycetes and the gram positive, spore-forming becilli in surface waters, and, if such a relationship was evident, to relate the association to the disappearances of typical actinomycete tastes and odors from waters.

Effects of pH and Substrate on Growth of Escherichia Coli and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa in Mixed Continuous Culture

Description: The express purpose for doing this project was to develop methods for the continuous culture of E. coli and P. aeruginosa as a mixed population, and to apply these methods in studying the effects of pH and substrate upon the growth of these two organisms in mixed continuous culture.

The Synecology of Phyco-Periphyton in Oligotrophic Lakes

Description: This study is designed to (a) demonstrate the highly productive nature of the littoral area as compared to the pelagic region, (b) the possible importance of phyco-periphyton in the diets of fish, (c) the effects of meteorological conditions on distribution of phytoplankton, and (d) a demonstration of the invalidity of using artificial substrates as a universal means of measuring productivity.

Water and Ion Eflux in Isolated Onion Roots

Description: The aims of this study were: (1) to determine simultaneously by means of a micro-potometric method the rates of water and various isotopic ion effluxes from isolated onion roots; (2) to determine and compare the effects of metabolic inhibitors on both processes simultaneously; (3) to ascertain the similarity or dissimilarity of mechanisms involved with these two processes; (4) to ascertain the role of active metabolism in each of these processes; (5) to shed light on possible gearing mechanism(… more

A Serological Study of the Antigenic Fractions of the Aerobic Actinomycetes

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to alleviate this confusion by first testing means of separating the antigenic components of the aerobic actinomycetes--obtaining, if possible, a monospecific antigen. Antisera produced from these monospecific antigens will then be tested for their possible use in the serological grouping of the aerobic actinomycetes.
