Guest Editorial: Life After Life-After-Life

Description: Abstract: This essay is a first-person account describing the profound impact of my near-death experience (NDE). I surrendered everything in response to a spiritual mandate to do something different with my new life after the NDE. Researchers may find that such intensive responses contain credible data of interest in evaluating the question of why we have NDEs.

Superjective Ontology: A Post-Cartesian Tool for the Near-Death Experience

Description: Abstract: This study questions the validity of subjective and objective categories, and suggests a new approach, which I call "superjective ontology," as a tool for resolving archaic difficulties. In the first section, I present evidence that a deeply ingrained problem of "ontological disparity" really does exist, along with the extent to which this conditions our thought patterns. I then summarize monism and dualism, and present the core thesis advancing the argument from superjective ontolo… more

Thanatoperience

Description: Abstract: Near-death experiences (NDEs) can be seen as special cases of psychological transition. They often involve a deep transformation in the sense of self. I examine the NDE as such, according to my phase theory of transition, and I analyze an NDE with the help of that theory. I conclude that the study of NDEs may provide insight into the general psychology of transition.

An Anthropological Perspective on Near-Death-Like Experiences in Three Men's Pregnancy-Related Spiritual Crises

Description: Article bringing a transpersonal perinatal anthropological perspective to the study of three fathers' near-death-like experiences (NDEs) with the "spiritual emergencies" of three New Zealand men during their partners' pregnancies. It explores the seemingly anomalous male birth/death/rebirth experiences and draws some parallels with what some Western researchers have called "the shamanic crisis," and compares their stories with the symbolic reproductive maneuvers of shaman midwives.

The Near-Death Experience: A Study of Its Validity

Description: Abstract: An Italian translation of Greyson's (1983a) NDE Scale was administered to 125 individuals who had been resuscitated at a hospital in Italy. By NDE Scale criteria 37.5 percent of those who returned the questionnaire had authentic NDEs. These data suggest some limitations to Grayson's NDE Scale and recommendations for future research.

Did Emanuel Swedenborg Have Near-Death Experiences? Envisioning a Developmental Account of NDEs

Description: Article examining the phenomenological commonalities between Emanuel Swedenborg's experiences and near-death experiences (NDEs). It argues that a distal cause of Swedenborg's experiences was neural changes induced by his lifetime of unusual respiration, in conjunction with a predisposition to temporal lobe seizures. It concludes by proposing a number of empirically testable hypotheses emerging from the arguments, centered around a developmental approach to NDEs.

Near-Death Experiences: Evidence for Survival?

Description: Abstract: "This paper argues that the out-of-body experience (OBE) and other elements of a near-death experience (NDE), as well as the positive affects that accompany them, do not yield conclusive evidence for survival after death. The OBE has features that suggest a physical basis for it, the other elements show the influence of cultural background, and positive affects may simply occur to conserve one's energy and prolong life. Other explanations for near-death elements, such as sensory dep… more

Homer's Odysseus as an Ecstatic Voyager

Description: Article examining the events of Homer's Odyssey chronologically, identifying and analyzing specific instances where Homer's imagery suggests such a multifaceted relationship. In accounting for this relationship, the article introduces a psychospiritual evolutionary theory of symbolism and inspiration based upon the higher dimensional existence of the supernatural.

The Bands of the Confederacy: An Examination of the Musical and Military Contributions of the Bands and Musicians of the Confederate States of America

Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the bands of the armies of the Confederate States of America. This study features appendices of libraries and archives collections visited in ten states and Washington D.C., and covers all known Confederate bands. Some scholars have erroneously concluded that this indicated a lack of available primary source materials that few Confederate bands served the duration of the war. The study features appendices of libraries and archives collections visited… more

Characterization of the Self-Replicating Kirsten Murine Leukemia Viral DNA: Replication and Tetracycline Resistance

Description: This research project deals with the characterization of self-replicating Kirsten murine viral DNA. The replication of this viral DNA and tetracycline resistance conferred to bacteria by this viral DNA will be studied. The restriction endonuclease and Southern blot analysis revealed a fragment of pBR322 from the Hind III and Pst I site that is located in the 3' end of the MLV-K:E molecule. Single stranded sequencing of the two terminal ends of this fragment verified that the 3' end of MLV-K:E c… more

Expression of Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor Gene in Insect Cells by a Baculovirus Vector

Description: The focus of this research is to describe the production and characterization of the human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (hGM-CSF) in insect cells, using Autographa californica buclear polyhedrosis virus (AcNPV) as an expression vector. All three forms of biological activity of hGM-CSF. Following N-glycanase treatment, the two glycosylated hGM-CSF proteins (15.5 and 16.5 KDa) which bound to Concanavalin A affinity column ran as a 14.5-15.5 KDa band on SDS-PAGE. Western blot a… more

Arthur Garfield Dove's landscape assemblages: a unique intersection of European modernism, American ideas, and nature-based abstraction

Description: In the middle of his career, Arthur Garfield Dove created a smell yet novel body of landscape assemblages. They illustrate Dove's central interest in evoking nature--its motifs and rhythms--through imaginative associations of organic and man-made materials. These works represent Dove's synthesis of contemporary European stylistic and intellectual ideas as well as American philosophies and concerns. They also reflect the influence of Alfred Stieglitz and his circle and the artist Helen Torr, Dov… more

Life Histories of Stoneflies (Plecoptera) and Other Aquatic Insects in the Rio Conejos Drainage, Colorado

Description: Stonefly life histories were studied March, 1987 through May, 1990 in the Rio Conejos, Colorado. Adult presence phenology and intensity were monitored daily in the summers of 1988 and 1989 and were coupled with monthly benthic samples to assess nymphal growth. Eggs of several species were reared. Thirty-one species were collected, with several multi-species assemblages occurring in Capnia, Utacapnia, Taenionema, Suwallia, Triznaka, Isogenoides and Isoperla. Sufficient data were obtained to reve… more
