The Development and Use of the Bass Clarinet in the Symphony Orchestra
The purpose of this study is to trace the development of a comparatively young orchestral instrument, the bass clarinet, and its use in the symphony orchestra. The first chapter concerns the development of the bass clarinet from the earliest imperfect specimen to the modern day instrument. The second chapter discusses physical characteristics that are peculiar to the bass clarinet. The third chapter deals with the particular methods of using the bass clarinet in orchestral literature by various composers, from its introduction into the orchestra by Meyerbeer through the present.
Isozymes of Human Triosephosphate Isomerase: Isolation and Characterization
The isolation and purification of triosephosphate isomerase from humanerythrocytes, cardiac and skeletal muscle, liver, and brain has been described. Subsequent isolation and characterization of three isozymes from three tissues was effected.

A Voltage-Controlled Incandescent Lamp Driver for Musical Performances of Multimedia Works
Performances of multimedia works are hampered by the difficulty of controlling large numbers of incandescent lamps rapidly and accurately. The instrument described in this document is aimed at alleviating this problem. Chapter I describes the design and operation of the voltage-controlled dimmer unit and the DC controller. Chapter II describes step-by-step procedures for building the instrument. Schematics, wiring diagrams, and illustrative photographs are included. Chapter III discusses some of the aesthetics and philosophy of multimedia composition, and then describes various scenarios which utilize the instrument. Included are the connection of peripheral control equipment, audio/Video interfacing, and the potential for constructing prepared tapes which will automatically drive the dimmers. The prototype was built at the NTSU Electronic Music Center.
A Group Interpretation Script, "Sinclair Lewis, a Biographical Portrait"
The purpose of this project was to prepare a group interpretation script based upon the life of Sinclair Lewis and to direct a production of the script. Major sources for the script are Mark Schorer, Sinclair Lewis: An American Life; Grace Hegger Lewis, With Love From Gracie; and Vincent Sheean, Dorothy and Red. The script employs five readers and has a performance time of approximately fifty-five minutes. The thesis includes a biography of Lewis, a justification for the project, the purpose and procedures followed, as well as discussions of the production concept, adapting material for group interpretation, direction, rehearsal procedures, and evaluations of the script and the performance. The complete script is also included in the thesis.

The Solo Piano Works of Alfredo Casella: A Comparative Analysis of His Diverse Styles
The compositions to be considered in this study have been divided into three periods, corresponding with certain times in the life of Alfredo Casella. There is enough consistency of style in the compositions of each period to justify this division. The first period, characterized by lyricism and virtuosity, includes the works written in Paris after Casella left the Paris Conservatory. The second period, with its chromaticism and dissonance, comprises his output during the first years after his return to Italy. The third period begins with the close of World War I. In this period Casella returns to a classic style which is firmly embedded in an extended tonal system. The compositions of this period combine various ideas and styles gathered through the years and blend them into works marked by maturity, sincerity, and originality.

The a Cappella Choral Music of Benjamin Britten
The twentieth century has witnessed a renaissance in the composition of choral music. Not since the Baroque, has choral writing held the prominent position with composers that it has today. At the same time, English composers have regained a stature and influence they have not held since the time of Purcell. It was not until the time of Edward Elgar, Gustave Holst, and Ralph Vaughn-Williams that English music began to recover from the decline of the nineteenth century. Benjamin Britten has played a large role in both the choral renaissance and the recovery of English music.

A Study of Superstitions and Customs Affecting Health Practices Among the People of Starr County, Texas
Because superstitions and customs of the people of Starr County, Texas, have a bearing on health practices that affect their well-being, the purpose of this study is to explain the deep-rooted superstitions and customs adhered to by the settlers. In order to understand more fully the cultural factors which relate to health, it is necessary to study the lives and customs of the people of Starr County. An effort has been made to look at their problems, not from a critical standpoint, but from the standpoint of helping the people and of viewing them sympathetically. A keen interest in the health practices of the people of Starr County, Texas, originated in tracing superstitions and customs in relation to the backward condition of these people. This thesis is a report of the writer's findings of those superstitions and customs as viewed by one who has lived in the county for six years.
Ultrastructural Effects of Chemical Modification on Olfactory Receptors
The ultrastructural effects of chemical modification on olfactory receptors were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and fluorescent microscopy. Mason and Morton (1984) hypothesized that a two-step chemical treatment would covalently modify receptor proteins. Their two-step protocol was modified in an attempt to label olfactory receptor proteins and the ultra structural effects of the original two-step protocol were examined.
An Investigation of the Acoustical Properties of the Trumpet Mouthpiece
The purpose of this study was to present a comprehensive analysis of the acoustical properties of the trumpet mouthpiece. The first section will be concerned with the individual parts of the mouthpiece and their interrelationship. The second portion of the study will be the physical analysis of three commonly used trumpet mouthpieces. For this study, five examples of each size have been selected. The third section will present a tonal analysis of the selected mouthpieces. These investigative procedures will attempt to recognize any relationships between the individual mouthpieces and the resulting tones.
Evidence for a Role of the Multifunctional Calcium/Calmodulin-Dependent Protein Kinase II in Insulin Secretion
Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaM kinase II) is demonstrated to exist in the ß-cell and immunopecipitation. Glucose and potassium significantly stimulate the rapid autophosphorylation of CaM kinase II and proportionally induce autonomous activity of the kinase in a dose-dependent manner that parallels insulin secretion. The activation of CaM kinase II, alloxan, KN-62 and KN-93, suggest that the enzyme is an integral component of insulin secretion and/or related processes in the β-cell.
Scales and their Use in the Piano Music of Debussy and Ravel
The purpose of this study is to acquaint the reader with certain scales, not merely as they are used to provide the theoretical "building stones" of all music, but as they have been used as actual scale passages in the piano music of two twentieth century composers. This is a study of the use of various scales in the piano music of Debussy and Ravel. A list of the piano music of these composers which was available for the present investigation is given in the Bibliography. A careful analysis of the music has been necessary in order to determine: First, the types of scales the composer uses; second, the interpretation of the scale in its context; third, the ways in which some scale passages are employed to help project musical thought in the composition; and fourth, the frequency of occurrence of types of scale passages.
Studies on the Structure and Function of Glucosephosphate Isomerases: Chemical Modifications, Chemical Cleavages and Structural Analyses
Human glucosephosphate isomerase was subjected to a series of chemical modifications aimed at identifying residues essential for catalytic activity. Specific lysyl, arginyl, tryptophanyl and histidyl residues were found to react stoichiometrically with pyridoxal-5'-phosphate-NaBH4, 2,3-butadione, N-bromosuccinimide and N-bromoacetylethanolamine phosphate, respectively.
Electromyographic Analysis of the Pectoralis Major During Six Selected Antigravity Calisthenics
The problem of this study was the analysis of the pectoralis major during six antigravity exercises using electromyographc techniques. Thirty male subjects were used for the investigation from physical education classes at North Texas State University during the spring of 1976.
Evaluation of Immobilized Boronates for Studies of Adenine Nucleotide Metabolism
Immobilized boronates were evaluated for studies of adenine nucleotide metabolism. These studies were performed using Affi-gel 601, a commercial boronate gel, and dihydroxyboryl Sepharose and dihydroxyboryl-Bio Rex which were synthesized in the laboratory. The studies performed included the determination of the relative binding affinity of a variety of adenine containing compounds for the three immobilized boronates under differing chromatographic conditions.
Natural Resources in Texas--an Undeveloped Source of Taxation
The specific aim of this study is to show the significance of the natural resources of Texas and their potential possibilities as an adequate source of income for the State. Linked in with this discussion and underlying it is the thesis that adequate taxation of the natural resources will not only provide sufficient income for the State's needs but also conserve and utilize these resources.
Physical Characterization and Restriction Mapping of the Sal Plasmid From Pseudomonas Putida
Physical and restriction mapping of the salicylate catabolic plasmid SAL from Pseudomonas putida strain PpG 2119 was carried out by standard multiple restriction analysis and by cross hybridization studies using radioactively labeled restriction fragment probes. The total numbers of fragments produced, their respective sizes, the arrangement of the restriction fragments on the plasmid and the map locations of the enzyme recognition sites for Hpal, Xhol, Dral and Smal are given.
Holomorphology and Drumming Behavior of Western Nearctic Isoperla (Plecoptera)
The holomorphology of ll life stages of 20 western Nearctic Isoperla and one Cascadoperla was studied over the 3-year period 1975-1978. One monotypicgenus new to science, Cascadoperla, is described, and Cascadoperla tricture (Hoppe) designated as the type species. The nymph, adult male and female, and ova are described and illustrated.
The Effectiveness of a Personal Robot in Presenting a Sound/Filmstrip as Measured by a Robotic Technology Achievement Test
The problem of this study was to compare the effects of two methods of filmstrip presentation on student achievement. One method employed a personal robot to automatically advance a filmstrip projector in sequence with an audio cassette tape while the other method had a person manually advancing a filmstrip projector in sequence with an audio cassette tape. These were the findings of the study: The pretested experimental and control subjects learned from the sound/filmstrip. The pretested experimental and control groups' mean posttest scores were significantly higher (p < .05) than their pretest mean scores. The experimental groups did not achieve significantly higher mean scores (p > .05) on a posttest, delayed retest, or module mean tests than the control groups. Using the findings of this study, the following conclusions were drawn. Students Learn from a sound/filmstrip on robotic technology whether it is presented by a human being or by a robot. A robot is a viable alternative to the human teacher in situations where the student-teacher interaction is limited.
Children's Ability to Recognize Visually Occluded Stimuli
The purpose of this research was to study children's ability to recognize partially occluded images. Tasks were constructed which consisted of occluded images from video games, trademarks, and household objects. The tasks were administered to third and sixth grade students at two elementary schools in Arlington, Texas. The researcher discovered no significant differences between the scores of males and females except for the males' higher score on the video game task .
How to Build a Log Cabin by the Post-and-Beam Method
The primary purpose of this study is to give simple and detailed instructions for building a log cabin by the post-and-beam method. The data were gathered from three sources: (1) library research, (2) interviews with experienced builders of cabins, and (3) personal experience in cabin construction. A step-by-step guide for building a cabin is given in Chapters II and III, which explain in depth how to construct each section of the cabin, from laying the foundation to putting on the finishing touches. It is believed that any serious builder can follow the directions and construct his own log cabin for less than one-third the cost of a similar commercially built cabin.
A Rapid, Accurate Thin Layer Chromatographic Analysis of Phospholipids and Neutral Lipids
A modified ascending thin layer chromatographic technique has been developed which resolves the major phospholipid and neutral lipid classes of five common fluids and tissues. A one-half milliliter sample is extracted with n-butanol:diisopropylether (40:60 by volume, cholesteryl acetate = 100 ng/ul) for thirty minutes and the organic phase is spotted onto a thin layer chromatography plate and carried through three successive chromatographic developments. The lipids are then visualized either by charring with ammonium bisulfate or staining with phosphomolybdic acid. The use of cholesteryl acetate as an internal standard enables quantitation of the phospholipids and neutral lipid classes. This method may be a very valuable, new technique for research and clinical laboratories.
Characterization of the Molecular and Ionic Properties of the Histidine-Rich Protein Isolated From Newborn Rat Epidermis
Histidine-rich protein from newborn rat epidermis has been further characterized. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in 8 M urea demonstrated dissociation of the protein, a possible oligomeric series, and one major band with two minor bands of the, pH 5.0 precipitate. Amino acid analysis correlated well with previous analyses (except for lower levels of histidine), while the amino acids of high content increased with purification. Sedimentation coefficients and molecular weights determined by ultracentribfugation of all monomers and the residual tissue in histidine-rich protein were in agreement with estimates from gel filtration chromatography. Lower values were obtained for keratohyalin granule proteins. Isoelectric focusing indicated diisoelectric properties of the protein. A molecular model of deamidation is presented in an attempt to explain this property.
The Effects of EDTA Chelation Therapy on Plaque Calcium and Mineral Metabolism in Atherosclerotic Rabbits
New Zealand albino rabbits exhibited calcified aortic plaques and maximum average serum cholesterol levels of 1200 mg percent after twenty-three weeks on an atherogenic diet (250 to 500 mg percent cholesterol in ten percent corn oil; 200,00 I.U. vitamin D3 per month). One month following termination of the atherogenic diet, rabbits were treated with disodium edetate (Na2EDTA, 50 mg/kg body weight) via the marginal ear vein, on alternating days for a total of twenty infusions each. Aortae were examined for tissue calcium both quantitatively (direct microcomplexometric analysis) and histologically six weeks after completion of EDTA chelation therapy.

The real importance of the twelve-tone system would seem to lie in its structural possibilities. It combines the inherent potentialities of the theme of a movement in sonata form with those of the theme of a fugue and of variations. It creates a coherent texture throughout the single movements and the work as a whole. It is needless to say that this kind of coherence can also be achieved in serial compositions, that is, in movements in which not the full row of twelve tones, but only seven or eight or nine tones form the basic row.

The Brahms Variations on a Theme of Paganini and the Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
Born April 2, 1873, on the estate of Oneg in the province of Novgorod, Russia, Sergei Vassilyvitch Rachmaninoff was the fifth of the six children of Vassili and Lyoubov Boutakova Rachmaninoff. Rachmaninoff's aristocratic descent was traced to the Hospodars Dragosh, rulers of the realm of Molday from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. One of the daughters from this family had married a son of the Grand Duke Ivan III of Moscow. The son's nephew was named Rachmanin, and from this source the family name originated.1 Rachmaninoff's mother was the daughter of a general, head of Araktcheyev Military College in Novgorod and the owner of a number of estates in the district. It was with a dowry of five of these estates that Lyoubov Boutakova married Vassili Rachmaninoff, and on one of these estates, Oneg, the couple settled down to married life.

Aspects of Fathead Minnow Reproductive Behavior
Following a study of normal reproductive behavior of fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas, experiments were conducted to determine the stability/variability of behavior by sexually mature, territorial males under a variety of manipulated conditions. Collectively, these experiments indicate that although the individual behaviors of fathead minnows appear to be quite variable, the overall process, reproductive behavior, is stable.
Zinc Metabolism of Young College Women on Self-Selected Diets
The function of zinc in the nutrition of man has been studied by numerous investigators in an attempt to determine the needs of the body for this element. To date no deficiency disease has been produced by a zinc-deficient diet and cured by the addition of this element to the diet. The only criteria thus far presented to establish its essentialness in the dietary of man are the facts that zinc is retained by the body and that its presence is necessary for normal functioning of other nutrients. This study was made to observe zinc metabolism of young college women on self-selected diets, to see if a requirement for zinc intake in humans could be established.

Studies of Pigment-Lipid-Protein Complexes Isolated from the Cell Membrane of Xanthomonas Juglandis (Campestris)
Separation of the pigment-lipid esters of Xanthomonas juglandis (campestris) in a silica gel G:celite 545 column yielded 4 bands. Two of these bands, ester #1 and #2, make up over 95% of the mixture. Analysis of the four pigments indicate that three are phospholipids and that the phosphate accounts for about 3-4% of the weight of each of the two major esters.
Life Cycle and Ecology of the Hydropsychidae (Trichoptera) of the Brazos River, Texas
Populations of all stages of three species of Hydropsychidae, Hydropsyche simulans, Cheumatopsyche campyla, and Cheumatopsyche lasia were sampled fro September, 1971, to August, 1972, on the Brazos River in Palo Pinto County, Texas. Supplemental observations relating to emergence, mating and oviposition, and larvae food habits were continued to July, 1973. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the life cycles and ecology of this Hydropsychidae complex.
Investigations on Abundance, Habits, and Distribution of Amphibians and Reptiles of Denton County, Texas
The purpose of the present study of the herpetofauna was to obtain additional information regarding the vertebrates of Denton County, and to produce a well-preserved, cataloged collection of the amphibians and reptiles for the Museum of Zoology, North Texas State University. An understanding of the vertebrate life of the county also involves an investigation of the habitats within the county that may, in part, count for the distribution of these animals. It is well recognized that the environmental areas of the county have altered vastly during the last one hundred years. This alteration is due largely to agriculture and industry. However, there are adequate numbers of natural environments, as well as newly created ones that may contribute to the distribution of the vertebrates at the present time. Therefore, the problem not only concerned the collection of specimens, but also the identification, abundance classification, general habitat classifications, and county distribution.
Interaction of Legionella Pneumophila and Selected Algae and Response to Disinfectants
Two species of cyanobacteria (Fischeralla sp. 29161 and Phormidium autumnale) and one species of green algae (Fritschiella tuberosa) were found to promote survival of Legionella pneumophila in mineral salts medium cocultures. During the early stage of incubation Fischerella sp. supported growth of Legionella pneumophila even though the bacteria would not grow in the algae-free basal medium.
The Effect of Music Activities on the Total Adjustment of a Third Grade Group
The purpose of this work is not to justify the teaching of music in the public schools; that has been done by the authorities to the extent that music in some form is in the curriculum of the majority of American public schools today. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of certain music activities on the total adjustment of a group of third grade children and to show possible advantages of the teaching of music as a part of the regular teacher's load.
The Materials and Methods Employed in the Pedagogy of Woodwind Instrument Classes at the College Level
It is the purpose of this thesis to present some of the material to be employed in the pedagogy of the woodwind instrument classes at the college level in order that this material may serve as a useful and beneficial guide for the students and teachers of the woodwind instrument classes. This study has been prepared in the belief that a most serious obstacle in the teaching of woodwind instrument classes is the lack of a comprehensive text dealing with the fundamentals underlying the selection of teaching materials to be used. In a large number of instances young teachers are confronted with the necessity of developing a woodwind department in their schools without having had any systematic preparation for the task. This thesis attempts to meet this need.

Visual Literacy in Computer Culture: Reading, Writing, and Drawing Logo Turtle Graphics
This study seeks to explore relationships between Logo turtle graphics and visual literacy by addressing two related questions: (a) can traditional visual literacy concepts, as found in the published literature, be synthesized in terms of Logo turtle graphics, and (b) do the literature and "hands-on" experience with turtle graphics indicate that visual competencies are pertinent to graphics-based electronic communications in computer culture? The findings of this research illustrate that Logo turtle graphics is a self-contained model to teach visual literacy skills pertinent to computer culture. This model is drawn from synthesizing published literature and the classroom experience of Logo learners, which is demonstrated through their visual solutions to Logo assignments. A visual analysis and interpretation of the subjects' work concludes that the principles and competencies associated with traditional visual literacy skills manifest during the Logo turtle graphics experience. The subjects of this study demonstrate that visual literacy pertinent to computer culture includes reading, writing, and drawing alphanumerics and pictographic information with linguistic equivalence. The logic for this symbolic metaphor is body-syntonic spatial experience explained in geometric terms. The Logo learner employs computational models for visual ideas and visual-verbal symbols for spatial ideas in the course of doing turtle graphics.
A Production Analysis of the Musical, Peter Pan
This investigation is concerned with the analysis of a production of Peter Pan, a large-scale musical play, which was presented at Dallas Repertory Theatre in February of 1975. This analysis is intended to be both an educative discussion of the experimental nature of the show and a practical guide to the production of a typical musical play by a non-professional company. The most outstanding elements examined include the following: (1) casting a teen-age boy, instead of an adult, in the title role; (2) casting children in all children's roles, and adults in all adult roles; (3) modification of the script and score to implement the casting of children in key roles; (4) the utilization of a short motion picture to simulate the flying of actors onstage.
Effects of an Electric Field on Water Uptake in Single Roots of Intact Onion Plants
Water uptake by a single root of an onion plant (Allium cepa) was measured potentially before, during and following exposure of shoots to an external electric field (EEF). The field strength used was 9kV/m DC and AC (60-Hz) brought about a statistically significant increase (44-71%) in water uptake if the shoot chamber was at almost 100% humidity.
