Allegro For Orchestra In C Minor: The composer has earnestly sought to capture in this work, Allegra for Orchestra in C minor, the clarity and simplicity that is commonly associated with works of the Classic Period of musical composition. He has tried to accomplish this by making use of musical composition. He has tried to accomplish this by making use of present day approaches toward musical composition, yet trying to delete the cleverness, the bizarre effects, and the trite pomposity that one finds so prevalent in much of the music that has been written since the beginning of the twentieth century. This effort toward simplicity extends to form, harmonic content, texture, and instrumentation.
An Analysis of American Choral Folk Music Currently Available in Domestic Publication: The traditional music of America in collection is musically representative of pioneer settlements of the country from Mexico to Canada and from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. To insure that each section of this vast country was musically represented naturally would require a systematic and thorough coverage by those persons who have made this work their primary concern for a good many years. A look at the map of these United States gives the observer an acute awareness of the stupendous undertaking for those who were first to begin their trek into the regions of the land where folk song abounds, into communities into which fast-moving civilization has been slow to penetrate. Early in their history these communities were isolated because of the hardships and dangers of travel. With the spread of civilization, however, the country was tamed and became more densely populated so that the growth of folk song and traditions within the social life of these isolated communities was a natural sequence.
An Analysis of the Activity Program Offered at El Centro, Denton's Youth Center: "The problem of this thesis is to determine through survey and comparative study the effect of the activity program of Denton's El Centro, the youth center, on the youth of the City of Denton...methods of operation and internal organization of youth centers, the purpose of the centers and the results of some of the activities are outlined. Members of the Denton youth center were interviewed; the information gained from the interviews was recorded on prepared questionnaires. Various types of activities at Denton's youth center are discussed. The study also attempts to reveal by means of tables those activities which are more important to the male youth of Denton. Application of Certain Seashore Measures of Musical Talent and the Kuder Preference Record to the Building of a Music Program in Borger High School: In this research, an attempt is made to evaluate the music program of a typical high school in terms of its contribution to the development of pupils who show evidence of possessing musical talent. One of the aims of modern education is to help pupils develop emotional stability, desirable attitudes, and worthy ideals. In other words, the purpose is to teach pupils to feel, as well as to know and do. Music can be powerful force in fulfilling this aim. The purpose of this report is to apply the results of the Pitch and Tonal Memory tests of the Seashore Measures of Musical Talent and the results of the Kuder Preference Record to the building of a Program Music in Borger High School.

A Critical Analysis of the Song Collection Schwanengesang by Franz Schubert: The following analysis of Franz Schubert's (1797-1828) song cycle Schwanengesang (1828) was undertaken in the hope that such a treatment of the final contributions of this important master of song literature would prove of interest to students of this field.The materials examined comprise the fourteen songs collectively known as Schwanengesang (Dying Strains), taken from the G. Schirmer's Edition of Schubert's Songs with English translations by Theodore Baker. From a synopsis of the art song concluded with critical remarks on Schubert's style and contributions to the art of writing songs, the author has proceeded to a few general statements on the song cycle itself. This is followed by an analysis of each song from the point of view of the text, the general harmonic scheme, the vocal line, and the function and type of accompaniment.
A Critical Evaluation of Eight Series of Music Books for Grades Four, Five and Six: This study is an evaluation of individual music textbooks from eight series for grades four, five, and six, by a definite criterion basis. It seems very worthwhile to have an evaluation of such books: (a) to aid in the wise selection of music books, and (b) to become familiar with the contributions of each series.
The Development of an Elementary Class Method of Band Instruction and Theory: The purpose of this study is to create a curriculum for beginning instrumentalists who have no background in music and are young students not yet capable of deciphering highly technical and academic sentences, phrases, and terms. This method is designed to give the student a foundation in theory without taking undue time from the instrumental phase of the curriculum and at the same time to increase the tempo of training in both phases.
Development of Vocational Rehabilitation in Texas: The purpose of this study has been to trace the development of the program of Vocational Rehabilitation for disabled individuals administered by the State Board for Vocational Education from 1929-1949. It has included a review of the historical background and shown the various rehabilitation services offered. This thesis is an attempt to make a careful study of the establishment, growth and development of vocational rehabilitation in Texas. It is recognized that there are many efforts directed toward vocational rehabilitation in Texas, but this study is to be confined to the development or the State-Federal Program administered by the Texas State Board for Vocational Education. It is further limited to the rehabilitation efforts of the Rehabilitation Division of the State Board for Vocational Education exclusive of the rehabilitation of the blind and the work of the Crippled Children's Division. the rehabilitation or the blind is excluded because it is generally accepted that the problems in connection with the rehabilitation of the blind are peculiar to the blind. The work of the Crippled Children's Division is excluded even though the services rendered by that Division were administered by the Rehabilitation Division until July 1, 1945 because theses have been written tracing the development or the work of that Division. These theses have been reviewed in preparing this study.
The Effect of Environmental Conditions Upon Study in the First Grade: The problem under consideration is to determine the effect of certain prevailing environmental conditions of a distracting nature upon the process of study in the first grade. The conditions selected, those which are common to the schoolroom or home environment, were chewing gum, physical education classes, room confusion, rhythm band, singing, and recorded music. This study attempted to determine to what degree, if any, each of these distracting environmental conditions affect the process of study in the first grade.
An Evaluation of In-Service Training in Sweetwater Schools, Sweetwater, Texas: The aim of this study was to evaluate the in-service training program in the Sweetwater Public Schools, Sweetwater, Texas from 1945 to 1949; and to show that an in-service training program is a necessity in progressive schools.
The Evolution of Viola Technique: Material relating to the viola, its history, technique, use as a solo and orchestral instrument, and its use in chamber music, is practically non-existent. For this reason, this document is being written in an attempt first, to collect and discuss, for the benefit of the author as well as for any who might have some interest in the viola, facts which might eliminate some of the common misunderstandings about the instrument, and second, to show, through examination of viola music, the use to which the viola has been put in solo, orchestral, and chamber music from the Baroque period to the present.

The History of Hardeman County, Texas: This thesis discusses the creation and history of Hardeman County in the state of Texas. The period of the Texas Republic was one of uncertain and unstable government, and the Red River Municipality thus created in 1835 remained as such for only two years. It was realized by the government that such large political subdivisions would not be easily administered, and by 1837 these municipalities were further divided into counties. The vast territory encompassed by the original boundaries of the Red River Municipality yielded thirty-five counties between 1837 and 1891, including Hardeman. The population of the newly created county was made up entirely of transient pioneers and roving bands of cowboys and cattlemen. The official census did not list a record of any population until 1880, when fifty people were shown as residents.

History, Organization, and Unit Costs of the North Texas State College Bookbindery: This study is a discussion and description of the history, organization, and unit costs of the North Texas State College bookbindery, together with a comparison of these unit costs with charges made by commercial bookbinders for similar services. These are the three outstanding purposes of this problem: 1. to record briefly a history of the North Texas State College Bookbindery, 2. to describe the organization of the N. T. S. C. Bookbindery, including the personnel policies and clerical routines now in effect in its operation, and 3. to determine the unit costs of various types of services rendered by the N. T. S. C. Bookbindery and compare these unit costs with price lists of commercial bookbinders for similar services. It is intended that this study may be used as a guide to those who may contemplate setting up small bookbinderies and as a reference tool to future managers of the N. T. S. C. Bookbindery.
The Legislative Origins of the Marshall Plan: With a deep conviction that this study will be useful to those who would better understand contemporary foreign policy, "The Legislative Origins of the Marshall Plan" is written with the following purposes: (1) to discover the origin and motives of the Marshall plan, (2) to discover the effect of the world-wide tours made by Congressmen in 1947 upon the legislative processes in the Marshall plan, (3) to compare and evaluate the respective contributions of the two houses of Congress to the Marshall plan, (4) to ascertain whether the Marshall plan is an economic, political, or humanitarian instrument, and (5) to evaluate the domestic effects, both governmental and economic, and to project them into the future.
The Materials and Methods Employed in the Pedagogy of Woodwind Instrument Classes at the College Level: It is the purpose of this thesis to present some of the material to be employed in the pedagogy of the woodwind instrument classes at the college level in order that this material may serve as a useful and beneficial guide for the students and teachers of the woodwind instrument classes. This study has been prepared in the belief that a most serious obstacle in the teaching of woodwind instrument classes is the lack of a comprehensive text dealing with the fundamentals underlying the selection of teaching materials to be used. In a large number of instances young teachers are confronted with the necessity of developing a woodwind department in their schools without having had any systematic preparation for the task. This thesis attempts to meet this need.

Personal Study and Comparative Analysis of the Track Men and the Football Men at North Texas State Teachers College for the Period of Ten Years (1930-1940): This study deals with an investigation of letterman in track in North Texas State Teachers College during the ten- year period of 1930-31 through 1939-40, as compared with football lettermen of the same period. More especially, it is a study of the program, the accomplishments, and the later occupations followed by the individual athletes who earned letters in track. The status of the athletes was considered from the standpoint of their athletic and scholastic attainments as well as their social activities while in college, The athletes were also considered from the standpoint of position and location since leaving college. It is recommended that in the near future a similar study be made of the other sports in North Texas State College to parallel this study.

A Practical Application of the International Phonetic Alphabet to the Teaching of Singing: The teaching of singing is fraught with psychological problems not met with in the other branches of applied music. The inordinate physical and mental concepts with which the singing teacher must deal result in the necessity that the singing teacher, to be highly efficient, must be a practicing psychologist. In the writer's experience, first as student and then as teacher and observer of the work of other teachers, it has become obvious that in the minds of the majority of pupils, diction problems are so paramount that they supercede the purely vocal aspects of singing. As the language sounds are rightly but a point of departure for the building of a beautiful and expressive singing tone, it seems absolutely essential that the way must be pointed whereby language in singing can find its proper place in the pupil's development, where it can assume the position of a help rather than a hindrance in vocal achievement.

There have been some studies made on this subject, but none of them has taken into consideration so many variables, to the writer's knowledge, as are recognized in this survey.
The Public Lands of Texas and Their Use for the Benefit of Education: When a new government is established, sovereign and national in its character, all of the land within its jurisdiction belongs to the people, not as individuals, but as a whole, except that which may have been theretofore acquired by individuals under such rights as may be respected by the new government. The land which has not been acquired by individuals is known as the public domain, and is subject to such disposition as the new government might determine. This thesis will review the public lands of Texas and how those lands have been used with a strong focus on the endowment of these lands to the public education system.

The primary purpose of this investigation is to make an analysis of the visual testing program in the common school districts of Denton County, list the results or outcomes, and make recommendations for future action. A secondary purpose is a review of literature to emphasize the responsibility of the school to discover visual deficiencies, to stress the part that good vision plays in the learning process, and to describe some satisfactory visual teaching devices.

This study of five Denton County clays has proved informative in several respects. It has shown that within the vicinity of Denton there are clays that are suitable for high-school use. Although all these clays may be suitable for one technique of pottery making each may not be suitable for all techniques. Many clays may be used after refining by a simple, quick process without the use of expensive and complicated equipment. Simple glazes, which have an aesthetic as well as a utilitarian value, may be compounded to fit these clays.

Teaching Syllabus for the Junior High School General Music Class: To further the effectiveness of music in the schools, to create a more meaningful and enjoyable musical experience in the junior high school -- these are the ideals that prompted the writing of this thesis. The need for this work is set forth in three subordinate needs. First, there is need for uniformity in aspects of music to be taught at the junior high school level. Women in the Theater of Juan Ruiz de Alarcon: Until the time of Lope de Vega and the Golden Age of Spanish literature, women had always had secondary roles in the Spanish drama. There were two reasons for this: 1) Women were not fully appreciated in the society of the times. 2) Women were prohibited from appearing on the stage for many years, and boys usually took their parts. An Evaluation of the Factors Involved in Program Building for the High School Chorus: It is the purpose of this study to set forth facts, substantiated by investigation of authoritative sources, proving that all selections used on the concert program of a high school chorus should serve a permanently constructive purpose toward the musical growth of the students. The first part of the thesis concerns those elements which have to be taken into consideration in teaeching any high school music group These are: 1. The psychological make-up of the group in regard to age and physical development. 2. The psychological make-up of its audience. 3. The existing level of musical skill of the group as a whole. 4. The existing degree of aesthetic appreciation of the chorus and its audience. The latter part of the work specifies the aims in vocal instruction of the high school choral course. These include sight reading, breathing, tone, pitch, diction, phrasing, and interpretation. It also attempts to demonstrate how the preparation of a concert program serves to accomplish these aims. This involves a critical evaluation of each number on a proposed program in reference to the following points: 1. Psychological reception by the group and its audience. 2. Its contribution toward improved aesthetic discrimination on the part of singers and listeners. 3. The opportunity afforded for specific vocal and musical training.
Popular Choices in Modern Printed Textiles on the Dallas Market: In order to develop a program whereby people can be educated to appreciate and choose the best contemporary designs among the many textiles that are available, it is necessary to know which types of textiles, if any, among those designed in the modern manner, the public accepts, which it rejects, and the factors that influence selection. This study was made to discover those factors -- such as color, subject matter, and utility -- that determine popular choices in a representative group of well-designed modern printed textiles which were available on the Dallas market. The textiles were placed on public exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts.
