Getting ETDs off the Calf-Path: Digital Preservation Readiness for Growing ETD Collections and Distributed Preservation Networks [Presentation]

Description: This presentation addresses "Calf-Path" problems for Electronic Theses and Dissertation (ETD) repositories, problems associated with the early ad hoc and idiosyncratic workflow patterns. This presentation also documents relatively simple principles and guidelines for such ETD programs that can greatly improve the subsequent likelihood of implementing successful distributed digital preservation programs.

Appendix B: MetaArchive-SRB Transfer

Description: This is an appendix to the MetaArchive Final Report. This appendix document is a report on the status of a two-phase transfer test being carried out between the MetaArchive Cooperative and Chronopolis. These tests aim to demonstrate a proof-of-concept that the MetaArchive network may use Chronopolis's data grid preservation service as an exit strategy in the event that either MetaArchive or LOCKSS becomes unsustainable in the future.

Appendix D: LOCKSSBAGGER Tool

Description: This is an appendix to the MetaArchive Final Report. This appendix document describes tools. These tools are designed to facilitate the transfer of data contained within a number of LOCKSS archival units and packaged into bags. The bags are then transferred to the iRODS grid. The user has the option of creating and sending filled bags, or holey bags. The primary tools are written in Python, and make use of the iRODS command line utilities for data transfer.

This appendix document describes an automation process that involved the sending of a Folger Shakespeare Library collection (246 archival units measuring 1.3TB) hosted on a University of North Texas (UNT) LOCKSS cache to a storage resource hosted by Chronopolis at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC).
