Comments On "Electromagnetic Radiation And The Afterlife" [#1]

Description: This paper by Evan Harris Walker comments on Janusz Slawinski's paper named "Electromagnetic Radiation and the Afterlife." It states the shortcomings of Slawinski's electromagnetic radiation argument by specifying a variety of points that run counter to the argument's physical possibility.

Comments on Stuart Twemlow's "Misidentified Flying Objects? An Integrated Psychodynamic Perspective on Dear-Death Experiences and UFO Abductions"

Description: Abstract: In addition to the hypotheses on UFO abductions and near-death experiences described by Stuart Twemlow, another one has been put forward by researchers over the years that increases the complexity of the question of the reality of these experiences. Furthermore, there is some claimed physical evidence for abductions, while there is none for near-death experiences (NDEs). The exploration of unusual personal changes at the time of an abduction or NDE certainly warrants further attenti… more

Comments on "The Ketamine Model of the Near-Death Experience: A Central Role for the N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor"

Description: Abstract: Although ketamine can induce a state similar to a near-death experience (NDE), there is a striking difference between experiences induced by ketamine used in a recreational context and in an operating room. Ketamine is a noncompetitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, as is ibogaine, the main alkaloid of a shrub used in Central Africa to induce NDEs in a religious context. Ibogaine can also elicit different experiences when used in a hallucinatory context or in initi… more

Comments on Twemlow's Article

Description: Abstract: Stuart Twemlow's argument for a psychodynamic approach to anomalous experiences contains some weaknesses. First, Twemlow argues for a primarily mental model of UFO abductions without addressing the presence of physical evidence in some UFO sightings. This omission may reflect the practical limitations of the therapist's role, which usually does not include fieldwork to collect and analyze corroborative physical evidence. Second, it may be difficult for some experiencers to understa… more

Community Attitudes Toward Near-Death Experiences: A Chinese Study

Description: Abstract: In a survey of Chinese attitudes toward near-death experiences (NDEs), 197 respondents were read a hypothetical description of an NDE and asked to choose from a range of explanations and social reactions that might approximate their own. Fifty-eight percent of respondents believed that NDEs were probably hallucinations or dreams. Less than nine percent believed the NDE was evidence of life after death. Rural and younger persons were more likely to react positively to NDErs. The re… more

Community Attitudes Toward Near-Death Experiences: An Australian Study

Description: Abstract: In an Australian survey of community attitudes toward near-death experiences (NDEs), 173 respondents were asked to read a hypothetical description of an NDE and to select from a range of explanations that might approximate their own. Fifty-seven percent of the respondents believed the NDE was evidence of life after death, while less than 2 percent believed the NDE was a sign of mental illness. Women, younger persons, and those who professed a belief in life after death were more lik… more

A Comparative Analysis of Japanese and Western NDEs

Description: Abstract: Decades of studies on near-death experiences (NDEs) have reveals both cross-cultural and culture-specific features (Kellehear, 2009) and that it is important to determine which aspects are attributed to the physiological, biological, or psychological mechanisms shared by all humans and which aspects are of cultural origin. In this article, we examine Japanese NDEs and compare their features with generalizations based on observations of Western NDEs. The main differences between Japa… more

A Comparative Study of Near-Death Experience and Non-Near-Death Experience Outcomes in 56 Survivors of Clinical Death

Description: Article discussing the results of a study involving persons who experienced clinical death including both survivors who had near-death experiences (NDEs) and those who did not. Participants filled out questionnaires designed to identify changes in behavior following NDEs to compare the results between the two groups.

Comparing Near-Death Experiences and Shared Death Experiences: An Illuminating Contrast

Description: Article comparing records of persons who reported near-death experiences (i.e., experienced by a person close to death) with shared death experiences (i.e., experienced by someone other than the person close to death). It discusses similarities and differences in features and aftereffects based on these reports.

A Comparison of Near-Death Experiences Occurring Before and After 1975: Results From an Internet Survey

Description: Abstract: The 1975 publication of Life After Life (Moody, 1975) led to wide public recognition of near death experiences (NDEs). Much of the early NDE research, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, studied NDEs occurring predominantly before 1975. If the content and aftereffects of NDEs remained constant before and after 1975, this early NDE research may be considered applicable to NDEs occurring more recently. This study used the methodology of an Internet-based questionnaire survey that has … more

A Comparison of UFO and Near-Death Experiences as Vehicles for the Evolution of Human Consciousness

Description: Abstract: This study compares unidentified flying object experiencers (UFOErs) with near-death experiencers (NDErs) in regard to changes in attitudes toward self, others, and life in general, toward religious or spiritual orientation, and toward psychic abilities and beliefs. Kenneth Ring's questionnaires administered to NDErs (1984) were given in this study to 93 persons whose UFOE included either a light experience, and object experience, or a "close encounter." The author concludes that t… more

Complex Visual Imagery and Cognition During Near-Death Experiences

Description: Abstract: Near-death experiences (NDEs) entail complex and structured conscious experience during conditions known to coincide with rapid loss of consciousness often associated with decline or disruption of the neurological correlates currently held to be causative factors of visual imagery and cognition. In this study, 653 NDE reports of cardiac and/or respiratory arrest patients were analyzed for unprompted, spontaneous references to quality of conscious visual imagery and mentation during a… more
