Summary Report of the Needs Assessment
Date: June 18, 2006
Creator: Murray, Kathleen R. & Hsieh, Inga K.
Description: This report is part of the Web-at-Risk project. The Web-at-Risk project is one of eight digital preservation projects funded in 2004 by the Library of Congress. This 3-year collaborative effort of the California Digital Library, the University of North Texas (UNT), and New York University is developing a Web Archiving Service that will enable the project's curators to build, store, and manage collections of web-published materials in repositories located at the three project partner sites. The content will be collected largely from US federal and state government agency web sites, but will also include web-published political policy documents, campaign literature, and information concerning political movements and labor unions. This report summarizes the findings from these assessment activities. A brief description of data collection and analysis activities is provided in Appendix A. Individual reports for each assessment activity are also available. The web locations for these are listed in Appendix B.

Web Collection Plan Overview: Considerations for Project Curators
Date: August 24, 2006
Creator: Murray, Kathleen R. & Hsieh, Inga K.
Description: This report is part of the Web-at-Risk project. The guidelines in this document are intended to assist the Web-at-Risk's project's curators in developing plans for the collections they will create using the project's Web Archiving Service (WAS). A web collection typically consists of a group of web-sites related by a common subject, theme, or event. Librarians will notice that some familiar concepts and practices from collection planning for print materials easily transfer to collection planning for web-published materials while some new concepts and unfamiliar practices are introduced. To effectively manage collections of web-published materials, it is good practice to either create new plans or modify existing collection plans to address these concepts and practices.

Collaborations, Best Practices, and Collection Development for Born-Digital and Digitized Materials
Date: 2007
Creator: Murray, Kathleen R. & Phillips, Mark Edward
Description: This paper discusses collaborations, best practices, and collection development for born-digital and digitized materials. Abstract: The University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries is a collaborative partner in the Web-at-Risk project, one of eight preservation projects funded by the Library of Congress under the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP). Early in the project, UNT conducted a needs assessment to identify web archiving issues facing curators and librarians. Key findings in three areas are reported: current challenges, organizational issues, and collection development concerns. These findings informed the development of guidelines and a template for the project's curators to create web collection plans. In addition to the Web-at-Risk project, the Digital Projects Unit at the UNT Libraries has several digital library initiatives with government agencies at the Federal and State levels to preserve and provide access to important collections of born-digital and digitized materials. The library also houses The Portal to Texas History, a digital gateway to the rich collections held in Texas libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and private collections. Collaborations, best practices, collection development, and key lessons learned from these initiatives are identified. The DPU is also involved in trialing emerging tools and solutions for the libraries' storage ...

Curators' Evaluation of WAS Release 2/3
Date: March 16, 2007
Creator: Murray, Kathleen R.
Description: This report discusses the curators' evaluation of WAS release 2/3, part of the Web-at-Risk project. The Web Archiving Service, WAS Release 2/3, was available to the project's curators from January 30, 2007 - February 13, 2007. During this time 19 curators trialed the service with varying frequencies, as measured by the number of capture jobs they submitted. Subsequent to their trials, 17 curators submitted a web-based survey evaluation of their experience. The survey consisted of 27 questions, divided into four sections: Site Definition, Capture, and Management; Reports and Analysis; Search and Display; and Overall Release. This report summarizes the feedback received from the curators and provides details to illustrate the areas that were either confusing or problematic to them. Their recommendations as well as some considerations for future development are also included.

Prioritization of WAS Enhancement Ideas
Date: December 21, 2007
Creator: Murray, Kathleen R.
Description: This report is part of the Web-at-Risk project. Several enhancement ideas for future releases of the Web Archiving Service (WAS) have been identified. In order to refine and prioritize these ideas as well as elicit new enhancement ideas, 16 project curators participated in an online exercise between November 27 and December 16, 2007. The exercise employed a Delphi technique that consisted of a series of three online questionnaires, each available for a five or six day period. This report describes the exercise and reports the results.
