A Qualitative Survey of the Airborne Algae, Protozoa, and Bacteria at the Denton Sewage Treatment Plant

Description: This study had a three-fold purpose. First, it was decided to determine if algae and protozoa were emitted to the air at the Denton sewage treatment plant. The information obtained could be of future importance in the fields of algal and protozoan ecology and public health. Second, it was decided to make a survey of the airborne bacteria at this plant. Some researchers have described bacterial air contamination at similar sewage treatment plants, but the one in Denton has not been studied. Thir… more

Parasites of the Cricket Frog, Acris Crepitans, of Denton County, Texas

Description: The purpose of this study was threefold. The literature concerning parasites of A. crepitans was to be brought up to date. Contributions to the general body of knowledge pertaining to the parasitic fauna of host specimens of A. crepitans and specifically those found in Denton County, Texas, were to be made. Finally, specimens found parasitizing host specimens of A. crepitans were to be preserved and classified.

A Bacteriological Survey of a Freshwater Reservoir

Description: In this study organisms that can be subcultured from lake water, using a prescribed procedure, limit, to an extent, the population, or portions of the population, that can be monitored. In essence, what is taking place is that a set of conditions is set forth and a study is made of the bacteria that will grow under these prescribed conditions.

Liver Glyoxalase Activity in Normal Mice and Mice with Lymphosarcoma

Description: It is the purpose of this investigation to determine the variation of glyoxalase activity in liver of normal mice and in the liver of mice bearing a lymphosarcoma and to compare the glyoxalase activity of the lymphosarcoma with values previously reported in the literature for other tumor types. Further, if there is indeed a variation in liver glyoxalase activity between normal and tumor-bearing mice, it will be compared to the variation in the activity of two other enzymes present in liver tiss… more

Effects of n-Decenylsuccinic Acid (n-DSA) and It's Monomethyl Ester (m-MDSA) on Water and Ion Flux in Isolated Roots

Description: The purpose of this study was (1) to measure the changes in water flux in isolated roots exposed to n-DSA and its mono-methly ester (m-MDSA) using a photometric technique in the absence of an externally applied suction and (2) to measure the flux of Na and K in similarly treated roots using a flame photometric method.

Distribution of Phosphates in a Sewage Plant and its Receiving Waters

Description: The purpose of this paper is to detail the distribution and quantity of soluble phosphates in an activated sludge plant, its discharge creek, and receiving reservoir. The resultant analyses and comparison of data should provide some better understanding of the fate of phosphorus in a Southwestern waterway system.

Quantitative Aspects of the Microflora of an Overland Flow Spray Irrigation Sewage Disposal System

Description: It was the purpose of this investigation to attempt to quantitate the microflora of the fields which receive the effluent from the Campbell Soup Plant, Paris, Texas, and to determine whether or not there is a correlation between the numbers and types of organisms present and the efficiency of purification of the system.

The Stoneflies (Plecoptera) of Oklahoma

Description: Distributional data and taxonomic keys art presented for thirty-four species of Plecoptera known to occur in Oklahoma. Ten species are new records for the state. Descriptions are provided for two species new to science, Zealeuctra cherokee and Isoperla brevis, and for the previously unknown male of Strophopteryx cucullata Frison and female of Helopicus nalatus (Frison).

Degradation of Homologous Polymerized Deoxyribonucleic Acid by Azotobacter Vinelandii ATCC 12837

Description: The purpose of this study was twofold. The first was to isolate, purify, and characterize the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of Azotobacter vinelandii ATCO 12837. The second was to determine if there was irreversible binding of homologous 32P labeled DNA to recipient A. vinelandii cells.

Effects of High Altitude Exposure on Capillary Permeability

Description: Observations of decreases in plasma volume, shifts in plasma and lymph protein concentrations, and increases in capillary permeability at high altitude have been reported in the literature by several investigators. This investigation was begun in an attempt to elucidate the possible significance of these phenomena in future space exploration, and because of the lack of knowledge concerning the underlying mechanisms. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of exposure to … more

Food Habits and Dietary Overlap of Four Species of Rodents from the Mesquite Plains of Texas

Description: The coexistence of Dipodomys ordii and Perognathus hispidus with Peromyscus maniculatus and Reithrodontomys montanus was studied in a grassland association of central Texas. The food habits of these species were compared with information from habitat vegetation analysis in an effort to determine food selectivity and the amount and importance of niche overlap and competition among these rodents.

Lactate Dehydrogenase of Hymenolepis Diminuta: Isolation and Characterization

Description: Lactate dehydrogenase was isolated in pure form from crude extract of the cestode Hymenoleois diminuta by heat treatment and column chromatography. The purified enzyme has a specific activity of 106 units per mg protein. The molecular weight of the purified protein was 75,000 as determined by Sephadex gel filtration and analytical ultracentrifugation. An equilibrium ultracentrifugation study suggests a subunit molecular weight of 39,000. From these data, a dimer form of the native enzyme is pro… more

Studies on Malic Enzyme from Hymenolepis Diminuta

Description: Malic enzyme from the rat tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta, has been purified 320-fold to a final specific activity of 29.4. The purification procedure included heat treatment, followed by column chromatography with Sephadex G-20, two phosphocellulose columns, and Sephadex G-200, respectively. The final purified enzyme appeared to be homogeneous on disc gel electrophoresis and G-200 gel filtration.

Geographic Variation in Chromosomes and Morphology of Peromyscus Maniculatus in Texas and Oklahoma

Description: This study was initiated after finding two chromosomal types of Peromyscus maniculatus north and south of the Red River in Texas and Oklahoma. The problem was to explain the chromosomal variations and their implications to the systematics of the grassland subspecies of P. maniculatus in this region.

Induction of Visible Mutations in Mormoniella by Use of Low Frequency Ultrasonic Energy

Description: Low-frequency ultrasonic energy was utilized in an attempt to induce visible mutations in the parasitoid wasp Mormoniella vitripennis. This study demonstrates that low frequency ultrasound may be used as an effective mutagenic agent in this organism, and suggests that it may have applications to other genetic systems.

Isolation and Partial Characterization of a Bacterium Which Gives Off Filtrable Cells

Description: The present study was on the isolation of a bacterium capable of producing filtrable forms which passed through the 0.45µ filter membrane and regenerated the parental form; the testing of the true filtrability of the isolate; the relationship between growth of the isolate and appearance of filtrability; partial characterization of the isolate and visualization of the elements that passed through the membrane filter with electron microscopy and shadow casting technique.

Comparative Ultrastructural Study between Young and Adult forms of Trypanosoma Lewisi

Description: The purpose of this study was to examine the ultrastructure of both young (dividing form) and adult (stationary form) of Trypanosoma lewisi. Changes observed between the two forms of the organism were related directly to data obtained from previous comparative biochemical studies conducted on these forms of Trypanosoma lewisi.
