Naphthoquinone Studies

Description: This thesis describes a series of naphthoquinone reactions employing pyridine carboxylic acid derivatives (nicotinic acid derivatives). The products of these reactions will be tested by Parke, Davis and Company for their activity against the tubercle bacillus and other pathogenic microorganisms.

Nitration of Thiophene Analogs of DDT

Description: Since thiophene very often yields compounds that are analogous to benzene derivatives in general physiological properties, it was decided to attempt to prepare the nitro and amino derivatives of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis-(2-thienyl)-ethane (V) as well as the nitro and amino derivatives of 2,2,3-trichloro-1,1-bis-(2-thienyl)-butane (VI).

Nitrogen Derivatives of Naphthoquinone

Description: A series of nitrogen derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinone, which are structurally similar to the compounds of Hall, has been prepared by this worker. In general, the amido groups are those of the long-chain, fatty acids, and it is believed they will have increased physiological activity. These compounds are to be tested for medicinal activity by Parke-Davis and Company.

The Preparation of Pyridinium Derivatives by the Knoevenagel Condensation

Description: An attempt is made in the work described in this paper to extend the series started by Hall and Platas by means of a Knoevenagel condensation between 3-hydroxy-1,4-naphtho-quinone-2-(4-methylpyridinium) anhydride and various aromatic aldehydes giving rise to a series of unsaturated substituents on the four position of the pyridine ring.

Preparation of Pyridinium Derivatives of 2,3-Dichloro-5(8?)-Nitro-1,4-Naphthoquinone

Description: This paper describes the preparation of pyridine derivatives of 2,3-dichloro-5(8?)-nitro-1,4-naphthoquinone. A method for the nitration of 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone is also described. Certain 4-n-alkyl, 3,4-dialkyl, and 4-cycloalkyl pyridine derivatives are caused to undergo condensation reactions with the nitrated naphthoquinone, giving rise to a series of compounds of the preceding type (X). All of the compounds prepared will be tested for anti-tubercular activity by Parke-Davis and Com… more

Some Amine Derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinone

Description: It was the aim of this investigation to prepare derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinone substituted at the 2- and 3- positions with various amino groups. 2,3-Dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone was selected as the starting material because of the possibility of replacing the chloro groups in direct substitution reactions with amines.
